California lawmakers have approved legislation aimed at strengthening the state’s primary funding program for walking and biking infrastructure, sending the measure to Gov. Gavin Newsom for his signature, a press release issued by California Bicycle Coalition said.
AB 2168, authored by Assemblymember Buffy Wicks and sponsored by CalBike, would update the state’s Active Transportation Program, which funds projects designed to improve walking and bicycling.
The bill would expand the program’s focus on connections between walking, biking, and public transit. It also would encourage larger, connected projects by coordinating ATP projects with State Transportation Improvement Program funding.
The legislation would impose progressively stronger penalties on agencies that repeatedly fail to spend awarded ATP funds in a timely manner.
The measure has received support from transportation, environmental, safety and community organizations, as well as the California Big City Mayors Coalition.
The California Bicycle Coalition is urging Newsom to sign the bill into law.

Haven’t we already spent enough money on these underused and unused bike lanes?
if a kid got hit just sitting waiting for the bus what makes you think were gonna be biking risking our lives people on there phones don’t pay attention

Does this mean more white posts on springs planted in streets slathered
with green paint ? ? ? Have seen increasing number of modified streets.
From curb out, what seems like four feet is bike lane, then parking spaces.
If a parked car opens drivers door and steps out on a busy street good
chance of being hit. Perhaps some injury lawsuits against cities will
remedy situation.

How many times have you seen a biker using one of those bike lanes?
Most cyclists (like me) are too afraid of unaware drivers to ride amongst them. Maybe if there were less distracted drivers, we’d feel a little safer.
It really has become Widget lane since adding those ridiculous looking white widgets. At least make some of them bl***, this is Walnut Creek after all.
The only purpose they seem to serve is as a slalom course for the kids on e-bikes, and as a hazard for seniors that get stuck between the sticks and the curb while trying to get into Kaiser.
I agree – Nowadays with although enhanced and e-bikes and all the entitled and clueless kids that ride them, I say let them pay the taxes and fees fund this themselves. How about reducing the gas tax (which is where these funds will be diverted from) and actually improving the roads.
