U.S. Rep. Josh Harder has introduced legislation aimed at increasing penalties for mail theft and improving federal efforts to investigate the crime. The Mail Theft and Postal Key Crime Prevention Act would direct the U.S. Sentencing Commission to strengthen penalties for mail theft, postal key crimes and related fraud. It would also establish a Mail Theft Coordinator in each federal judicial district to help coordinate investigations among local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. The legislation would also require annual reporting on mail theft trends and law enforcement efforts. According to federal data, nearly one million mail theft complaints have been reported nationwide since 2023. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service’s San Francisco Division, which includes Stockton and other Northern California communities, recorded one of the highest rates of mail theft complaints in the country over the past three years. Harder’s office said it has also received reports involving stolen packages and checks, damaged or burglarized cluster mailboxes and identity fraud linked to stolen mail. Harder has previously pushed for increased federal attention to mail theft in the Stockton area, including expansion of the Postal Inspection Service’s Project Safe Delivery initiative and the creation of a multi-agency task force focused on mail theft.

I’ve had mail stolen out of envelopes and packages at the Oakland facility. I know people who work at the Oakland facility who’ve told me for years about the employee theft problem. I also know that postal supervisors at the Oakland facility are aware of the theft issues and they don’t care. I’ve complained to the supervisors myself.

I can also tell you that the Contra Costa County Sheriff-Coroner Department has a firearm theft problem. For some reason when the Sheriff’s Department executes search warrants, then firearms have a tendency to go missing from those locations, and the Sheriff’s Department never seems to have any record of those firearms having been taken into evidence. They just vanish!!!

The theft and other crimes committed by government employees needs to be dealt with first.
Glad to see at least one California politician thinks criminals deserve a penalty.
I’ve recently posted on USPS trangressions lately – both included issues with lost packages (and rude and lying employees) – theough their own USPS tracking, the packages left Claycord country – went to the Oakland Center – and did not get to their next desination. They need to just close that distribution center and very carefully critique each employee (by a 3rd party) before allowing them employment.
