California drivers will eventually have fewer choices when shopping for replacement tires under new regulations approved by the California Energy Commission. The rules are designed to reduce “rolling resistance,” or the amount of energy needed to keep a tire moving. Lower rolling resistance can improve gas mileage in gasoline-powered vehicles and increase efficiency in electric vehicles. The regulations will be phased in beginning in 2029, with stricter standards taking effect in 2033. Certain specialty tires, including some winter, off-road and performance tires, are exempt.
State officials say more efficient tires will save drivers money on gasoline and electricity over the life of the tires. The California Energy Commission estimates the standards could save drivers nearly $1 billion overall while reducing carbon emissions. The tire industry has raised concerns about the regulations, particularly the potential for higher prices and fewer choices. Some manufacturers have warned that a large percentage of replacement tires currently sold in California may not meet the stricter 2033 requirements. The new requirements apply to replacement tires sold for passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks.
Government trying to solve a problem that doesn’t exist. If I want to save money over the life of my tires, I will figure it out and buy the appropriate tires. I have a car that I only replace the tires, as I don’t drive it much, when they get to their expiration date. The clowns that legislate this stuff have no idea of all the situations. Who knows, maybe ‘rolling resistance’ is a made up marketing thing by the tire companies. What’s next giving tickets to people with improperly inflated tires? You know if they aren’t inflated properly, they will have more rolling resistance. Hey it the roads were in perfect shape everywhere the rolling resistance will be so much less for everyone which would save us all money. Go there!
There’s some truth to what they said about rolling resistance. Top
name tires, like BF Goodrich, Michelin, Continental, and Goodyear,
make excellent tires. They use quality first-rate rubber compounds
that grip and mold to the road better in extreme heat and cold, and
provide a shorter stopping distance They handle better in sharp turns,
and in the rain provide a better road contact by channeling the water
away which will help prevent hydroplaning. Premium tires are softer and
provide a quieter, smoother and more comfortable ride. They will help
improve gas mileage, however the savings is so negligible that it’s hardly
noticeable.
Dawg,
.
Maybe we ought to go to the squarish Shark Wheel, as they provide a smoother ride and less friction.

Well at least we know ‘rolling resistance’ doesn’t refer to smooth highways…because we sure don’t have many of those!
I think you’ve only seen the beginning of people the democrat representatives over reaching… especially now that socialism-communism is infiltrating the democrat party.Just wait
“especially now that socialism-communism is infiltrating the democrat party”
Ever hear of FDR? He was a democratic socialist. Completely left wing. It’s important to understand just how far to the right both the republican, and democrat parties have moved since Reagan.🤷♂️
When California tires become expensive a thriving tire black market will
develop. State legislature democrats saw nothing but dollar signs when
they legalized POT. Tax revenue has never come close to what they
predicted. Only ones cashing in were relations to some politicians.
Illegal POT growing became a huge money maker, tens of millions,
just in Co Co county.
.
Politicians and their unelected minion, have quite a track record.
Greasy Gavon the self serving actor who attempts to portray a worthwhile and real politician will probably create a free tires for the poor program, like he did with diapers, to get more votes.
The California Energy Commission can go pound sand and when they are done can go take a long walk off of a short pier with a pair of concrete slippers.
First our local state leaders tried to tell us we had to buy electric cars by 2035 and since that is failing, now they want to tell us what tires we can and cannot put on our vehicles? When will people (the voters!) get a clue and realize that this is going to bankrupt us and them! We need to change the leadership so that the asinine dictates by our wannabe be king can be nullified!
As for tires, maybe I should buy a small building in Nevada or Arizona and use it just as an address to register my cars. How is our local law enforcement going to prove that the cars stay in CA longer than 30 consecutive days or whatever the stupid rule is! California is going to lose MORE money because people are going to register vehicles in another state. Then the current leadership (and Becerra changes NOTHING!) are going to jack up registration and mileage taxes higher to compensate for those that leave or cheat the system.
For those that say, there are some exceptions and this and that … sorry, but if I want to MODIFY a vehicle, then I should be able to! I pay the fees, the taxes, the everything! I like the sound of a cammed V8, the throat of a 5.0 pulling on the freeway, and even the rasp of an Integra. I would. It drives me a low rider, but they can be beautifully done up. If you don’t, fine that is your choice!
This wanna be leaders are a joke.
California is already coming after cars registered in other states. Because it is so much less to buy/register cars in Montana, people with very expensive cars (such as Ferraris) buy/license them there. However, California is on to this and catching them. I doubt, however, that their financial incentive to come after violators of this regulation justifies their time.
Skinner’s mad as a hatter.
She doesn’t care about accomplishing anything, she just enjoys creating inconvenience for others.
Want to improve gas mileage and reduce emissions?
Try paving the roads.
I think this is great some tires are so cheaply made god knows whats in there
Lets not forget the fact that 50% of people are running bald tires and are a bigger hazard then the regulated tires
So how is that going to solve the bald tire problem? You think making tires more expense (like summer blended gasoline) is going encourage people to replace their bald tires?
That is about as counter-intuitive as taxing healthcare or taxing people who don’t have healthcare.
My prediction is, Reno is going to get a lot more business – just like it does for bullets and gas powered tools.
👍
Skinner isn’t interested in the bald tire problem. She’s from Berkeley, heck her car likely has bald tires.
I guess the tire shops in Reno are going to see some additional customers.
The feckless insane California democrat politicians will probably start up tire checks for each vehicle when getting a smog check.
Absolutely ridiculous and actually creates more problems and will cost us and the environment more.. check our Sherwood Cook’s royalty Auto Service videos… he’s quite knowledgeable
A New Government Tire Rule Could Cost Drivers More…
I watch him also. I love when he gifts cars to people. For those saying – Reno is where people will go for their tires………They already got that covered, If your plates don’t give you away they’ll be asking you for ID. This was the case a few years ago when you couldn’t get 79cc Predator gas engines at Harbor Freight. It’s weird…..because the 212cc was always available in California and there’s no way a engine 3x the size runs cleaner.
Once again, a bunch of UNELECTED bureaucrats telling American citizens what they can and cannot purchase for their very own vehicles. WC—Creeker called them clowns…..he was being way too kind.
How about fixing the damn pot holes that will help with rolling resistance and tire life.
controlling our lives one tire at a time.
Buzz off!
Oh that is choice coming from the gun control advocate.
Here is a report from Sacramento’s KCRA news on this regulation. There is an interview with a member of California Energy Commission who certainly seems to be an ideologue rather than one who evaluates the practicality of such a law.

