Police have arrested a man suspected of firing a gun Friday night as he fled the Macy’s store at Sun Valley Mall with more than $1,400 in cologne stolen from the department store.

Concord police said Jesse Allen Alexander, 37, filled a bag with bottles of cologne about 7 p.m. and then fired a shot at security workers when they tried to stop him. Nobody was hit by the shot, police said.

Alexander fled in a truck that was later located by Lafayette police, who arrested him after a foot chase, Concord police said.

Alexander was also wanted for violating his federal probation, police said.

Interesting, sounds like the same “Jesse” who was chased down in Eureka in 2009.

Mika April 21, 2021 - 9:32 AM - 9:32 AM

I’m more surprised there were security guards that tried to stop him. I’ve personally witnessed grab and runs at the mall and seemed like no big deal to the stores. Just another day at the mall!

SunValley Mall have their own security, they patrol the mall and are in uniform saying security. Macy’s have their own loss prevention. The have a room with several monitors where they can follow someone, they also have several lost prevention walking in store all day long, they do not wear a uniform, but blends in with the customer’s. When someone suspicious are detected loss prevention can follow them in person and on the monitor until they have enough evidence to apprehend them. Stealing is a big deal for the stores, they loose a lot of money to stealing.

This is why so many companies don’t confront people for shoplifting any more. Idiots like this. I understand he’s a parolee too, can’t wait to hear how he’s on the streets as part of restorative justice or how we are using mental prisons now because of COVID.

Badge1104 April 21, 2021 - 12:33 PM - 12:33 PM

It doesn’t surprise me that he’s a parolee. They’re all over the place. The California Democrats let all the prisoners out of jail and will not send a new to jail for any crime so you can expect it to get worse and worse. I wish you Democrats out there would wake up and see what your party is doing. It isn’t the good old part of you remember.

Doh April 21, 2021 - 1:38 PM - 1:38 PM

Alexander is more than a shoplifter. He fired a gun while committing his crime. Alexander will have a much harder time getting out of jail because of it. .

Wow, the Democrats? Prison catch and release became a part of Schwarzneggers Days! A republican. Your blaming is such no solution.

ChuckStir April 21, 2021 - 9:42 AM - 9:42 AM

I say give him a walk if he could not afford it. What is wrong with wanting to smell nice.

Gittyup April 21, 2021 - 12:27 PM - 12:27 PM

$1400 nice?

PC April 21, 2021 - 9:49 AM - 9:49 AM

He must have been a real stinker!

On Probation The new norm in CA, is anyone surprised ? ? ?
How does that go, was theft committed for financial gain or personal need?
Guess that would depend on where you are, up wind or down wind.

Simonpure April 21, 2021 - 10:36 AM - 10:36 AM

…and federal probation to boot

Gittyup April 21, 2021 - 12:28 PM - 12:28 PM

Maybe he NEEDED $1400 worth of cologne more than Macy’s did.

RTC April 21, 2021 - 10:55 AM - 10:55 AM

I’ve been a customer of Sun Valley Mall since the days when they had an ice rink. It is so disappointing to see the decline in the quality of the stores, kiosks, and clientele. They now cater to a more ghetto element. I wonder how much longer Macy’s, Sears, and Penney’s will remain there.

G April 21, 2021 - 11:28 AM - 11:28 AM

@RTC –

Sears closed like 6 years ago………

JC Pennys closed like 3 years ago………

Badge1104 April 21, 2021 - 12:30 PM - 12:30 PM

No, those stores are still open at Sun valley. Those Sears feels like it could go under any day by the lack of merchandise in sales clerks. Penny’s is doing well I go there all the time. Yes unfortunately the mall has now catered to the low end most of the stores seem to be for basketball shoes or ball caps…. Unfortunately conquered is gone that way too and all society

hanne jeppesen April 21, 2021 - 12:41 PM - 12:41 PM

As for Macy’s we cater all ALL customer’s who come into the store to shop and ready to spend money. Even if they don’t buy that day, we make sure they have a positive experience. And we have been very, very busy.

