Research from genetic-testing giant 23andMe Inc. found that people with blood type O may be less likely to be infected with Covid-19. Scientists have been looking at genetic factors to try to determine why some people who contract the new coronavirus experience no symptoms, while others become gravely ill, and the company found differences in a gene that influences a person’s blood type can affect a person’s susceptibility to the virus.

Thank you for the information!

TOB June 10, 2020 - 12:42 PM - 12:42 PM

I recall it was only a 8-14% less chance than other blood types.

Dorothy June 10, 2020 - 12:48 PM - 12:48 PM

I sure hope that holds up true since I am O neg.

“people with blood type O may be less likely to be infected with Covid-19.”

And where did you source this information my friend? You have evidence to support your comment?

Or are you just spreading fake news which you probably already got second hand?

Pff

Before all you typo Os start going outside without a mask, do realize these reports are based on pre-publication, not peer-reviewed anecdotal data from sets of only 2,000 or so patients.

as of 06/10:

1,798 confirmed cases in CCC with 43 deaths = 2.39% death rate.

Gammy June 10, 2020 - 1:15 PM - 1:15 PM

Decimal in the wrong place. .0239%death rate

TTD June 10, 2020 - 2:02 PM - 2:02 PM

@Gammy – actually Kauai Mike has the decimal in the correct place = 1,798 * 2.39% = 43 deaths

Janus June 10, 2020 - 2:17 PM - 2:17 PM

@ Gammy

I cannot speak to quantum physics but I can speak with some confidence about basic arithmetic.

.0239 is the decimal form. To convert decimal to a percentage it is multiplied by 100.

In this case, 43 is 2.39% of 1798.

claycordcreekmike June 10, 2020 - 3:46 PM - 3:46 PM

I think you all have it wrong.
if you use the proper equation of total confirmed cases
1798 and then you take in to consideration # of total
deaths you would come up with
oh look squirrel

what I meant to say was release the hounds, if you want
to stay home that is a choice, if you want to go out then do it.

Krissy June 10, 2020 - 4:42 PM - 4:42 PM

Chances of getting Covid in CCC: 1798/1,154,000 = .00155
Chances of dying from it in CCC: 43/1,154,000 = .000023

Open CCC now!

24 more cases is good news: a smaller number than the previous few days.

Concordjete June 10, 2020 - 1:15 PM - 1:15 PM

I heard about the blood type research. The problem with that you do not know for sure unless you get an antibody test to get it right.

24 cases that is a huge drop today.

Tugboat June 10, 2020 - 1:51 PM - 1:51 PM

Combine 24 new cases with 1,760 tests and that is a pretty good day for Contra Costa County.

Mo June 10, 2020 - 2:42 PM - 2:42 PM

Only 598 tests were performed yesterday, per CC’s Health Service website, far less than the day before.

Mongoose June 10, 2020 - 3:14 PM - 3:14 PM

With 43K tested in a county of over 1 million…..I’m still trying to figure out WHOGAS…meaningless.

Cellophane June 10, 2020 - 4:19 PM - 4:19 PM

The manner in which the health department considers covid related deaths is still questionable.

It’s been widely publicized that a number of deaths attributed to the virus are not logically related and could be considered a stretch of the imagination.

I believe all of the numbers reported are askew.

greg June 10, 2020 - 5:35 PM - 5:35 PM

So the numbers are untrustworthy, which means of course they’re…inflated?

I don’t understand why this is now such a politicized issue. There are 111k grieving families. These are real people. Americans.

I don’t understand why it’s “Go out or stay in, you do you”. Right. Sure, but that’s not the issue. Go out, yeah. But..wear a mask. We all want things to open. We all want to go out. If we all do our part, and a mask seems like the smallest thing possible, I don’t understand the fight over it.

We used to be more patriotic when our country needed us. Now patriotism seems to mean “I’ll do whatever I want regardless if it hurts my neighbor.”

WC Resident June 10, 2020 - 5:46 PM - 5:46 PM

I believe the county health department is just the messenger. They summarize what the hospitals and testing labs in the area report.

Also, they don’t use the phrase “covid related deaths.”

Led June 10, 2020 - 8:28 PM - 8:28 PM

Some places may be overcounting Covid deaths in some ways, but there are almost certainly uncounted deaths too, from people who just never went to the hospital, or died in long-term care before testing was widespread. Bottom line, it’s undeniable that there have been a ton of “excess deaths” during the past few months in the US. It’s not a hoax. Now that said, there has been a lot of nonsense in the way our state and county have handled the SIP! But there’s no question this has killed a lot of people nationwide.

Jeraldo Rivera and ‘Jimmy Hoffa’.

Ozzie June 11, 2020 - 9:03 AM - 9:03 AM

The U.S. has now surpassed 2 million confirmed coronavirus cases. New infections are rising in at least 20 states, even as restrictions on daily life continue to ease.

Most other countries seem to have a better handle on it…. so in comparison someone absolutely can judge the federal government’s handling of this situation.

Ozzie June 11, 2020 - 10:31 AM - 10:31 AM

Texas and Arizona Republican run states which pursued an aggressive reopening are now the hotspots for CV19. Texas recording 2500 new cases in one day. Arizona hospital beds are reaching maximum and had to implement emergency plans for additional beds and ICU.

Ozzie June 11, 2020 - 11:54 AM - 11:54 AM

Social distancing people. Go out but stay out of groups.

The increase in Sac County’s cases come from two birthday parties, a church group and funeral, according to Sacramento County Health Officer Dr. Olivia Kasirye.
