These photos of the old Concord Ice & Fuel building on Market Street (across from Park & Shop) were taken right before the building was about to be demolished to make room for all the car dealerships in the 1990s.

I got hay and grain for my horse there

Kirkwood October 22, 2019 - 2:16 PM - 2:16 PM

I remember Concord Ice & Fuel. We would get baby chicks, scratch feed, bales of straw, and dog food. I remember seeing the coal bin. The place smelled like a hay barn (a clean smell).

nytemuvr October 22, 2019 - 7:58 PM - 7:58 PM

We used to get chicks there too in the 50s and 60s, I always liked the egg incubation trays and the hundreds of chicks. The best trips were when we bought a big block of ice to make ice cream during the summer. Willie the German Shepard was a great yard dog too, all great memories!

JC October 22, 2019 - 2:38 PM - 2:38 PM

Started working there in 1980, and to this day, still do

Mcd October 22, 2019 - 3:24 PM - 3:24 PM

In the early 70s, 80s I would go there to buy coal. It was $100.00 a ton. It would heat my house for a year. My house smelled like a train station. Politically not correct now!

Itsme October 23, 2019 - 7:42 AM - 7:42 AM

Not “politically”, “ecologically”. Science and economics. You’re making things dirtier for yourself and others, and it is a less efficient use of resources.

Turning everything into a political perspective allows people to deny things like science, numbers, facts…..

JonForTheWin October 22, 2019 - 3:51 PM - 3:51 PM

No doubt, this is where that thing from Stranger Things is hiding out

Steven Powers October 22, 2019 - 5:01 PM - 5:01 PM

Used to go and watch them unload from the trains

Billy Riccobuono October 22, 2019 - 6:10 PM - 6:10 PM

Was always there!!!! Had a lot of animals!!!! Born and raised on a ranch!!!! Love going to the Ice and Fuel!!!! 😎🌈🎼🎶✌️

slagheap October 22, 2019 - 6:12 PM - 6:12 PM

We used to buy ice there for hunting trips.

jon October 22, 2019 - 6:54 PM - 6:54 PM

Everyday I would go past it and the body shop next door and see what cars were bondo’ed and put outside to dry.

Antler October 22, 2019 - 8:57 PM - 8:57 PM

I’m not able to see it on the picture, but there were steep stairs leading up from train track level to the concrete loading dock, where the double-wide door was located. We bought dog food from there, and our three young children loved to pet the ducks and rabbits, and to talk to the biddies. The person at the counter would always give the children Tootsie Pops (even let them choose their favorite colors/flavors).
Then we would drive just up the street (toward Willow Pass intersection) and buy Hamburgers and fries from the drive-in that had the servers on roller skates. Do any of you know what the name of that place was?

jose October 23, 2019 - 5:47 AM - 5:47 AM

Antler, would that be A&W?

Antler October 23, 2019 - 7:13 AM - 7:13 AM

YES! And thank you, jose and Billy!
There was another one (now where Hunan Restaurant is) on Clayton Road, and there was a wonderful miniature golf course right next door.

CoCoOld October 23, 2019 - 7:19 AM - 7:19 AM

Or was it Chap’s?

Billy B. October 23, 2019 - 2:07 AM - 2:07 AM

It was A&W.And the Coors beer warehouse in the 70’s was right next to the Ice & fuel building.Doe’s anyone remember His Way Church, and Jacob’s Well coffee Shop on Pine Street?I grew up on Pine Street,& Detroit Ave through the early 70’s What a time & place to grow up!! My heart ache’s for what We had back then.

Silver Belle October 23, 2019 - 7:32 AM - 7:32 AM

Billy B., my sister worked at Jacob’s Well. They baked little loaves of bread and made soup fresh daily. City workers often came in for lunch. It was quite the place back in the 70’s!

jose October 23, 2019 - 4:26 AM - 4:26 AM

I used to work down the cross street towards Park n Shop…..Broadway & Harrison at Gaunt’s Machine Shop. That was in the early 1970’s.
After that I started at the Concord PO and we would see chicks arriving for Concord Ice & Fuel to be delivered.
I do remember an Auto body shop next to Concord Ice & Fuel too….wasn’t that Earl Sheibs auto painting place? I had my ’65 Pontiac LeMans painted there for something like $49.00.
Wasn’t that hamburger place down toward Willow Pass Rd call A&W?

nytemuvr October 23, 2019 - 7:55 PM - 7:55 PM

Miracle Auto Paint was next door….$59.95 in the late 70s.

Local Lady October 23, 2019 - 4:21 PM - 4:21 PM

My mom used to take me there to buy chicken feed for my pet rooster.

Jojo Potato October 23, 2019 - 6:15 PM - 6:15 PM

Concord feed (is it still the same owners?) is now in business on Hookston Road. I’ll be going over there soon to buy some cracked corn. Pretty cheap and I like to put some in my street. That makes the turkeys come out and slows down the traffic. Some morons have decided that this street is a convenient cut through. The city won’t do anything so I figure a couple turkeys standing in the road will slow them down. Whoo hoo!

nytemuvr October 23, 2019 - 7:37 PM - 7:37 PM

@Jojo Potato… Fatten those turkeys up for Thanksgiving, (Newscum just signed that new road kill bill), they cook up just fine with a broken leg or drumstick.

Gittyup October 23, 2019 - 8:51 PM - 8:51 PM

Only vaguely remember going there with my mother maybe once, and they had baby chicks and kittens. Vaguely remember begging for some of each and being told “No.” We had a dog at home, already, and she had chickens growing up and knew the work involved. We had our hands full harvesting walnuts and she didn’t want to take on anything else.

Billy B. October 23, 2019 - 9:47 PM - 9:47 PM

Hey Silver Belle,That’s good someone remembers,&knows what I’m talking about..I most likely knew Your Sister because I would go in there almost every day.Momma Mariea, ran the kitchen,She was a great Woman.I can still remember the wonderful smells of the daily fresh soup cooking as You open the door,or the fresh baked bread! Infact My friend Hal Linbarger cut the tip off one of His fingers one day while cutting up veggies for the daily soup!II passed on the soup for that day.His Way even had free movies every Friday night. The Place was a good influence on Us Kids We needed it because there was a lot of Darkness around Us as well .

Silver Belle October 24, 2019 - 11:31 PM - 11:31 PM

Billy B., my sister knows exactly who you are. She remembers you very well and has wondered for years about you and your friends. Do you remember that sometimes when the fresh baked cookies weren’t ready yet she would let you buy little balls of cookie dough? That was before we knew it was a health hazard! Sounds like you’re doing well. Glad you have such great memories of His Way and Jacob’s Well and that it was a safe place for you to hang out. You and your friends were welcome regulars!

Billy B. October 25, 2019 - 12:55 AM - 12:55 AM

Silver Belle,I do remember the cookie balls! I would say its time We move our conversation to a more private setting before We start to drive the other readers nuts!If We have not done so already. How about if I leave My cell phone number here and You and Your Sister can give Me a text,or a call some time?(925)812-3273..Thanks everyone else who has been reading this for being kind and not saying mean things about Our 45 year friendship being found and rekindled through this Web sight after all this time! Thanks ClayCord!

Silva October 25, 2019 - 7:51 AM - 7:51 AM

I think it’s wonderful!!!
