A motorcyclist killed Monday morning on state Highway 4 in Contra Costa County has been identified as 61-year-old James Woods Jr. from Rio Vista, according to the county coroner’s office.

Woods was headed west just before 8 a.m. when he rear-ended a vehicle near Loveridge Road and the border between Pittsburg and Antioch.

Investigators say he was thrown from his motorcycle and subsequently struck by a big-rig.

The other drivers remained at the scene to cooperate with the investigation.

The crash blocked four lanes of traffic, but the roadway had reopened by about 10:35 a.m.

California leads the nation in motorcycle accidents and fatalities. Lane splitting should be illegal.!

Does any correlation with weather (IE mostly year round riding in CA compared to other states), shear size of the state compounded with congested roads, people driving aggressively and not paying attention(regardless if the rider wasn’t splitting) pass any kind of thought by you besides your lane splitting ramble?? You do realize the number one cause of motorcycle fatalities in the U.S. is LEFT turns in front of motorcycles, kind of hard to do on the freeway. Not attacking but your single point of interest on splitting from the other thread has my interest.

RIP Mr Woods and condolences to family and friends
