The East Bay Municipal Utility District lost an appeal last week in a nearly $8 million employment retaliation lawsuit filed by two former attorneys. A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit upheld a 2023 jury verdict finding that EBMUD and former chief counsel Craig Spencer retaliated against attorneys Saji Pierce and Ayriel Bland after they raised concerns about alleged workplace discrimination. The jury also found that Bland was treated so poorly that she was effectively forced to resign. Jurors deadlocked on Bland’s racial discrimination claims and rejected a disability discrimination claim by Pierce. Pierce, who worked for EBMUD for nearly 18 years, was awarded more than $3.7 million, while Bland was awarded nearly $4.3 million. The EBMUD board voted Friday to approve the payments, along with nearly $1.2 million in accrued interest. EBMUD said it was disappointed with the outcome but respects the judicial process and remains committed to creating an inclusive workplace.

This is what happens when government entities allow tyrants to rule like it’s their own little personal kingdoms, because they either don’t know or have forgotten that they’re public servants who are supposed to serve the public. The number of videos that exist of tyrannical public servants who believe that they rule over the public is truly astounding. How many billions have the people been forced to payout in settlements and judgments because public servants don’t know their place?
