Bay Area’s Transportation Planning Agency To Put Revenue Measure On Future Ballot

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the Bay Area’s regional transportation financing and planning agency, is looking to put a measure on a future ballot that could generate at least $1 billion per year.

The money would be raised by the MTC using one or more different options, including a sales tax, income tax or payroll tax, among other possibilities.

“Voters traditionally have supported transportation through bridge tolls or sales taxes,” said MTC chair and Napa County Supervisor Alfredo Pedroza. “Bridge tolls are not an option in this case and we think it’s smart to look at more than a regional sales tax. We’re proposing a few options so we have enough flexibility and enough time to get it right.”

The funds could be spent on things like road repair and safety projects and improving public transit systems.

The measure would have to win voter approval and could be on a ballot as early as 2026, MTC officials said in a news release.

In order for the MTC to put such a measure on a ballot in all nine Bay Area counties, they also need state lawmakers to pass enabling legislation, which state Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, has already introduced.

Wiener’s Senate Bill 925 can be amended with details about how such a measure would work as early as mid-February.

BART needs to get their labor costs under control. Whether I decide to vote for or against this measure depends largely on how money is allocated to BART.

Here we go again. The feckless state democrat government wants us to pay again(and again, and again, and again…)for something we are already paying for.

If a service does not work with the revenue it generates through its use, it should not exist.

This is an easy NO vote!

Ever notice that the answer to a govt agency’s fiscal shortfall is to raise revenue through tolls, fees, levies, and taxes?
Wouldn’t it be nice if they had to operate their budget like you and me?

When things are tight, I reduce my outflow to match my inflow. Tighten the belt and spend more on “needs” than “wants”. My vote is already a NO because I know that they will just set the new budget as a floor and will overspend that: leading to another cash grab down the line.

REDUCE GOVERNMENT SPENDING AND AT LEAST TRY TO OPERATE WITHIN YOUR MEANS!

In this state incompetence is not grounds for unemployment, at non private level it is often rewarded by having more taxpayer dollars thrown at the problem.
.
An why shouldn’t that be the case ? ? ? ?
It’s not like they’re spending their money . . . . .
Feeders at the public teat need a loud wake up call.

Let see if the Democrats understand this
NO, NONE, NOTA, NEW TAXES
Maybe you need to take some of the billions you throw at the homeless or the money you use for sex changes for prisoner. Also remember that Newsom managed to turn a surplus into a billion dollar debt.
But some of you will continue to send the same old Democrats to Sacramento and Washington. I just don’t understand some of you people.

We are already being fleeced at the gas pump with taxes that were supposed to go towards maintaining our roads. Then bridge tolls were increased because the states needs money to maintain our roads. The federal government sent the state money to improve infrastructure as part of sleepy/creepy Joe’s plan to put more Americans to work and improve the economy .
Before another infusion of our money and another bond measure /tax is put into effect, we need fiscal transparency and fiscal accountability from Sacramento. These politicians need a serious wake-up call!

Bobcat January 25, 2024 - 3:42 PM - 3:42 PM

No No No! If you give them more money they will never manage the problems. After months of promises BART is still running 10 car trains that are almost EMPTY. Wake the F#%K up!

Wow Weiner has another idea, just throw more money at the problem, no need to fix anything. I am afraid the lemmings will vote for more taxes. I wish i had taken that out of state job offer years ago, who knew Newsome could wreck the state so fast?

NOT ONE PENNY! Politicians will drain the lifeblood out of taxpayers if they can get away with it. I DEMAND that they REPAIR our deplorable roads instead! No one wants to ride on filthy, crime-laden public transportation with a bunch of fare evaders either! I’m done with this nonsense.

Hope Johnson January 26, 2024 - 8:00 AM - 8:00 AM

The MTC is an unelected government agency that did a hostile takeover of ABAG so it could be in control of billions of dollars. Neither of these “regional” planners has done much of anything useful for years, probably decades. Don’t give them any more money. They can’t “get it right” because they have no intention of changing anything that has caused them to get it wrong up to now, including allowing checks and balances on how funds are used.

WC Resident January 26, 2024 - 8:42 AM - 8:42 AM

The funds “could be spent on…”

In other words, they’re just planning on taxing you to death and using the funds raised as part of the general fund.

Legalized theft.

Never trust a democrat when it comes to money or control.
