BOB September 13, 2022 - 12:41 PM - 12:41 PM

We have Comcast and I had to reset the Wi-Fi twice while trying to do this response. The service is so bad we are lucky to see anything.

usually Fox Business, TvLand (Everybody Loves Raymond), and around holidays, Food Network, all as background more than actually watching.

My guess would be kind considerate people that can afford a little extra for what they want. Have a wonderful day.

“The French Chef” channel on Pluto is very entertaining. There is a whole channel devoted to Julie Child, but “The French Chef” episodes are my favorites.

I used to watch her on PBS in the 60s or 70s and hadn’t noticed that she would sweep every thing off the counter onto the floor with her hand when she moved from one dish to another. Must have been a mess to clean up afterwards.

Or, that she poured salt into her hand to measure it, sometimes saying what looked like a tablespoon of salt was actually more like two tablespoons. In fact, she rarely measured anything and always left half the contents she had mixed up completely unused in the bowl then she was all done. Some of her dishes looked like slop by the time it made it to the table.

Just can’t stand though to watch her carve up a raw chicken or pat a dead baby pig on the butt. Actually “hurts my feelings.” I compare those old episodes to “America”s Test Kitchen” where the cooks are so precise they sometimes get out a ruler or a scale to measure the ingredients and their work surfaces are positively immaculate. Worlds apart.

Justifiable languor September 13, 2022 - 5:06 PM - 5:06 PM

Funny you should say that. We were watching Julia’s first shows last night. We laughed while she schlepped ingredients, missing the pan and globbing butter and cream onto potatoes.

Though I will say, there might have been a garbage pail in the vicinity where she flung the counter crumbs. We tried to guess which country she was from. Pasadena, Ca. Then Massachusetts. Home girl.

Gittyup September 16, 2022 - 7:54 AM - 7:54 AM

@Justifiable languor. I noticed that, too. Julia was definitely in the “Butter makes it better” school of thought. Measure butter? Not a chance!

I’ve had many streaming services over the years (cut the cable in 2013). But due to the “pandemic” some of them had stale content or not enough keep the subscription. You might think they might give a discount in that case but NO they actually raised fees maybe because now the execs wanted better pay so they could build a fancy doomsday bunker.

I don’t have any particular favorite of the services I’ve kept. Like many I have Amazon Prime and watch a lot of shows there. I have Comcast for Internet (I use an Ethernet connection to the “gateway”) and watch a few shows and movies on Peacock with ads with are sparse. I also have AppleTV+ and Shudder because they are both inexpensive and have some good content.

Good for you. I too have cut way down on TV time and consequentlty have accomplished many things I would not have otherwise done, like reading Atlas Shrugged, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

If you watch anything watch Tucker Carlson on Fox at 5pm. Unless you don’t care about what is going on in politics and the country. Beyond a doubt the best show on TV for those subjects.
