Contra Costa County Set To Get About 10K COVID Vaccines – Could Be Months Before They’re Available To The General Public

Front-line health workers and residents of senior care homes and other congregant-care facilities could be given the first COVID-19 vaccines in the next few weeks, as the earliest supplies are delivered, Contra Costa County health officials said.

The first vaccines coming to Contra Costa County figure to be the ones from Pfizer that will need to be frozen at temperatures of 100 below zero (Farenheit), Contra Costa County Health Officer Dr. Chris Farnitano said.

But it could be months before the general public will be able to get COVID vaccine shots, he said, as shipments will start small. The first shipment is expected to be of about 10,000 doses.

Getting the general public immunized, Farnitano said, will be an “overwhelming logistical challenge,” but one that county health workers say that — unlike the COVID testing protocols that had to be created essentially from scratch — already has been tested for flu vaccines and other shots.

Anna Roth, the county’s health director, added that large health providers such as Kaiser Permenente and Sutter Health have “strong infrastructure” for giving vaccines to large numbers of people. She said that over the next few months, as more vaccine becomes available, more places to get shots will emerge.

QUESTION: Will you get a COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available?

Thankfully I am a Kaiser member. They have an excellent drive through in Martinez Kaiser. I hope they use the same system for the COVID-19 two vaccines.

LL Cool J December 10, 2020 - 2:47 PM - 2:47 PM

Do you know why it has to be frozen, Popcorn? Because it contains mRNA component that will change your DNA!

ERas December 10, 2020 - 2:52 PM - 2:52 PM

@LL Cool J I REALLY hope you are joking/trolling… cause nobody is stupid enough to actually believe that…

Yolanda December 10, 2020 - 9:27 PM - 9:27 PM

@LL Cool J– I don’t know who started this conspiracy theory, but it really needs to stop. The vaccine cannot and will not change anyone’s DNA. That is impossible. Please read up on mRNA vaccines and educate yourself.

MikeyV December 10, 2020 - 8:44 AM - 8:44 AM

This is great, if they vaccinate the old folks homes, infection rates will be cut by like 60% and we can all go about our lives, right?

Pam December 10, 2020 - 11:36 AM - 11:36 AM

It wont cut anything 😉 It only improve Bill Gates rate of return on his Big Pharma investment, they will just use you as recycle machine to dispose useless chemicals.

Cellophane December 10, 2020 - 8:45 AM - 8:45 AM

I think every politician should get the vaccine first.

I really hope this concoction of stuff works against the China Virus.

I may not be eligible to take the drug because of existing medical conditions.

In any case, I’m going to wait a couple of years to see how it works out.

There are plenty of government followers who will be first in line for the drug.

I’ll wait, watch and see.

Didn’t Trump already prove it safe for politicians?

claycordcreekmike December 10, 2020 - 8:48 AM - 8:48 AM

Nope. I will not be a guinea pig, The early results may show positive results in responses to Covid, but there is not long enough data to show what if any long term effects or side effects this could cause. I personally got the flu shot one year, and that was the sickest flu season I ever had in my entire life. Not willing to take a chance on longer term side effects..

Led December 10, 2020 - 2:08 PM - 2:08 PM

I get this, but getting infected with the virus can have long term effects too. (Very unclear how common that is, but it does happen with other viruses too.)

Ricardoh December 10, 2020 - 9:01 AM - 9:01 AM

CCC Health department again boosting the moral of the county. It could be months, stay in your house, and off of the telephone. Best to get under your bed. In months when the ccc Health says they are ready for me I will get it.

Cowellian December 10, 2020 - 9:07 AM - 9:07 AM

I will, once the VA makes it available.

I read that the VA will get doses for about 37,000 people. That won’t even protect their front line staff.

Tim December 10, 2020 - 9:10 AM - 9:10 AM

Yes

Sancho Panza December 10, 2020 - 9:32 AM - 9:32 AM

I will not get the COVID-19 vaccine, have never received the seasonal flu one.

An interesting development with the Board of Supervisors 12/8 meeting was that Supervisor Burgis suggested they ‘re-classify’ teachers as essential workers so that those that are working for school districts that are actually going to open up get vaccinated! Imagine that, NOW they are essential workers…

WC December 10, 2020 - 9:47 AM - 9:47 AM

Kamala H. said she won’t, if Trump tells her. These people are so stupid.

