The following is from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District:

On Monday, April 29, at 10:24 p.m., Contra Costa Fire dispatchers received multiple phone calls reporting a building on fire in Concord. Engine 6 was first on scene and immediately reported heavy smoke and flames from a three story building and a 2nd alarm was started. Firefighters conducted a defensive fire attack due to interior floor collapses and significant structural damage.

Firefighters worked the incident through the night and remain on scene this morning monitoring for hot spots.

The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported. The Contra Costa Fire Investigators will be investigating the cause.

Buildings under construction or renovation are often more susceptible to fire due to inactive sprinkler and alarm systems. Also welding, soldering, and electrical work can cause fires which smolder for hours before erupting.

RAGEE,
.
Giovanni’s Bar and Grill was in the building for a number of years, beginning when the building construction was finished and open for business. I’m unsure if any other restaurants replaced Giovanni’s Bar and Grill.

Really??? April 30, 2024 - 7:31 PM - 7:31 PM

I’m guessing by the amount of damage it was intentional. Work has started and stopped several times with nothing being done in at least 6 months. Just my .02

Insurance job, the retrofit from a garage to housing looked like the homeless did it with pallet wood.

You can Google street view and see the place had multiple points for easy entry. After having had several fires in unoccupied or under construction buildings in the last few years, you would think the city would be on the lookout for this obvious problem. Obviously not.

For the last decade + I have asked city council repeatedly to prioritize the code enforcement budget so we would have enough staff to do pro-active enforcement. Yet here we are with less than 1/2 the staff we need for a city our size. No proactive enforcement. Backlog of requests. Little time available for follow up.

I hate to say I told you so….

I agree with you on the city not having the staff. I mean just look at all the campers parked on streets, boats in driveways. Yet I get dinged for having my yard landscaping done and the ass hat next door calls code enforcement to complain about the dust.

I say it had to be n insurance job! That place has been vacant for years and construction starts , the money runs out and bam it stops again and sits for months . Then all of a sudden it bursts into flames . No power there , totally vacant and poof it’s a huge fire , floors are colapsing. It’s so obvious!

The last that I heard this building was being converted from being a commercial property to a residential property consisting of 28 studio apartments.

Anyone notice the continuous arson problems in concord? Way too many of these big buildings catching fire.
