BART Board Approves Parking, Fare Increases

BART’s Board of Directors approved a new pricing parking policy this week.

The proposed policy updates the allowed price ranges for BART’s parking spaces and allows for the floors and ceilings to be gradually adjusted based on inflation over time.

The proposed price range for the daily fee is $3 to $6.30 per day from its current $1 to $3 per day. For the single/multi-day fee, the proposed fee is $4 to $11 compared to the current price of $4 to $7; for the monthly fee, the proposed fee is $84 to $220, an increase from the current $63 to $105 range.

The proposal also extends the hours for which parking is paid to include afternoons and weekends at stations where lots are 90 percent full.

Due to parking being readily available, this change will not immediately impact most stations.

Parking prices will vary by station, and local parking taxes apply in certain areas. San Francisco has a parking tax of 25 percent, Oakland has a 18.5 percent tax and Berkeley has a 10 percent tax.

BART’s parking operating cost deficit was about $17 million this fiscal year, which is one of the reasons behind the implementation of the new policy. Updating the policy is also a way for BART to be in sync with parking prices across the Bay Area and among peer transit agencies, stated the resolution’s executive decision document.

The board also voted to approve fare increases. Fares will rise twice over two years, by 5.5 percent each. This is a compromise from the original proposal of a single increase of 11.4 percent.

The average fare, which is currently $4.20, will increase by 23 cents as a result, according to a BART press release.

While some board members and public commenters voiced concern about the impact of increasing parking and fare fees, granting a larger discount to low-income riders was approved. The Clipper START fare discount, which provides single-ride fare discounts to individuals aged 19 to 64 under 200 percent of the federal poverty level, will be increased from 20 percent to 50 percent.

The board also approved a budget that is balanced for the 2024 fiscal year but has a deficit of $93 million for the 2025 fiscal year. This reflects, BART board general manager Bob Powers said, the challenges BART has faced in emerging from the pandemic.

“It’s a stark reminder that BART alone cannot solve the financial crisis created by the pandemic,” Powers stated. “Right now, BART needs temporary state funding to bridge the gap while we pursue a sustainable source of operating funds to advance the Bay Area and California’s economic, climate and equity goals.”

Instead of cleaning out the weirdos, the homeless and the weed smokers to make it a more pleasant ride they raise the fares so more people stop taking BART.

This is them extorting the taxpayers to meet “climate and equity goals”. What are their climate and equity goals? Is this something the public voted on? This state is horrible. The globalists are horrible. Anyone pushing climate HOAX is horrible. People can barely pay their bills and these fools are charging for parking? Wouldn’t the state of commiefornia pay for people to park their gas cars for “climate” if it was a real thing?

It’s difficult comprehending the fiscal necessity/impacts of policies like this because they are generated from policy makers issuing them from a Democratic Socialist perspective, when my thoughts are processed in a capitalist mindset. These policies are outright stupid to me and I’m surprised it isn’t obviously stupid to them.

I will park at N. Concord Bart when I don’t have to worrie about my cat getting stolen, & my gas stolen. Itt costs more money to park there(after those things were stolen), I could have driven to the city for way less.

Wasn’t BART suppose to put up “new and improved” gates to stop gate jumpers? Whatever happened to that idea and why didn’t BART follow NY subways floor to ceiling gates. So now because BART “so called officials” lagged and on common sense on how to gain money instead of continuing to lose money, the raise the fare and parking to somehow stay afloat. Well BART, you ain’t doing @@@@ and BART will sadly become garbage.

…. so ridership is waaaay down …so they give people more reason bot to take BART… when will BART leadership get some common sense? if they really want to show they are trying everything to cut their shortfall let’s see management salary cuts, elimination of bonuses, and negotiate with the unions for wage freezes ….. but nooooooooo

Bart is so miss managed it would be better off closed down.That’s a real good decision to charge more to park at Bart when nobody is parking there now.That shows the mentality of the morons running it.How about letting all employees including management go.Shut down the unions and rehire all positions and start over.Lower salaries and less benefits.The employees don’t realize how good they have it.

I’ve been saying this for years.

BART is clueless to the last but the beauty of it is (for them) is that no matter how stupid they are they will still get bailed out by taxpayer money.

.. I understand a bailout would come to the vote of local residents – guess what my vote will be?

It takes a lot of money to run these long trains back and forth when you consider electricity, maintenance, and wear and tear on the trains. Why not shorten the trains to 1 or 2 cars. A bonus is you could put cameras in 1 or 2 cars and the criminals that sit in the back of those long trains might be less likely to act up.

@just…. But much of their rate increases are due to increased maintenance and operating costs of PARKING LOTS.

Agree that they ought to shorten trains to 2-3 cars. There’s no need to have mass transit of this magnitude when many are working remotely.

And don’t get me going on the HSR – another political boondoggle.

So much easier to raise the cost of riding BART and parking on the people that ride it than clean up its spending ways. Anyone ever count up how much it gets from other sources of funds? Such as long term bonds, committed funds from state and federal, not to mention add on taxes from the counties.

I stopped taking that cesspool years ago.

So, let’s say you open a restaurant and it’s popular for a while, but over the years you lose your good chef and your best wait staff. Their replacements are awful and your clientele decides to go elsewhere. I don’t think raising your prices is the answer

When janitors are making over $200,000 a year, you know there’s problems.

They need to raise the salaries of the Janitors exponentially. And then all of Bart’s woes will be solved.

There isn’t enough money, or a hazmat suit strong enough, for me to take a job as a janitor on Bart. Actually there isn’t a hazmat suit strong enough for me to even ride Bart.

BART is down 62% from pre-pandemic levels and they want to raise fares? That will entice more riders. lol
