Following guidance from the White House, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state and local public health authorities, John Muir National Historic Site in Martinez (NHS) is increasing access.

The National Park Service (NPS) is working with federal, state, and local public health authorities to closely monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and using a phased approach to increase access on a park-by-park basis.

Beginning October 17, 2020, John Muir NHS will reopen access to:

With public health in mind, the following facilities remain closed at this time:

Safeguard that statue…

xj October 15, 2020 - 4:41 PM - 4:41 PM

Better search all everyone for cans of spray paint, rope and chains. We don’t want this statue coming down too.

AnimalLover October 15, 2020 - 5:51 PM - 5:51 PM

And here you go.

“Sierra Club apologizes for racist views of ‘father of national parks’ John Muir”

And while they are at it, let’s either get rid of or rename the two hospitals.

Ash October 15, 2020 - 8:56 PM - 8:56 PM

it is the guardian, they hate all that America stands for.

bdml October 16, 2020 - 8:58 AM - 8:58 AM

I wouldn’t use the guardian as toilet paper…it’s an insult to toilet paper across the world.

Evil Banker October 15, 2020 - 6:04 PM - 6:04 PM

What?! That racist statue still stands?!

Bad Nombre October 15, 2020 - 8:24 PM - 8:24 PM

Stands? It appears to have long ago taken a seat!

Martinezmike October 15, 2020 - 9:05 PM - 9:05 PM

no……it sits.

bdml October 16, 2020 - 8:56 AM - 8:56 AM

@ Evil Banker

Maybe just maybe you might do something of significance in your life and let’s say their a monument made in your honor. Years from now as people look at this Evil Banker monument and they think look at this racist let’s tear this down because I find it so offensive and it now has no value to me. Does this define you and are you not a product of your time which is definitely not considered progressive at this point? You don’t know John Muir personally so to attack him says a lot more about you than him. He was a pioneer what will be your legacy besides name calling?

“SARCHASM”:

The cognitive gulf that exists between those who are able to detect sarcasm and those who are not.

Russ Sayin October 15, 2020 - 6:57 PM - 6:57 PM

Pretty soon we are going to be so hypersensitive to everything that we will only build statues to people like the person that invented the peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Ash October 15, 2020 - 8:58 PM - 8:58 PM

can’t do it, it would be butterist and jellyist…

LOL!

Dr. Jellyfinger October 15, 2020 - 9:10 PM - 9:10 PM

How did he do all that hiking with two huge right feet?

@ Russ Sayin…. to my knowledge there is no statue of Julia Davis Chandler,
but there should be!

Dr. Jellyfinger October 16, 2020 - 7:57 AM - 7:57 AM

Whoa! Drop that chisel! Stop! No statue for Julia….
It has just come to my attention that Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwiches are RACIST!

Russ Sayin October 17, 2020 - 7:33 AM - 7:33 AM

Please note for the record: I, Russ Sayin, officially gave up on the world, as of 10/17/2020 upon reading that story. I will now only reference things in the most vanilla of fashion. Wait, can I even say “vanilla” without upsetting chocolate?

Concord74 October 16, 2020 - 8:27 AM - 8:27 AM

The miscreants either can not find Martinez or they think it is in Mexico! Amazingly this statue has remained unscathed but now that us posters have brought it out………!!??

Ricardoh October 16, 2020 - 10:10 AM - 10:10 AM

I am in favor of shooting anyone trying to destroy public or private property. They are useless people who will never become productive so really they are not needed.

badge1104 October 16, 2020 - 3:17 PM - 3:17 PM

So true, Ricardoh! These people don’t know how to contribute or build anything so they only want to tear everything down that others have built.

The Fearless Spectator October 17, 2020 - 10:06 AM - 10:06 AM

There is a rumor the city of Martinez plans to replace the John Muir statue with Reverend Al Sharpton. The statue will emulate early Reverend Al with the mullet and large medalians. It’s culturally important.