Its all lies with these people. Trying to help save us money?? Lol yeah right these new tires will probably be horrible.
Gavin Newsom and his democrat cronies are making it harder and harder to live in the state! Next year appliances have to be electric not natural gas. We’re talking your home furnace, water heater, stove. Doubling the cost!. Now tires? What’s next???? The state is only going to be full of billionaires and homeless future. Im sure Newsom will be emperor!
When it comes to water heaters this new BS only applies to the Bay Area. You can still drive out to San Joaquin County (1.5 hours or so each way) and buy a gas water heater. Mine is hitting that 15 yr point, so I may just grab one locally soon as I have the space to store it until mine goes out. I’m sure a new one would be more efficient as well. I haven’t paid any attention to how this applies to new home builds.
This is what you get when the uninformed elect radical lib enviro-whackos in what is a one party state. It may save a little energy, but at a cost of human injury and death. Low rolling resistance tires have less traction than higher performance tires with a bit more rolling resistance. This results in longer braking distances and poorer handling, such as in emergency avoidance maneuvers.
Beam me up, there is a lack of intelligence in Sacramento!
They call Trump a king, Newscum and his pets tell you what tires you can buy, what bags you can use. what type of water heater and house heater you can have what car you can drive. Yet no one calls him a king.
We dont call him a King becuase that would be too kind.
We call him a dictator, a piece of scum, a piece of human waste and many other kind words. Though it will likely not happen, I would love to call him a prisoner.
Yes, he puts the d*** in dictator.
Perfect for Cuba.
Ok loser
Could end up with similar problem as their massive BRAIN FART legalizing POT.
Did not understand economics then or now. Will they create a tire black market ?
.
If you want a better quality than cheap garbage factory tires, then what ?
Will they have CHP pulling over trucks checking the load for non regulation tires ?
.
How much will tire prices increase as tire sellers are buried under a ton of forms
and red tape. Which agency will be responsible for becoming “THE TIRE POLICE” ?
Going around, “inspecting” tire sellers ?
.
Prediction, this is going to turn into another state legislature democrat politician
and unelected paperclip warrior . . . . . . . pass the popcorn fiasco moment.
.
Good thing the clowns work for the state, if they had to get a real world job they
might starve.
Want to put a STOP, to this repetitious insanity ? ? ? ?
.
STOP voting for democrats.
They will continue doing stupid stuff, until they are voted out of office ! ! !
Another reason to visit Nevada, first ammo then gas powered lawn equipment, now it tires!!!!
CA is the absolute laughing stock of the USA!!!
Adapt and overcome!!!
Steve Hilton is hosting a press conference today (Aug 20) at the:

So the tires from the companies that gave the most money to the politicians will be the brand that we will have to buy. I guess the politicians wanted more money in their pockets. Reno day trip for new tires for me.
So trucks get a pass, as usual. I think most people will keep their winter tires year ’round.
Aren’t they supposed to brainwash us and teach us to give the heil salute and click our boots together before they do stuff like this? The more they give us stupid laws like this to break the more legitimate laws people will break because they’re so used to breaking the stupid laws.
The dem clown show continues!
Infrastructure crumbling, education system dismal, crime rampant, taxes crushing the middle class….. and what do the democrats concentrate on? Tires.
The insanity of the state government and their supporters is monstrous.
