BART Weekend Track Work Ahead Of Schedule – Some Planned Closures Lifted

BART officials said Monday that some planned track closures near the Lafayette station on upcoming weekends are no longer necessary because construction crews rebuilding a large section of trackway are ahead of schedule.

BART had announced six planned shutdowns of service between Walnut Creek and Orinda starting last month because of the work repairing or replacing nearly 50-year-old track components.

Because the work is ahead of schedule, the planned shutdown this upcoming Saturday and Sunday has now been changed to single-tracking between those stations, meaning trains in both directions will have to take turns
traveling along one trackway, according to BART.

The single-tracking will eliminate the need for bus shuttles between Orinda and Walnut Creek, but riders should still expect delays of up to 30 minutes, BART officials said. Plans to temporarily close the two left eastbound lanes of state Highway 24 in the area remain in place.

Future weekends also will have improved service as the result of the work being ahead of schedule. Planned single-tracking and overnight Highway 24 lane closures on Sept. 21 have been canceled. The shutdown and
lane closures on the weekend of Oct. 12 have also been canceled, according to BART.

The remaining track shutdown weekends still scheduled are Sept. 28-29 and Oct. 26-27.

Nice to hear.

I was a technician for BART for a while, working on electronics and ATC. I was present for many of these rail and interlocking overhauls.

BART may have bad management and too much administrative bloat, but their track crew is one of the hardest working group of people I’ve ever seen. The pace at which they do these kinds of remodels is truly like clockwork.

Lafayette and nearby residents: prepare yourselves for more hours of power disruptions – BART has the same crane operator on the work schedule!

People love to bash BART employees I’d say 70% of them are hard working and do a great job. The true problem with BART is every year or so they add another layer of “Management” I’ve never seen so many people that are managers in my life. You take a Train Operator for example and they have a Foreworker, a supervisor, a line manager, assistant transportation officer, Chief Transportation Officer, assistant GM, GM, Board of directors. Every department has this crazy amount of managers. They could easily cut out a level or two of the managers and save MILLIONS AND MILLIONS a year.

Am so glad to hear it. With the Lafayette Art & Wine Festival right around the corner on 9/21 and 9/22 – it’s best if BART is operating as normally as possible that weekend! It is one of the best local festivals around – this year 300 vendors, and 4 stages for live bands. And, BuuBuus Friend will be there with artwork at a booth! Come and try to figure out who it is – a Where’s Waldo in real life!!!
