Bay Area transportation officials want to hear from the public about ways to fix congested freeways. One of the options they’re considering: Turning those freeways into tollways, and charging drivers by the mile. KTVU’s Allie Rasmus reports. (above)

To watch tonight’s webinar, “The Future Of Freeways,” which is hosted by the Bay Area’s Metropolitan Transportation Commission, please click on this link. The webinar runs from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

I thought we already did by paying the gas tax …

And the Bridge Tolls

And the Rich Lanes, *car pool* lanes …

Pay by the mile to get better freeways. They are getting desperate. I think we are doing that already with the gas tax. Which reminds me of what they will do when everyone is driving an electric car.

RICARDOH ~ OOPS
From what I heard on the video, there was no mention of better freeway, just to fix congested freeways.
I know 3 people who do delivery driving for a living, and one of them transport Lab work for Hospitals.
If you rack up 70,000 miles a year, mostly freeway driving, HOLY COW!

Roz relieving congestion is the same as better freeways the last time I looked. From what I remember we already went through this with little results.

Captain Bebops November 29, 2022 - 2:03 PM - 2:03 PM

They could have a thing called a “pandemic” and lockdown everyone. That would eliminate freeway congestion. 🤣

But aren’t we and haven’t we been paying enough in gas taxes at the pump? Adding a mileage tax on top of things would be a bit much.

Wage Slave November 29, 2022 - 2:03 PM - 2:03 PM

California, run by compassionate progressive liberals. Democrats are for the little guy, progressive taxes, a level playing field.

Also, if you want to get to work, you’re gonna have to pay the world’s most regressive flat tax. Would be a shame if you couldn’t make a living… nice job, wouldn’t want anything to happen to it… it’s just a coincidence that this policy would track you every where you go outside your home, we’d never use that information for anything else, swearsies!

NO way
This is highway robbery.

Jules November 29, 2022 - 3:03 PM - 3:03 PM

Freeway- an archaic term once used to describe the expansive system of roadways in California. The system became overused because government leaders failed to recognize that the planet can support only so many humans and continued to allow the population to expand exponentially. The same problem occurred with housing, energy, and water supplies. Most ecologically minded citizens are waiting for the inevitable crash. It will be ugly.

Rollo Tomasi November 29, 2022 - 3:29 PM - 3:29 PM

@Jules – is it me, or did you just bemoan the fact that government leaders don’t control population? If so, I don’t want to share a planet with someone like you, let alone a country.

SAM November 29, 2022 - 5:31 PM - 5:31 PM

Lie. The whole world’s population would fit in baja california. You globalist propagandized useful idiots keep acting like there’s to many people because the elite want to kill us off. You have no idea what you’re talking about. Our population has increased around here from mexico. Look who’s on the freeway in traffic. Look who is everywhere, 80% hispanic. The president says it’s our fault for population decline. That why immigration is welcome. And in the next breath they tell you we are overpopulated. Just another scam. We already paid for the roads. This government is illegitimate as can be.
I knew your post was going there just by your previous posts. You’re such a good lap dog for the WEF. We see you

Captain Bebops November 30, 2022 - 10:31 AM - 10:31 AM

But I don’t think you’d like to live in Baja California that populated or Texas for that matter (another area which pops up with this argument). Yeah, population increase does seem to be the result of immigration as studies show a decline amongst the natives here. Perhaps a sign at the border saying “welcome to your new country. Same problems as the one you left.” Many of the countries people are fleeing are run by tyrants under the influence of the US.

Of course the cruel and harsh thing to do is reduce the population through bioweapons.

nytemuvr November 29, 2022 - 9:10 PM - 9:10 PM

Do liberal “open border” people view the 3 million or so people illegally crossing the border this year as only about 1% of the total US population?…3 million (approximately for this year) divided by 330 million population. That less than 1% is a pretty big draw on resources for the other 330 million, are they not?

Bill Cutting November 29, 2022 - 3:20 PM - 3:20 PM

Hell no to this and I say whom ever is writing this bill and scheming to milk the citizens needs a swift boot to the rear outta the USA! The right to travel is a far-reaching and essential privilege and immunity of citizenship in a broad federal union. It is guaranteed explicitly in Article IV of the Articles of Confederation and thus implicitly in Article IV of the United States Constitution and the Fourteenth Amendment. Get rid of the toll lanes!

Sounds like a scheme to raise more tax money for the parasitic government where we pay more but without any benefit. It also as pointed out above is a good step toward monitoring us better at the individual level. Looking forward to a letter someday asking me to explain to the authorities why I went somewhere in a car when there was public transit available.

