Contra Costa County Dashboard

State of California dashboard

The State of California COVID-19 dashboard (https://covid19.ca.gov/stay-home-except-for-essential-needs/) says the Bay Area region now has 23.4% of ICU beds available.

The Contra Costa County COVID-19 dashboard (https://www.coronavirus.cchealth.org/hospital) says the Bay Area region has 1.5% of ICU beds available.

The Bay Area region needs to get to 15% in order to move into the Purple Tier, which would ease restrictions.

All numbers were updated today, and both the county and the state include the following counties in the Bay Area region: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma.

We have been unable to get an answer from both the county and the state as to why the numbers are so far off.

The state one is a projected over the coming weeks they did the same thing in the Sacramento area earlier.

Googlar January 23, 2021 - 2:23 PM - 2:23 PM

County hasn’t caught up with the new orders.

WC Resident January 23, 2021 - 2:50 PM - 2:50 PM

Multiple media organizations have been asking the state about this. Their answer is that “it’s complex and you would not understand. We don’t want the public to have the data nor the methods used as they may arrive at different interpretations.”

They also said the reason for opening up the Sacramento region despite the data showing that it’s not eligible to be opened is that they make their decisions based on projections but that they won’t tell us how those projections are done. They had no answer for why Sacramento was opened without warning. It left restaurants in a lurch because they need advance notice to order food, set up staffing schedules, etc.

Democrats are STILL unable to get their lies straight!

And I read that Gavin bin Lyin’ is refusing to hand over data on infection rates to the press. He is following in the footsteps of Aunt Pelosi.

KT January 23, 2021 - 3:55 PM - 3:55 PM

CCHS can go suck eggs. Sac is open and Newsom and CCHS is in hiding and I hope the mainstream media does a deep investigation on why he’s hiding information. Carry on with your lives. Let’s all go to Sac since his region is open.

The Fearless Spectator January 23, 2021 - 4:53 PM - 4:53 PM

The mainstream media doesn’t investigate anything. They are not journalists either. If a real journalist investigates and attempts to get a story out that doesn’t favor the narrative, they are locked and blocked.
If we ask a question, we are conspiracy theorists and racists.

Healthcare should be off limits for political propaganda. Unfortunately it was the best tool the left had in 2020 so they ran it into the ground.

Looks like the real threat of a recall vote is putting a lot of pressure on Newsom to come up with some new numbers.

Since federal funds are involved, hows about a FEDERAL Grand Jury demanding that data from CA ? ? ?

Hospital Worker January 23, 2021 - 5:36 PM - 5:36 PM

The only way this ICU bed metric could make any sense would be if they counted the actual number of beds. Judging from County’s erratic day-to-day numbers, they must be counting the number of staffed beds, which is ridiculous. Each hospital will adjust its staffing according to the number of patients. A hospital would have to be crazy to intentionally allow more than 15% surplus of workers. You only see that when a unit is minimally occupied, but they still have to use the three nurse minimum. That usually does not happen until Memorial Day.

Amy January 23, 2021 - 9:01 PM - 9:01 PM

Hospital staffing is census driven. It’s a business not a charity.

Gasman January 23, 2021 - 9:19 PM - 9:19 PM

Ahemm….one little detail they fail to report….what is the number of non-resident COV-19 patients currently occupying managed CCC ICU beds? You know, the cases they shipped in overnight from down South, when So.Cal’s ICU Bed #’s had dropped through the cellar and we were in the 30-40 percentiles for weeks prior, and then wamo, overnight we dropped to 5%.

WC Resident January 24, 2021 - 10:27 AM - 10:27 AM

@Hospital Worker – The county is counting staffed ICU beds and says so on https://www.coronavirus.cchealth.org/hospital with “% of staffed ICU beds that are unoccupied in Contra Costa County” and “Number of ICU beds that are staffed and available.”

To get licensed or accredited as an emergency room, trauma center, ICU, etc. a facility needs to show that they have certain people on site and others on standby.

The normal target number for an ICU seems to be that 25% of the staff is available and on site. It does not mean they are idle. If a surge of patients comes in and availability drops below 15% then additional protocols kick in.

Sancho Panza January 23, 2021 - 6:23 PM - 6:23 PM

I went to the California Department of Public Health site and there is a news release for today regarding hospital ICU capacity….Interesting that Contra Costa County is not one of the counties impacted by ‘Hospital Surge Order’ and they do give some criteria about how they estimate ICU capacity projections. Take a peek:

Concord Res January 23, 2021 - 9:09 PM - 9:09 PM

@claycord – the numbers are not apples to apples. The state number is misleading because it’s a “4 week PROJECTED ICU availability” where as CCHS is based on the latest available ACTUAL ICU availability.

In 4 weeks we can see how great the states projected ICU availability is by comparing the 23.4% projected number from today to the CCHS number reported on that day in 4 weeks.

Led January 23, 2021 - 9:51 PM - 9:51 PM

There’s a rule in the State Employee Handbook: When in doubt, obfuscate!

WC Resident January 24, 2021 - 5:16 PM - 5:16 PM

@CLAYCORD – It’s current ICU availability using a formula that they refuse to publicize. It may well include aspects that make it a projection.

The state has said they are using projections of ICU availability, again using methods and formula that they refuse to publicize, to decide which areas should be open or closed.