Rob December 10, 2020 - 11:16 AM - 11:16 AM

Good advice – given how much Trump has gotten so wrong about this virus from the start – he told us it would disappear last Easter.

I wouldn’t take it either if Trump told me to.

I follow the recommendations of medical professionals when it comes to vaccines.

But I do enjoy watching people who are against the government suddenly saying “Hey the gov’t is telling me to do it, so I’ll line up”.

BORbeliever December 10, 2020 - 9:53 AM - 9:53 AM

I am pro-vaccine and my family gets the annual flu vaccination, but I’m not getting this one. Too many unknowns. Will wait and see what happens.

Mary Fouts December 10, 2020 - 10:00 AM - 10:00 AM

The question is rather moot right now, given the realities of how long it will take for enough vaccines to become approved and manufactured to inoculate the general population.

The 10,000 doses will be enough to vaccinate 5000 people. CoCo county has a population of approx 1,160,920. 5000 = approx a mere .43 percent of the county population.

Some officials say enough vaccine will be available for the general population by late summer next year. But many officials say that would require everything to fall perfectly into place with manufacturing and distribution, and that a more realistic timeframe is the end of next year.

Led December 10, 2020 - 2:16 PM - 2:16 PM

That may be right, but it should *start* to get to the general population before then. And really, by the end of the next two months probably 20-30% of the US will be immune via infection. So you don’t need to vaccinate 100% of the adult population to quash this thing. It should start to make a big difference by February or March, I would guess.

ERas December 10, 2020 - 2:59 PM - 2:59 PM

And don’t forget that there are 3 or 4 more that are just waiting to be signed off. Once those hit it should roll fast.

Razzle Dazzle December 10, 2020 - 11:02 AM - 11:02 AM

Keep in mind that they do not know the short-term OR the long-term effects of these vaccines. There have been no trials for under 12 that I could locate and trials for the 12-17 yo group appear to be extremely limited.

Add reports of anaphylaxis, Bell’s Palsy and spinal ailments in some recipients and it is easy to see why so many people are hesitant in taking it.

And for Politicians volunteering to take it live on TV how are we to know they are actually getting the shot and not the placebo? Maybe they don’t want to be a guinea pigs either.

Led December 10, 2020 - 2:13 PM - 2:13 PM

I wouldn’t have my kids take this, but probably will do so myself when it becomes available. There’s just no serious reason for kids to be vaccinated against something so harmless to them. Let older adults get protection by vaccination and let kids and young peopleget protection going forward by getting infected.

anon December 10, 2020 - 12:23 PM - 12:23 PM

As a healthy male under 50, I would sooner be inoculated with the virus itself than take a barely-studied, liability-free franken-vaccine.

WCreaker December 10, 2020 - 12:47 PM - 12:47 PM

How should we really prioritize who gets the vaccine? OK I get it for hospital workers and those on the front line of treatment. But perhaps we should give it next to those who are causing most of the transmission so we can eliminate the person to person transfer sooner.

Led December 10, 2020 - 2:11 PM - 2:11 PM

It probably will be “essential workers” soon after, so yeah, that’s part of the thinking.

Pyrrhus December 10, 2020 - 2:49 PM - 2:49 PM

I would say front line first. Then those most at risk, followed by those that interact with the public (service related jobs), followed by the rest of the population.

Led December 10, 2020 - 2:10 PM - 2:10 PM

Yeah, its going to be health care workers and LTCF residents first – at least that’s what I’m seeing from places that have made public announcements of the priority lists.

ERas December 10, 2020 - 3:03 PM - 3:03 PM

So your evidence is a tweet from a random guy on twitter posting people making faces and a conspiracy newspaper from 9 years ago… right…

Googlar December 11, 2020 - 4:34 AM - 4:34 AM

Appeal to authority is a logical fallacy.

Lying to make a point doesn’t make a point. Where did you get the value of 9 years, and who taught you grammar?

Googlar December 11, 2020 - 5:12 AM - 5:12 AM

Pfizer statement, implying a risk ratio close to RR=1.0 :

“The observed frequency of reported Bell’s palsy in the vaccine group is consistent with the expected background rate in the general population”. (p.38)

https://www.fda.gov/media/144245/download

TRUTH :

Annual incidence of Bell’s Palsy (BP) is typically referenced as 15-30 cases per 100,000 population.

