A preliminary health assessment released this week by the Bay Area Air District found that people living near Chevron’s Richmond refinery could face an elevated risk of cancer and other health problems from refinery emissions. The assessment estimates a maximum cancer risk of 37 additional cases per million people over a lifetime of exposure, above the Air District’s threshold of 10 per million. Short-term risks for non-cancer health effects were also estimated to exceed district limits. According to the report, much of the estimated cancer risk is associated with benzo[a]pyrene from leaks at refinery equipment, while short-term risks are largely associated with benzene emissions from the refinery’s wastewater treatment system.
The findings are preliminary and are now open for public comment. If the elevated risks are confirmed, Chevron could be required to develop a plan to reduce emissions or install additional pollution controls. Chevron disputes portions of the assessment, saying some assumptions may overstate actual emissions and include equipment that is no longer operating. The Air District will hold a community meeting Sept. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Richmond Memorial Auditorium & Convention Center. Public comments will be accepted through Nov. 23.

That refinery has been there for darn near 100 years. If it was such a danger to the people of Richmond why have generations stayed?
I would like to know how the measurements around Chevron compare to other refineries around the country.

Wait for it, there’ll somehow be massive fines, pursuers of emergency
transport vehicles will see $$$ signs. An CA will have to buy more
finished fuels refined from russian crude oil, but the end product
pedigree only extends back to country that refined the crude.
So CA is “second hand” supporting war against the Ukraine.

to run a piece about fuel refined from Russian crude being sold in CA,
nor will newsom be questioned at one of his fly-by TV OPs.

I remember several decades ago there was a discharge of some kind from the Chevron Refinery in Richmond. KPIX-CBS 5 was at the local hospital to ask residents what symptoms they were having from the discharge, they stopped a young man and asked, his response was, “My back hurts!!!”
