Residents across Contra Costa County may once again notice smoky skies and haze Wednesday evening as wildfire smoke continues to move into the Bay Area from fires burning in Monterey County. The primary source appears to be the Timber Fire burning in the Big Sur area. The fire has grown to more than 17,000 acres and remains only partially contained as crews continue battling the blaze in steep and difficult terrain. Smoke from the Timber Fire has been drifting north and has previously reached portions of the East Bay. Adding to the smoke in the region, a new wildfire called the Plaskett Fire broke out Wednesday in southern Monterey County, about 40 miles south of the Timber Fire. The Bay Area Air District says wildfire smoke can move into the region from distant fires, and conditions can change quickly depending on wind direction. No Spare the Air Alert is currently in effect.
