Contra Costa District Attorney Charges Suspect For Retail Theft, Carjacking Incident

Contra Costa District Attorney Diana Becton is pressing multiple felony charges against a suspect arrested for a retail theft and carjacking incident at Ace Hardware in Blackhawk, she announced Tuesday.

According to a District Attorney’s Office press release, 30-year-old Philander Johnson and two others attempted to leave the Ace Hardware store with multiple power tools in hand on Nov. 24. After store staff confronted Johnson, he allegedly pulled out a knife and escaped.

Johnson then separated from the other two unidentified suspects and allegedly entered an uninvolved person’s car. Court filings said Johnson directed the driver at knifepoint to drive him away from the area.

Upon arrival in San Ramon, Johnson allegedly entered a second occupied car and threatened the driver to drive him away.

Law enforcement officers were in the area during the interaction and apprehended Johnson, according to police.

Johnson is in custody as he waits for his arraignment, the District Attorney’s Office said.

The Contra Costa DA charged someone? Now that is news.

WC December 1, 2021 - 9:16 AM - 9:16 AM

Have no fear, she’ll reduce/drop the charges as soon as no one’s looking.

MH December 1, 2021 - 9:18 AM - 9:18 AM

Yes! Surprising!
Catch and release is aiding and abetting criminals. Liberal DA’s are responsible! AND those who vote for them.

PESFG December 1, 2021 - 1:21 PM - 1:21 PM

Only because the “incident” happened in Blackhawk! Had it happen in a middle-class or low-income city she would be crying foul and release the criminal BUT all these politicians only get up in arms when it affects the stores and cities where they and their families shop at because then it becomes personal to them.

I wonder if Philander will mysteriously disappear from jail like the Nordstrum thieves?

Charging is one thing, prosecuting is another.

I would be surprised if this DA would prosecute anyone other than some white guy for spitting on the street.

👏🏻 Finally
I pray that all the victims can recover from the trauma 🙏🏻

Anon December 1, 2021 - 9:37 AM - 9:37 AM

Not blaming victims here, but a legitimate question:
Does everyone drive around with their doors unlocked?

Sancho Panza December 1, 2021 - 11:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Nope. Newer vehicles auto lock. In this case, Johnson may have knocked on window of victim’s car, and unbeknownst to them wielded a knife to their neck as they rolled down the window and ordered to drive…

Nobody wanted the Johnson jab

“Philander”……rough way to go through life.

Chris December 1, 2021 - 10:18 AM - 10:18 AM

The only reason Diana is charging the suspect with multiple Felonies is due to the international coverage. It would be nice if we had at least one journalist to closely cover this ending result.I will bet my back account that when this case ends, the suspect will serve less than 8 months in the county jail and will be arrested again before Thanksgiving 2022.

Sign from Above December 1, 2021 - 11:09 AM - 11:09 AM

What a shocker! Given all the negative press she’s receiving, she picks a robbery in affluent Blackhawk to make her stand! What a gem she is!

Mary Knox for DA. She may be a democrat, but she is a very aggressive prosecutor with a strong record of convictions. She’s not a politician.

Sam Malone December 1, 2021 - 12:31 PM - 12:31 PM

Really. Becton is a piece of work. What a piece of crap she is. They are all running scared as elections are around the corner.

Be smart don’t keep voting these fools into office. They back track only when it suits them.

Points to ya mate, everyone should see this.

Gonna flee the state myself in due time. Just circling the drain at this point. Where to flee, though? We have such nice weather…

Mr X December 1, 2021 - 1:32 PM - 1:32 PM

Maybe crimes hitting the elite ares will finally get the attention of the elites. They like telling us little people that defunding the police and ending cash bail will make us all safer and if we disagree, we are just reprobates.

Anonymous December 1, 2021 - 3:38 PM - 3:38 PM

Philander Johnson, son of Philanderer Johnson.

You can’t make this up.

STUPID Philanders

Tim December 2, 2021 - 3:57 PM - 3:57 PM

Is it possible to file a class action against the county or DA and sue for dereliction of duty as a result of catch and release? Some people shouldn’t be allowed to repeatedly prey on society.
A concerned taxpayer.
