Contra Costa County Public Works has completed a safety study of Vasco Road between Marsh Creek Road/Highway 4 and the Alameda County line, identifying potential improvements aimed at addressing traffic, roadway and safety concerns along the busy corridor. The Vasco Road Corridor Safety Improvement Study outlines priority projects and recommendations that could be pursued as funding becomes available. The county gathered feedback from drivers and community members through an online survey and three public workshops held with District 3 Supervisor Diane Burgis. The final report is now available for public review. Comments can be submitted to Carl.Roner@pw.cccounty.us through Sept. 15, 2026. Meanwhile, a separate Vasco Road improvement project is moving closer to construction. The State Route 4 Bypass Authority has completed the design for the Vasco Road Safety Improvements Phase 2 Project, which includes approximately one mile of concrete median barrier, nearly 7,000 feet of roadway widening and the widening of a 113-foot bridge. The project also includes drainage and erosion-control improvements, retaining walls and wildlife crossings, fencing and other measures designed to protect species including the San Joaquin kit fox and California tiger salamander. The project was advertised for bids earlier this month, with bids expected to be opened in September and a contract awarded in October. Construction is currently expected to begin in February 2027.

Once the improvements are complete, will we be up to date or will it be like highway 4 and already outdated ?
Ya, but think about how many Kit Foxes and Tiger Salamanders were saved!!
It is nice to hear this. But we will see if it actually works. I don’t see how this solves the actual root cause of Vasco traffic. Maybe they will put in more lanes and eliminate the merge.
That being said, The BEST and cheapest fix is to eliminate Semi trucks and other slow moving vehicles from using Vasco. Commuting this every Morning and Afternoon, it is these SLOW moving vehicles that bog it all down.
Make them go the long way around and problem would be 80% solved.

So, you want to divert semi-truck traffic for others to deal with just so you don’t have to deal with it. No thanks!!! The rest of us have also had it with out of control freeway, highway, and cut-through surface street traffic. We don’t want what you want to push on us!!!
I try to avoid that stretch of road! Way to Many SPEEDERS ! My father-in-law spent 7 weeks in John Muir Hospital’s Intensive-care unit 10 years ago after an Intersection crash!!
How about opening up Port Chicago that goes to Shore Acres. That’s been closed for years. That would help with traffic big time.

Unfortunately, the U.S. Army has no desire to reopen Port Chicago Highway, but it really needs to be reopened, along with Solano Way and Waterfront Road.
