Walnut Creek City Council To Discuss Expanding Marijuana Sales

by CLAYCORD.com
37 comments

The Walnut Creek City Council will decide tonight whether to allow expanded cannabis sales within city limits.

The city currently allows up to two delivery services for medical cannabis, though there’s only one currently operating in the city.

The council will decide whether to expand its ordinance to include non-medical delivery services and, if so, how many to allow.

Council members said in October they wanted to allow recreational adult-use cannabis sales, at least as far as delivery, but held off taking up the issue of storefront sales within city limits.

Members said they were open to storefront sales but wanted to push it back until this year, as they’d already prioritized staff time working on downtown recovery from COVID-19 shutdowns. All five council members agreed in October the city shouldn’t allow commercial cultivation or preparation of cannabis within the city.

The Walnut Creek City Council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the council chamber at city hall, 1666 Main Street, Walnut Creek. The meeting can also be seen at https://www.youtube.com/user/CityofWalnutCreek.

Whos’ money is pushing this? Don’t we have enough problems without adding another.

+1 … if it could bring in revenue to the city – they won’t stop it

Spoiler alert – delivery services already service your area. They are licensed through different cities (Oakland, SF, San Jose, hell…even Martinez)

You want to “control” this….have common sense/practical rules in place. Don’t be greedy on taxes, and actually work with the businesses who want to come in. Most cities are looking for the biggest handout and then approve the license for businesses based out of other areas. Invest in a team who is based in the area and has roots. Those that are invested in WC and Contra Costa County will actually care about how they do the job. businesses who started from Oakland, Los Angeles, Desert Hot Springs, or Eureka won’t

Rick Flair April 19, 2022 - 11:06 AM - 11:06 AM

Just watch the quality of people these storefronts are going to attract. Then they’ll ask, why is crime increasing? Concord and Walnut Creek council members have no foresight or critical thinking skills.

Take it how you want it, but contributing members of society with morals, values, and principles don’t smoke weed.

Snakekeeper April 19, 2022 - 2:34 PM - 2:34 PM

The quality of people going to a pot shop is no worse than the quality of people going to liquor store.
Liquor good
Pot bad
Not really!

Lamorinda Larry April 19, 2022 - 6:07 PM - 6:07 PM

@Rick Flair – Plenty of moral, principled contributing citizens indulge in cannabis. That said, the delivery model is vastly superior to store front dispensaries. There’s far less crime around the wine.com warehouse or BevMo (which closes by 9 or 10) than outside of corner bodegas that sell 40 oz bottles and stay open past midnight. Same logic applies to cannabis.

Plenty of outfits deliver to WC and the more affluent neighboring communities, and countless professionals discreetly enjoy in moderation a behind their gates and hedges. Better to facilitate use of mind altering substances in the safety and privacy of home than in stores to which customers drive or walk and linger outside.

WC April 19, 2022 - 11:16 AM - 11:16 AM

Out City prostitutes will do anything for money.

Lamorinda Larry April 19, 2022 - 5:56 PM - 5:56 PM

@WC – Unfortunately, no prostitutes …. YET.

One of these days, hopefully.

Chris April 19, 2022 - 11:17 AM - 11:17 AM

Just wait until pot shops out number Starbucks. The new Antioch.

BORbeliever April 19, 2022 - 11:20 AM - 11:20 AM

Forget restaurants and fancy stores, I think the WC city council should try to make WC the cannabis capital of Northern California. How special would that be?

Aunt Barbara April 19, 2022 - 11:40 AM - 11:40 AM

unbelievable!
Add more accidents and driving under the influence and people zoned out at work and on the road..

redrazor April 19, 2022 - 12:19 PM - 12:19 PM

+1 They’re just asking for more problems and crime!!??!! IDIOTS!

Zachary April 19, 2022 - 1:01 PM - 1:01 PM

We have had legal marijuana for a while now. Have you really noticed any difference? I’d rather have pothead neighbors than drunks.

Captain Bebops April 19, 2022 - 1:50 PM - 1:50 PM

Exactly. Of course any recreational drug can be abused. I recall for the years before it marijuana was legalized there was even quite a few conservatives who advocated it’s legalization. Or is it because people are too stoned to go out and protest government overreach? Didn’t seem to stop us back in the late 60s to early 70s.

Rollo Tomasi April 20, 2022 - 2:29 PM - 2:29 PM

“I’d rather have pothead neighbors than drunks.”
Are those the only two choices?

billa April 19, 2022 - 2:20 PM - 2:20 PM

DUMB DUMB DUMB, the city officials have already destroyed what once was a quaint. lovely community by allowing the idiots from over the hill to infiltrate and bring their left leaning agenda. They got tired of what they did to communities like Berkeley and came thru the tunnel and are working to destroy our community. We don’t need any more pot heads running around town.

