The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office has identified a 9-year-old girl killed in a crash early Sunday morning on a highway in Concord that sent four other people to the hospital with major injuries.

Danna Hernandez Tapia, a resident of Oregon, was killed when the vehicle in which she traveled along with five other people left the roadway just before 5:15 a.m. at the Interstate Highway 680/state Highway 242 split in Concord and rolled over several times. The driver fled the scene.

Four other females inside the vehicle were transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek with major injuries.

The gray Mazda CX-9 was traveling north when it traveled through the dirt median separating the two freeways and overturned several times, landing on its roof.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene. The California Highway Patrol said “several” occupants in the vehicle weren’t wearing seatbelts.

The CHP said anyone with information about the crash, or the whereabouts of the male driver, can call their Contra Costa-area office at (925) 646-4980 or email contact information to 320investigations@chp.ca.gov to be contacted by the investigating officer.

The number of people that crash at the split there is astounding. I must have seen at least a dozen in the 22 years I’ve driven past there every day. And I always assume the person to my right in the 242 fast lane at the split will try to cut me off and change lanes through the median at the last second, because that had happened many times as well.

People, roads are all connected. Just take the next exit.

RIP to the little girl. Horrific for her family and first responders to go through.

AGREE with everything your’ve said, Wage Slave! Google street maps on that very section of highway goes back to 2007. There was a steel light pole in the center of that ‘Y’ back then… stupid mistake on HWY Dept. I wonder if that pole plus driver error killed anyone?. The “Exit 50” sign does not last more than a year, till someone takes it out. Both sides of the ‘Y’ have “let’s see how many times you can flip” curb berms. I don’t know much engineering, but OBVIOUSLY someone could have a better plan than they have done in the last 50 years. Maybe a very thick stand of Oleanders bushes? That seems to work pretty well on all the Hwy Medians.

All that said about bad highways does not excuse the POS-chicken-brain-scum driver. (I’m thinking something like…maybe a fake/unlicensed Uber – ride?) There should be info out on the owner of the car.

God Bless that dear innocent child. And hope for speedy recovery for the injured women.

Many motorcycle fatalities on those high brick wall there and at Solano exit.Theres no way to bounce off or get knocked over the guard rail, you are crushed or killed instantly

The driver either fell asleep, was texting or was drunk.or all 3.

When i saw the headline i knew the name would have a hyphen……

Did the passengers know the driver? Is the driver missing or not known?

They of course hid their phones because they know thats how police find your associates and family.
They compare to mugshots, find their man

What is that suppose to mean? I have not seen any mentioning of anybody’s name. Besides lots of people have hyphen names.

I should have said i knew she would have 2 last names, but its what I meant.

Still smells like a human-trafficking case

I would hope the survivors gave up the driver’s name and details and it’s just a matter of time before this 🐓💩 is found.

The second she was identified so was he.

Aliens up to something illegal me thinks.

Upstanding citizens here..nuttin but.
