California has decriminalized drugs and jaywalking. What could go wrong?

How about all the wacko lawbreakers that steal cars, rob stores, etc. that are not behind bars. Think they care about pedestrians?

I think a lot of the accidents would not have happened if Pleasant Hill had not made those colored crosswalks.

What percentage of pedestrian fatalities are itinerant/mentally ill/drug addicted people? CA has an outsized share of the nation’s population of those categories, and if they represent the lion’s share, then this is a problem downstream of a much larger problem.

Don’t forget the drunks out there like Antioch Mayor Lamar Thorpe, sorry Mayor Lamar Hernandez-Thorpe. He probably wanted to make it more difficult for people to google him when he runs for his next office.

They allow jaywalking, allow bicycles to ignore stop signs – what’s next? what do they expect?

.
The raw numbers (quantity) did increase. But CA also has a high population. What is the RATE of pedestrian deaths?
.
Do the numbers include pedestrians on freeways? … where they are prohibited?
.
How many deaths can be attributed to jaywalking?
.
How many pedestrians were killed as a result of an unrelated vehicle collision? Like being on the sidewalk but killed by a vehicle?
.
Of course the media chooses to highlight incidents to pull at heart strings.
.
Just as there are negligent motorists, there are also negligent pedestrians who do not behave defensively in their actions.

People driving has gotten so bad it’s dangerous for kids to ride their bikes and cross a street. Slow down everyone. That means you. And respect crosswalks.

Have you ever watched people crossing in shopping centers and on the road? No one looks anymore, they assume everyone sees them while on their phones and heads down.
Phones should be outlawed while walking. Go sit down and troll the internet and loudly take your worthless call on speaker phone for the world to hear it.’
Phones are supposed to be illegal while driving, but that doesn’t stop anybody.

For over 20 years I worked in one of the highrise buildings overlooking downtown Concord. A week didn’t go by when there was an intersection accident within three blocks of my building. Also it wasn’t unusual for a car to jump a curb and strike a building, vegetation or planter box. I remember of at least one fatal accident involving a pedestrian on a sidewalk. Two biggest reasons for these accidents: speeding and inattention.

When you elect stupid people you get stupid results. SF took part of the freeway out , then complained pedestrians are getting hit. Now oakland wants to take out the part between 24 and 880. I’m sure that will add to the totals.

I propose making jaywalking illegal. Otherwise some pedestrians have an entitled sense of immunity. My last post taking this position was deleted by the Claycord censor because they have never had a pedestrian get out of his car, pause when he saw me closely approaching then step in front of my car daring me to hit him and said “I have the right of way. ” His move required me to slam my brakes.

It is legal to cross the street outside of a formal intersection without being ticketed, as long as it’s safe to do so.
It is illegal to do so if there is “immediate danger of a collision” and a pedestrian can still be given a jaywalking ticket for that.

I advise anyone that drives to get a dash cam and CYA.