Anonymous April 19, 2022 - 3:37 PM - 3:37 PM

1975 calling: “Decriminalize marijuana and tax it. It’s a win-win situation.”

So, it was decriminalized. And as predicted, cities taxed it to death and now illegal weed sales are greater than ever because illegal weed is cheaper.

And word is the big pot farms are selling to both sides.

jose April 19, 2022 - 5:30 PM - 5:30 PM

That second hand smoke will kill you………remember?

Cowellian April 19, 2022 - 5:47 PM - 5:47 PM

Facts don’t care if you like them or not, but the fact is that marijuana is still illegal in the United States, even though California likes to pretend otherwise.

Concord74 April 19, 2022 - 5:52 PM - 5:52 PM

WNCK will become the Bezerkly of Central CC!

It became that way when the gutless and pandering to the left council members came into existence in the late 90’s, early 2000’s! Lots of luck ‘Creekers!

Dr Jellyfinger April 19, 2022 - 8:13 PM - 8:13 PM

If you build it they will come…dope smokers, that is.

You know the difference is that not all people who drink alcohol get drunk…having a couple beers after work or a glass of wine with dinner does not necessarily make you drunk & getting drunk is not always a drinkers intent….. However, when you spark up a doobie you are doing that with the sole intent of getting high. It doesn’t taste good, that isn’t a reason to smoke it…. you just wanna get high…. so please quit comparing dope to alcohol.

Snakekeeper April 19, 2022 - 9:19 PM - 9:19 PM

Jellyfinger you don’t know what you are talking about. Just because you spark one up doesn’t mean you have to smoke the whole thing. Just like beer you don’t have to drink the whole sixer!

Dr Jellyfinger April 20, 2022 - 7:24 AM - 7:24 AM

Snakekeeper….You are doing it to get high.
You aren’t quenching thirst or having a beverage as is natural, you are smoking a drug to get high, period.
Being unable to admit it is your drug addled inability to understand it.
You are smoking that stinky, mind dulling crap that makes you cough & gag to get into a stupid state of mind that makes you giggle like Kamala Harris at everything.
It isn’t a fine tobacco, it’s dope.

Dr Jellyfinger April 20, 2022 - 7:41 AM - 7:41 AM

I should clarify that I am not referring (no pun intended) to medically prescribed marijuana.

I should also explain that when I was young and stupid I did smoke that crap often with my dope smoking friends, so I’m not unfamiliar with it…. we were getting stoned.

Snakekeeper April 20, 2022 - 8:46 AM - 8:46 AM

So you don’t drink to relax or unwind. My point is pot is NO WORSE than alcohol.
All drugs are bad when abused.

Dr Jellyfinger April 20, 2022 - 5:56 PM - 5:56 PM

Beer won’t give you lung cancer and buying beer does not support drug cartels… but why should you guys care?
Go ahead & smoke up pot heads… be mellow….no worries right?

Snakekeeper April 20, 2022 - 9:10 PM - 9:10 PM

I keep forgetting how good alcohol is for your liver.

Concerned Citizen April 19, 2022 - 7:41 PM - 7:41 PM

Another government plot to get rich, along with liquor stores, bars, coffee shops, and fast food places.

Concerned Citizen April 19, 2022 - 7:46 PM - 7:46 PM

*Another government plot to get rich off people’s weaknesses or addictions or “insert progressive term here”

“Well it can’t be bad anymore if it’s legal now”

Concerned Citizen April 19, 2022 - 10:06 PM - 10:06 PM

@dr jellyfinger

Justifying the use of one substance over another leads to one thing and one thing only.

Suffering.

Dr Jellyfinger April 20, 2022 - 7:51 AM - 7:51 AM

I wasn’t justifying anything.
I was clarifying the differences between “use” “abuse” & intent.

Concerned Citizen April 20, 2022 - 11:33 AM - 11:33 AM

All of which lead to suffering still.

Dr Jellyfinger April 20, 2022 - 8:12 PM - 8:12 PM

The worst I actually had was a bit of indigestion the other night….3 beers might have been the culprit but it could have been the tacos too.

I wouldn’t call it “suffering” tho.

Vindex April 20, 2022 - 7:52 AM - 7:52 AM

What good comes from this?

ON DA April 20, 2022 - 10:00 AM - 10:00 AM

Hey GOOFBALLS you weren’t elected to distribute or pander. Schedule #1 Controlled substances. Clear ???