Vaccine trial results :

4 cases of BP occurred at 3, 9, 37 and 48 days after vaccination respectively. Mean 25 days.

Vaccinated group: n=18801, Placebo: n=18785

Expected cases (X) and Risk Ratio (RR) at time of the 4 observed cases :
X RR
Expected cases in 3 days: 30/100000*18801/365*3 = 0.05 1/0.05 = 20
Expected cases in 9 days: 30/100000*18801/365*9 = 0.14 2/0.14 = 14
Expected cases in 37 days: 30/100000*18801/365*37 = 0.57 3/0.57 = 5.2
Expected cases in 48 days: 30/100000*18801/365*48 = 0.74 4/0.74 = 5.4

CONCLUSION:

Trial results indicate a risk ratio for Bell’s Palsy of RR=5.4. This is conservatively calculated based on a background rate of 30/100k. The lower estimate (15/100k) doubles the risk ratio to RR=11.

Notable quotations from Pfizer briefing:

“At the data cutoff date for the EUA, reactogenicity events were not collected from adolescents 16 to 17 years of age”

“Reactogenicity data from a total of 100 adolescents 12 through 15 years of age enrolled in C4591001 phase 2/3 were provided in the EUA submission. However, the Sponsor did not request inclusion of this age group in the EUA because the available data, including number of participants and follow-up duration, were insufficient to support favorable a benefit-risk determination at this time.”

ERas December 11, 2020 - 1:55 PM - 1:55 PM

See, THAT’S evidence, actual data, not just random pictures. Thank you.

ERas December 12, 2020 - 1:30 AM - 1:30 AM

Also, Googlar, sorry, just realized you asked about the 9 year value… I saw the 2011 date at the top right of the second picture, turns out it is actually older than that. That just says that was the date of the photo, not the article… sorry.

LL Cool J December 10, 2020 - 2:51 PM - 2:51 PM

All for a man-made virus that will 99%+ NOT kill you. The vaccine will change your DNA, hook you up via the nano-technology to some “system” and they will be able to detect who go it by scanning your hand (where this vaccine will go via a bandaid-like delivery system) with a phone app. This is done via Luciferase. Research it. Not kidding. Mark of the beast.

Sincerely, I hope those of you clamoring to take it, make it through.

ERas December 10, 2020 - 3:05 PM - 3:05 PM

Please be trolling… this is the second post like this on the same page… and after everything I’ve seen lately I honestly can’t tell if you are or not…

Googlar December 11, 2020 - 4:35 AM - 4:35 AM

ERas, you’re going to have to accept that people have differing opinions. Calling them trolls for having a different opinion than you is bigoted and intolerant.

ERas December 11, 2020 - 1:59 PM - 1:59 PM

Googlar,
No, I fully accept that others have different opinions, thats what makes this world good, and it leads to wonderful learning discussions. But did you read the paragraph above? That’s not a different opinion, thats full out nutter… like seriously, thats beyond flat earth level…

Googlar December 11, 2020 - 7:04 PM - 7:04 PM

ERas December 10, 2020 - 2:57 PM - 2:57 PM

Yup, its frontline people and high risk first. I can wait for a later turn, I don’t have much risk and can hold out until its publicly available, let them have first dibs.

Kauai Mike December 11, 2020 - 6:25 AM - 6:25 AM

Never been an annual flu shot taker. Who trusts fake media, Big Med, or government?

As a ‘vulnerable’ old timer however, I will get this one as Covid has curtailed my life and I want that to end.

Remember that Polio, Measles, and other scourges were wiped out with vaccines.

Thank Trump for his leadership in getting this rolled out at Warp Speed!

Googlar December 11, 2020 - 1:30 PM - 1:30 PM

Polio vaccine?

More than 200,000 children got the polio vaccine, but within days the government had to abandon the program.

“Forty thousand kids got polio. Some had low levels, a couple hundred were left with paralysis, and about 10 died,”

ERas December 11, 2020 - 2:02 PM - 2:02 PM

Um… you do know they still administer the polio vaccine right?
