Two bills that would make it easier for California community colleges to create bachelor’s degrees cleared the Legislature this week. Senate Bill 960 and Assembly Bill 2694 now head to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk. A two-bill package, each piece of legislation will only become law if the other is signed. It’s unclear if Newsom will sign the bills, but the legislation is now supported by California State University, which had previously opposed both bills. Under existing law, community colleges are allowed to create bachelor’s degree programs that fill unmet workforce needs, but they can’t duplicate what’s offered at CSU campuses. Community college and CSU officials have often disagreed over what counts as duplication, leading to some proposed degrees being delayed for years amid disputes between campuses. Under the latest legislation, CSU campuses would only be allowed to claim duplication if their local service area includes or overlaps with the community college proposing a degree program. Even if the service areas overlap, community college degrees would be allowed to duplicate existing CSU programs when the CSU program has a transfer rate of less than 75% for three consecutive years.

Well then I can only assume the Cal State University system will be allowed to offer Ph.D. degree programs at some point in the near future. . . so much for the California’s Master Plan for higher education.
Why do we need a 3 tier college system if they are going to duplicate services? Other then prestige that is.
Considering one of the pet peeves of instructors at the Community college level is that
too often they have to teach Remedial level before they can even approach college
level instruction. Watch it all come down to scaled up tuition, and how much more the instructors demand for giving the DEI ‘letters’ on the sheepskin. Money Make$ The

..back when …. I went you ready had to work to get an AA or a BA / BS … now they practically hand them out – manty schools don’t even have grades – it “pass or fail”… and the bar is soooooo low anyway
