Concord Police Officers Safely De-Escalate A Dangerous Situation Near Popeye’s In Concord

The following information is from the Concord Police Dept.:

On April 6, at 9:19 p.m., Concord Police Dispatch received several calls of a man cutting his own neck with a sharp object at the gas station in the 5100 block of Clayton Road. Several officers began to respond to the scene.

Medics were immediately requested and staged nearby as this person was bleeding from the neck.

Not wanting to have the vehicle traffic on the busy roadway be a factor, officers blocked and rerouted traffic to provide for a safer environment to address the situation.

An on-duty officer, who is a trained member of our Crisis Negotiations Team (CNT), arrived on scene and began speaking with this man in crisis, employing his de-escalation techniques.

After about 15 minutes, the CNT Officer was able to convince him to drop the sharp object still in his hand so that we could get him the medical attention he needed. He was taken into custody safely with no further injuries to himself and no injuries to our officers.

A situation like this is extremely stressful on everyone at the scene. Officers must remain calm but alert to adapt to changes at a moments notice.

Gas and food Prices have affected more peoples mental health.

No one is slicing their neck over gas and food prices. Not yet, at least.

@Anonymous

How do you know? Are you inside this man’s head? You have no idea how this has affected other beyond yourself or loved ones. Aunt Barbara has an excellent point why dismiss it?

If he had a car that uses super I’ll bet he’d have cut it for real.

I wonder if it was the same guy I encountered at Walgreen’s Pharmacy earlier in the day. I was sitting filling out paperwork for my COVID booster, when he came to that corner, shouting about the FBI and needing to get home to work on his book. I looked up from my paperwork and he started calling me names, shouting at me. I got up slowly, went to the front of the store, and asked a clerk to call the police. When the police arrived, I heard the officer call the man by name and say, “[name] you’re scaring people.” I assume now that he’s the local schizophrenic. How sad.

@Dr Jellyfinger…. Thought you may say something along those lines.

Dr Jellyfinger April 7, 2022 - 7:59 PM - 7:59 PM

This is all just pointless speculation….
It could be that Popeye’s just ran out of red beans & rice and that pushed him over the edge….
Nothing is cut-and- dried here so why don’t we all just wait for further details instead of simply taking a stab at what actually happened?

nytemuvr April 9, 2022 - 8:43 AM - 8:43 AM

@Dr Jellyfinger….I heard that it was fried okra they ran out of, not RB&R.

Dr Jellyfinger April 9, 2022 - 10:10 AM - 10:10 AM

Yuck… I don’t eat okra because it’s slimy, like eating a slug.
Popeye’s red beans & rice isn’t very traditional, but still, it’s very good.
Anyone who’d be that upset over no okra must be nuts.

My sister and her son were getting gas at the Arco in front of Popeyes when my nephew saw this person cutting himself. He lunged at my nephew as he walked past him and my nephew ran to their car. They locked themselves in and called 911. The police closed off the area and they couldn’t leave the area until the situation had ended. Im glad the officer was able to deescalate the situation quickly and that he didn’t hurt anyone else, especially my nephew.