Ah yess, another SOLUTION . . . .
.
Prediction, employees will demand to work from home thereby reducing gasoline tax revenues.
Will this incentivize companies to locate outside CA.?
.
Remember the great idea, eliminate toll takers ? Gave us people sanding off reflective paint on license plates, plastic covers over plates. How much money per year is lost thru driver fraud?
.
Will it incentivize drivers to get off freeways and use city streets ? ? ?

Original G November 29, 2022 - 6:24 PM - 6:24 PM

.”Will it incentivize drivers to get off freeways and use city streets ? ? ?”.

Oh, please November 30, 2022 - 5:32 PM - 5:32 PM

That is what they do now. All the people in Pittsburg and Brentwood congest the 4 freeway AND all the side streets trying to go around. THEY should very much be taxed extra for all this damage.

Dawg November 29, 2022 - 4:58 PM - 4:58 PM

The Libs answer to congestion is to add more housing around transit centers. Yep, that’l work. People will jump at the chance to sell their homes, and move to be near a transit center. Which, by the way, will be selling at a premium that most people cannot afford. But don’t worry, the money they save by using public transportation will offset the cost. And, the home they just sold will be occupied by another family that will need to commute to work, adding more traffic to the congestion they want to fix.

Tax by the miles driven has been off and on for some time now here in California. They have toll roads back east that do that. And they time you as well by issuing a time ticket. You can stop for an X amount of time for a brake. Go over the time limit then you pay extra at the exit.

There are some in SoCal already. I visited one of my sons a few years back and he had to pay a quarter to use a certain bridge in the town he lived in. I don’t remember if it was in both directions or just in one.

Texas has had toll roads for many many years. Remember Claycordians, Texas isn’t run by the “Libs”. The same old complaints about anyone other than right wingers are getting old and tired!🙄

SAM November 29, 2022 - 5:36 PM - 5:36 PM

This government is illegitimate. The California government is socialist, boarder line communist. They are out of money after the slick haired greaseball LIED to you about a surplus to get the vote. He took your freedoms during COVIC HOAX and made you give your tax dollars to prisoners on unemployment. A tax revolution is the only answer. How is it some of you still won’t get it.

AngryAmerican November 29, 2022 - 5:52 PM - 5:52 PM

Don’t we already pay a gas tax to fix the roads???? Oh yeah governor grease ball put that in the general fund so he could spend on stupid things. Could you at least cut the weeds along side the freeway?

Jeff (the other one) November 29, 2022 - 7:12 PM - 7:12 PM

emboldened by all the mandating they did during covid, I would not be surprised if this becomes effective within the next 2 years. The challenge will be out of state cars, but I am sure they will figure some way to extract money from visiting drivers. Gotta cut into that projected deficit for 2023, and having driven away a fair number of high earners with the already high income tax levels, this may be the only option. Funny how we had a $100 billion surplus in 2022, meaning FTB extracted an extra $100 billion from we producers, and now we’ll have a $25 billion deficit in 2023. newsom and the legislature sure do love to spend our money, foolishly.

Ancient Mariner November 29, 2022 - 7:55 PM - 7:55 PM

Joe November 29, 2022 - 8:49 PM - 8:49 PM

Let’s get the Gas Tax money out of the GENERAL FUND and in to a bucket we can see.
Only with such accountability will we ever know where our money really is being spent.

It’s too easy to underfund roads, make it a pain point, and hold out your hand for more money!

Gittyup November 29, 2022 - 9:40 PM - 9:40 PM

What happened to the billions in surplus Newsom had when he entered office? Obviously, he didn’t spend it on freeway planning.for the “migration” … which he has enthusiastically encouraged, I might add. Driving “has consequences.”

Chris November 29, 2022 - 10:19 PM - 10:19 PM

Just another money grab the good Liberals will think it’s a great idea and support it blindly.

Night worker November 30, 2022 - 6:12 AM - 6:12 AM

One way to thin out the traffic is have more companies start working people on Saturdays and Sundays and if the employees don’t care for that, put them working at night time.
Works for a lot of people.

I’m a fairly liberal local, and I love transit and definitely try to use it as much as possible, but even I think this is a TERRIBLE idea. It will only accomplish two things: 1) Make surface streets even more crowded and dangerous for pedestrians (especially schools on major roads), and 2) piss off a bunch of people. Also, because it is a toll-based disincentive, it will only serve to take working class people off the roads, not the wealthier commuters, who will simply pay the toll while the rest of us have to tighten our purse strings even more than we already have with this out of control inflation and corporate greed.

I commute 30 minutes by car from San Leandro to Concord every work day, but if I take BART it costs more and takes 70-90 minutes. This plan will simply make my commute more difficult no matter what. I hate this kind of overreach and poorly-planned, short-sighted policy making.

Danged ineffectual December 1, 2022 - 8:52 AM - 8:52 AM

God forbid we get better public transportation routes.
