Lawmakers Looking To Increase Salaries Of City Councilmembers

A state senator introduced legislation this week that would allow increases in city council pay caps, bringing salaries more in line with the cost of living.

Senate Bill 329, authored by Sen. Bill Dodd, was created in an effort to boost participation and diversity in California’s city councils by allowing councils to adjust their maximum pay to reflect inflation as measured by the California Consumer Price Index.

“My proposal will improve diverse representation and increase access to elected office for all Californians by making it less of a financial challenge to serve,” Dodd said.

City council salary caps are based on population size provided in state law. A majority of cities in California have a population of under 35,000 and have salaries capped at $300 per month with minimal allowances, according to Dodd’s office.

SB 329 is expected to be heard in committee in March. The bill is supported by the League of California Cities.

No pay raise until we get the roads fixed
I’m sorry but we have plenty of diversity
on our city council. 3 women, 2 men.

And here I thought they were already bought and paid for by the people that have money interests in whatever is going on in various county cities.

Pay raises are needed. It’s harder to get disguised payoffs and crooked back room deals these days.

Not until they’ve actually done their job as defined by the residents of their area.

That’s going to be a no for me- why increase salaries when there has been nothing done? Homeless all over the city, roads are a mess, I could go on..

Councilmembers all know what the pay is when when they sought out the position, if they didn’t like the pay then they shouldn’t have sought out the position, after all, they weren’t asked to do the job, they asked for the job!!!
.
Specific to the Concord City Council, they shouldn’t be voting themselves a pay raise as long as they’re saying that that permanent (until repealed by voters, if voters can get it on the ballot) 1% increase in the sales tax is necessary!!!
.
Current Concord Vice Mayor Edi Birsan is the most outspoken about the “NEED” to increase councilmember pay since the day he was first elected, at one point saying they needed to increase councilmember pay because they couldn’t trust a future council to do the right thing when they voted for increased councilmember pay. Concord City Councilmember Tim McGallian was equally outspoken about increasing councilmember pay, often making the same argument as Senator Bill Dodd, as well as saying “the only way to attract QUALITY people to the council is to increase the pay,” which he was ironically saying that he and the other 4 Concord City Councilmembers weren’t quality people, because quality people wouldn’t do the job for such little pay.

Promise them silver. Pay them in lead…… Criminals. Every one of them. Only around here would one of our elected politicians get arrested for drunk driving on Pine Hollow Road and still be reelected.
