Today’s question:

California has a huge budget problem that could force thorny decisions from Democratic leaders who enjoyed a more than $100 billion surplus just three years ago, the Associated Press reported.

Governor Newsom announced on Friday a $26.7 billion deficit, but it’s really closer to $45 billion. That’s because Newsom didn’t include roughly $17.3 billion worth of actions he and lawmakers already agreed on, according to the AP.

QUESTION: What programs/services/jobs would you cut if you were Governor of California?

Talk about it….

Let’s start with ending SB 770 known as CalCare.
If one believes that we are in dept now, wait for the Newsom care bill.

I use CalCare as I have to take of my bedridden mother along with trying to work. You might think of the people before you post.

Fire the ideologues. They are delusional and out-of-touch with reality. It’s difficult though as I had to deal with these kind in a job solving organization that was formed. Somehow they never learned how life really works.
&nbps;
The state needs to focus on efficient government not the drunken sailor kind.

Search the services, jobs, and programs for the word “equity.” They’ll find plenty of fat to cut.

Im thinking getting rid of Newsom is off the his table??? That would be the best case scenario.

Let’s start by cutting the legislator’s budgets and make calif. legislature part time instead of full time. That way they will have less time to come up with bills/laws that only benefit a subset of Californians. In my opinion, any law that they pass should apply to or benefit 80% or more of Calif. citizens. Since many of them aren’t representing their constituents, then let them not represent us only half the time.

Not just their budgets but their perks too. Then add if no budget is passed on time legislators and governor not only don’t get paid until one is passed but no back pay for the time it takes to get one.

Itsme May 15, 2024 - 7:06 AM - 7:06 AM

Dorothy that goes for Congress as well!

Governor Newsom does not need to do budget cuts. The solution is to increase taxes to make up budget shortfall. Republican oligarchs, like ones in the big oil industry, need to pay their fair share of taxes and close any tax loop holes being exploited by the wealthy.

So …. what exactly is fair share?

The Fearless Spectator May 14, 2024 - 7:05 PM - 7:05 PM

It’s impossible to tax California into prosperity.
Rather, tax revenue will continue to erode as successful business and successful citizens continue to leave the state as has been the trend. They obviously aren’t leaving for better weather.
The state of California desperately needs new management.

Original G May 14, 2024 - 1:56 PM - 1:56 PM

Absolutely agree with Bruce, legislature needs to be part time.
.
Texas Legislature meets second Tuesday in January each odd-numbered year.
Texas Constitution limits regular sessions to 140 calendar days.
Enough time to get the important stuff done but not enough time to completely screw the state up.
.
DEMs in CA state legislature try to out liberal each other every year.
Given how screwed up this state is, DEM politicians should ALL be voted out of office.

Cut all the free benefits to all the freeloading illegal invaders that don’t belong in our country. They can start by eliminating free medical care, internet, cell phones, food stamps, WIC, and education. Then they can cut the free legal services, crisis centers, and anything else they are giving to illegal invaders on the taxpayers dime. Who knows, maybe if we stop all the free stuff, they will self deport and go back to their homeland.
Another thing I’d like to see stopped is the police and courts that use bilingual interpreters, and all the printed material being printed in several foreign languages. In 1968, California voters voted Prop 63 into law, establishing English as the official language of California. The law makes it illegal for the state to conduct official business in any language other than English.

California Toad May 14, 2024 - 5:32 PM - 5:32 PM

One example of why interpreters are necessary: Witnesses in criminal and civil cases may be crucial to the outcome – what happens to the case if your key witness(es) don’t speak English? Many plaintiffs – defendants could not afford to hire private interpreters. Another example: if law enforcement believe they could have important leads from non-English speaker witnesses or family members – maybe in an emergency. Having a panel of qualified interpreters to contact could mean the difference between life and death for someone.

The high speed rail to no where, the infinite number of hand out programs to homeless that don’t want to be “helped” – they just want a handout, the numerous “green” initiatives Newscum started that are nothing more than money pits of pork, open up oil drilling and / or other energy generating initiatives so we don’t have to pay a premium to brig it here in Calif, let prisons be prisons instead of spending millions to have them be “training centers” that is nothing more than letting them off the hook.. I know I’ll think of a bunch more……

Old-school guy May 14, 2024 - 4:50 PM - 4:50 PM

Eliminate the homeless programs. It’s not working. I just read $27bn is unaccounted for. How does one misplace that much money? All the programs have been useless and attract more homeless people. CA now has 30% of the country’s homeless.

Cut all monies to the U C college system, no more tax payer money to any NGO, eliminate any race based entitlement’s, no civil service/ union protection for state, county, municipal employees, as a start!

2) reduce the number of prisons by releasing non violent offenders.

Crimes that by California Statue are considered “non-violent” and why Paul’s idea to save money is a really really really bad idea.

First.. The Governors Office.. Then Trim the Legislature by 1/3.. They only follow the “Script” so their vote is pretty useless… SO, why pay for the pre-determined outcome..

CALIFORNIA’S CLIMATE COMMITMENT. California is advancing a $48.3 billion multi-year commitment, alongside over $10 billion from the Biden-Harris Administration in federal climate funding, to implement its nation-leading initiatives to slash pollution and achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, protect communities from harmful climate impacts, deliver 90% clean electricity by 2035, hold big oil accountable, and more.

Our legislators trying to tackle weather and energy. It would be more effective to burn those 48 billion dollars for energy than anything the dullards trying to run the lives of everyone living in this state could dream up in those tyrannical minds of theirs. I truly fear what kind of protective measures cretin weiner would dream up. And, they’re going to hold “big oil” accountable…morons.

Cut elected officials’ salaries and all monies that fund any aspect of illegal aliens. We’re sick and tired of these socio-economic parasites.

Parent May 14, 2024 - 8:52 PM - 8:52 PM

@Paul
You forgot your sarcasm fault because you cannot be the naive and ignorant.

As for the question
1) Newscum salary’s
2) His perks of traveling to other countries with his countless body guards to foreign countries and even neighboring states. You rare the governor or CA, so work here … not everywhere but here.
3). Anything that supports an illegal immigrant in this country, except the cost to ship them back across the border. This means children, woman and men. Cruel, yes .. but why are covering the cost to raise a child that is not a citizen of this country?
4) Equity crap
5) Diversity crap
6) Reparations crap

That alone should save us BILLIONS

14
Sara May 14, 2024 - 11:18 PM - 11:18 PM

Stop the one size fits all electrification. Making it mandatory does not work. Too costly. For example I don’t have solar however I do have a whole house fan which saves a tremendous amount of energy by cooling my house down at night and requiring much less ac during the day.

Hayden Barsotti May 15, 2024 - 8:33 AM - 8:33 AM

Cut 5% or 10% from every department state wide. Freeze all hiring.
