Corner Bakery Cafe, located in Pleasant Hill’s Crescent Plaza, was closed last week by the Contra Costa County health department after inspectors found rat feces inside the restaurant, according to the inspection report provided to Claycord.com.

The health department says they received a complaint from a customer who claims to have seen a rat inside the restaurant.

Upon inspection, the health department found rat droppings on the floor in the storage room, locker room, water
heater and under the prep equipment area.

I just ate there last week. How can this be? I only eat at quality restaurants.

Apparently you were wrong about your quality selection

Such a disappointment when it’s somewhere you actually eat. Bummer!! Was good while it lasted :/

I usually figure that a restaurant is likely to be cleanest in the days after a health department closure and reopening.

concord ygnacio May 30, 2018 - 12:55 PM - 12:55 PM

Yep, I am going to eat there next week.

The takeaway from all these closures is that rats and mice are in the area of the establishment and unless the rodents are eradicated from the area around the restaurant, they will be back in as soon as it is reopened. When I was researching what to do about a mouse in the house and catching humanely, the information I found made it very clear not to catch the mouse humanely and take it outside because it would be back in before you were. You have to vigorously track down and thoroughly seal any openings that might be providing a point of entry, and there are many. In an establishment with a door to a hot kitchen left open, forget about it. The little darlings will stroll right in. Patio service … like putting out a sign saying “Mice Served Here.” You have to be vigilant to make sure you haven’t literally “invited” them to join you and actually provided a little door of some kind for them to enter. Once they’re inside, they’ll make their own little doors … in the walls where the only indication you have that they are around are their droppings. Good luck!

some “old timers” might’ve heard of “Mangle Mouse Mix” (or some version of it..gross details below).
you patch a hole in a wall where you know rodents come in.
patch it with?…(mice/rats eat EVERYTHING)
Mangle Mouse Mix. you break a bunch o beer bottles in a 5gal bucket.
then you add you plaster or foam compound. stir, patch.
lil buggers eat said Mangle Mouse Mix and literally shred their insides.
horrible, cruel, effective, smelly. don’t judge me, that’s what God is for.

Seems like a county wide Rat problem for Vector control. Does Vector control need to be expanded countywide?

Sideline May 30, 2018 - 1:31 PM - 1:31 PM

one also needs to remember; health departments have different standards from county to county.
Contra Costa is a pretty strict district (I am happy about that), but for example in San Francisco this probably would have not been an issue.

Every time we go in there all the employees are different, and 95% get your order wrong. They can’t even make a tuna fish sandwich, big clumps that aren’t mixed together. Clearly they need different management and a lot more attention to what is going on here. Like most places when it first opened management was very visible, checking on customers and cleanliness, but all downhill since.

Just Google… Rodent borne diseases, types of diseases carried and spread by rats. Bubonic plague, liver and kidney damage. Fleas can spread disease also if you are bitten by a flea that has been transported by a rat.

Have never liked this place. Both times I ate there, there was an unpleasant smell, like cleaning supplies. You’d think that would be good, but not when they are spraying the table next to you while you are eating.

Note to self: Hey… It’s not a buffet.

This place used to be one of my favorites but it really went downhill last year. I used to be a frequent customer and I noticed it started getting really dirty in the eating area. There were ripped seats in the booths, messy tables, food and napkins on the floor and inconsistent food quality. The last straw was when I went to get ice out of the soda machine, there was green mildew growing in the clear ice dispenser. I notified one of the employees and they said they will get it clean. I stopped by a week later to see if it was cleaned and the green mildew was even worse and then told another employee about it. I then filled out a survey online that they direct you to on your receipt you’re given. I told them about my concerns and got a response apologizing, saying that this location was under new management and they will get it taken care of. They also offered me a free meal and gave me the contact info of the person at this location to get a free meal. I declined figuring they would probably do something to my food if I told them who I was. A few weeks went by and as I was walking by I popped in and went straight to the soda machine to see if they cleaned it. Nope! Still nasty as ever. I figure if the front of the restaurant where the customers eat is that dirty, I wonder what the kitchen looks like where we can’t see? It looks like they haven’t changed their ways. I’m not surprised they got written up. It’s a shame because they had an amazing Chicken Cobb Salad.

As a former employee of Corner Bakery I want to say that it is a management problem. People with great work ethics used to feel secure in there positions until the recent management change that occured there at the end of last year. Have things been perfect, no, so I am not writting to address issues that customers have had there. I write this because I feel it is important to speak out on the environment that was allowed to flourish thanks to the lack of involvement from upper management. It started with HR complaints about how memebers of the restaraunts management team treated the people they were in charge of with demeaning language and attitudes that were never answered. Broken promises and outright lies about compensation for a job well done. That attitude trickled down and good people started to leave.
Priorities were not about our customers or the safety of the restaurant, it was about personal relationships between memebers of the staff. Conflicts arising and creating a less than professional work environment where people were not being appreciated and cleaning was not occurring. It got so bad for me that i left without notice, something I have never done in my life. I hope that people understand that Corner Bakery was being run with what seemed like soley a focus on profit which i feel makes for a bad “recipe” as far as a restaurant is concerned.

Ex Employee June 1, 2018 - 9:16 AM - 9:16 AM

As a former employee I can testify to the fact that the kitchen and food storage area is disgusting. There is an ongoing rodent issue that is not taken seriously and cleaning is never completed properly as they push so hard to keep labor hours down resulting in everything being half assed. I have personally seen rat droppings literally everywhere including food service areas such as clean dish storage as well as on countertops where food is prepared. And don’t even get me started on the shelving where food is stored, there is black and green mold growing on nearly every shelf especially the refrigerator ones where all the food is stored. I have been there for health inspections and seen the inspector just pass up these and major other issues that would make customers run to the door and never come back, trust me that if the inspector finally did his job and closed this place it was because it had gotten unbelievably bad. The employees here are underpaid and treated poorly by management and will never put the effort in needed to fix anything and most of the management is either inexperienced/incompetent, has given up, or in the GMs case is just too consented with his own personal life and relationships to properly run the store other than piping in once in a while from smoke breaks and phone calls to literally yell at the staff.
Do yourself and your health a favor and skip this place. You’ll thank me later.