Anonymous April 21, 2021 - 1:09 PM - 1:09 PM

The last time I was in Sears was probably 2004. I was in the basement looking for some tools and noticed ALL the announcements on the PA system were in Spanish. I found what I needed but haven’t been back since.

hanne jeppesen April 21, 2021 - 9:01 PM - 9:01 PM

RTC What exactly is a ghetto element? Macy’s is very busy, we have customers of all races, ages etc. Most are working people that are looking for clothing for work, a party, a funeral, a wedding etc. Many have Macy’s card, others pay cash or with a debit card. 95% of our customers are nice and polite and I enjoy helping them.

RTC April 22, 2021 - 10:33 AM - 10:33 AM

@Hanne
You need to walk the full mall (not just Macy’s) on a Sat. or Sun. afternoon.

American Citizen April 21, 2021 - 11:04 AM - 11:04 AM

Crime is legal in California. Snatch and run is the new norm. This is no surprise.

Rob April 21, 2021 - 11:19 AM - 11:19 AM

If crime is legal, why was he arrested?

Chicken Little April 21, 2021 - 12:35 PM - 12:35 PM

Rob,
They were probably just trying to make him register to vote.

hanne jeppesen April 21, 2021 - 12:43 PM - 12:43 PM

Both Sears and JC Penny’s are still open, although both have financial problems, their merchandise is outdated as far as I can tell.

The Fearless Spectator April 21, 2021 - 2:01 PM - 2:01 PM

Chicken Little: You hit the ball out of the park with that one!
Oh the irony of California living……..

Rollo Tomasi April 21, 2021 - 4:13 PM - 4:13 PM

We’ll have to wait to see if he’s charged, Rob.

Tsa April 21, 2021 - 6:43 PM - 6:43 PM

Chicken Little – you have the best response, Lol

hanne jeppesen April 22, 2021 - 11:59 AM - 11:59 AM

I do since I work in the mall. Yes, at times I see someone that might be deemed undesirable, however you cannot judge anybody by the way they dress. If they are not loud and do not cause a ruckus they have as much right to be there as anybody else. Today’s young people of all races dress much different than we did in out youth. However, being a child of the sixties (meaning young in the sixties) can’t say the hippie look was all that attractive, and certainly enough of the older generation (including my parents) condemned the look. However, everyone I knew and all my friends were honest people, most worked or went to school full time.

Darwin April 21, 2021 - 11:12 AM - 11:12 AM

Keep voting DemoRat and this is what you get! No personal accountability!! He was probably turning his life around. Let’s see what DA Beaton does? If he’s. Last I checked if you fire a gun at someone it’s considered armed robbery all attempted murder. It’s funny how the media waters down the severity of the crime if it doesn’t fit their narrative.

Wake up people.

Concord74 April 21, 2021 - 3:53 PM - 3:53 PM

Becton won’t do anything! She will cop out since he is a Federal parolee. She will claim not in her jurisdiction. Easy out!

sam malone April 21, 2021 - 11:33 AM - 11:33 AM

Surprised the heck out of me that police and security did anything to apprehend him. Now a days it is free for all.

It is about time these thugs and entitlement crowd get what they deserve as they drive up prices for the rest of us fools who obey the law and pay over our fare share.

Males stealing cologne?.. The new world of Smurf hair and pansies is such a joke.

Yves Harlowe April 23, 2021 - 9:57 AM - 9:57 AM

I suspect they steal the cologne and then sell it. I’ve been approached a couple of times in places like the Target parking lot by males trying to sell cologne. I always refuse because I always suspect it’s stolen merchandise.

Snickerdad April 21, 2021 - 1:05 PM - 1:05 PM

Well our DA will probably let him walk, you know it was only 1400 dollar and he didn’t hit anybody when he fired the shot so it all right. Hopefully they have the brains to call the feds before they let him walk.

Stealthy Mama April 22, 2021 - 6:55 AM - 6:55 AM

Jesse probably likes to smell a man-whore. That is why he stole $1400 worth of cologne.
