Concord Councilmember Dominic Aliano To Work For State Senator Steve Glazer

Concord City Councilmember Dominic Aliano has been hired as the new district coordinator for state Sen. Steve Glazer, D-Orinda, Glazer’s office said in a statement Wednesday.

“I’m excited to bring Dominic on board to lead our district office,” Senator Glazer said. “Dominic has a strong background in delivering on the needs of local constituents. And he brings a personal history to my senate district, having been raised in Concord and serving their residents on the city council.”

Glazer’s spokesperson Steven Harmon said Aliano’s new job won’t affect his position on the Concord council. Aliano won re-election for his District 3 City Council seat in November after running unopposed. He’ll work out of Glazer’s office in Orinda.
Aliano begins his new day job next Monday. He’ll replace George Escutia, who worked for Glazer since 2015 and spent the past three years as district director.

Aliano has been district representative for two Contra Costa County supervisors: Karen Mitchoff and Federal Glover. His responsibilities included economic development, sustainability, environmental health and zoning and code enforcement.

Aliano has been on the Concord City Council since 2018 and was mayor in 2022. He’s also served on the board of directors for the Monument Crisis Center, Todos Santos Business Association and Support4Recovery. He was also a Concord planning commissioner before joining the council.

Aliano graduated in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in political science from Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington, after attending De La Salle High School in Concord.

Glazer’s state Senate district includes Dublin, Livermore, Pleasanton, Antioch, Brentwood, Clayton, Concord, Danville, Lafayette, Martinez, Moraga, Oakley, Orinda, Pittsburg, Pleasant Hill, San Ramon, and Walnut Creek.

This is some real BS conflict of interest. Aliano should decide if he wants to work for politicians or be one. Enough with all the insider trading in Concord. And FU Senator Glazer for thinking this is appropriate.

Congratulations to Dominic. Sounds like he has a strong base of experience and is well suited for this job.

I think all our city council members with the exception of Laura Hoffmeister who recently retired have full time jobs.

@ Mike McDermott
It’s a conflict of interest for the city councilmembers to be working in PAID positions for higher elected officers. Next time you complain about how inefficient Concord is run – think about what you are endorsing.

It definitely is a conflict of interest….regardless of what they claim.

Hope
Technically it is not a conflict of interest but in my opinion it is ethically.
Lara DeLaney in Martinez has held a top analyst position in the county CAO’s office for almost 30 years while serving on the Martinez city council. Karen Mitchoff was an EHSD analyst while serving on the PH city council. So legally there is no issue. But I do see an ethical issue.
FYI- there were 2 commissions Edi thought I would be great for but since I was a Public Health accountant for the county I couldn’t serve as some on the council said it was “a conflict of interest”. These were unpaid seats, go figure

Thank you for this info. However, I do believe Aliano’s employment with Glazer can be differentiated in this case. Aliano is not just an employee of Glazer’s office. He is leading the senator’s district office – a position that requires and id defined by acting in the interest of the Senator and on behalf of the Senator, not merely doing a task such as analysis or research.

Adding, for example, Senator Glazer does not support rent control. Aliano represents a district where rent control is very much at issue. Glazer does not support local control of building, including density and height. Concord wants local control. Concord is not required to start guessing which interest Aliano is advocating – his paid position to represent on behalf of the Senator or his elected position on behalf of his constituents. That is the intent of conflict of interest rules. He needs to step down from the council or end his commitment to representing Senator Glazer to the public. No way can he do both. It is a direct and doumentable conflict.

Aliano is now officially a representative for Senator Glazer – a paid one at that. His ability to fairly represent Concord residents is compromised.

“His responsibilities included economic development, sustainability…”
.
Perhaps FIRST thing should be stemming the exodus from CA by it’s citizens and businesses.
For example steel mill in Pittsburg slated to close end of 2023. Means permanent loss of 600 living wage UNION jobs. Fleecing of deep pockets seems to be the in thing for DEMs. $8 million fine by state then county $4 million.
.
For businesses to stay in business there must be regulatory certainty and political stability,
neither of which have existed in CA for decades. Nationally known steel company, so far, is selling the land and the world class and PROFITABLE steel mill will be scrapped after 110 YEARS.
For each of those 600 jobs lost another 5 to 10 people working for companies providing goods or services to steel plant will be effected. May have their hours cut or be laid off.
.
State legislature is in dire need of ADULT SUPERVISION.

Has State Senator Steve Glazer put out a public statement on loss of 600 living wage UNION jobs ? ?

Congratulations to Dominic and Steve. I am so happy to see Dominic staying involved in local politics. I have known him since he started working for Karen’s office. I have found him to have great balance for caring for people and at the same time being fiscally responsible.

Not surprising you are happy Aliano is staying in Concord since it is my understanding you do not live in Concord. Maybe you can find a place for him to do Glazer’s bidding in whatever city you do live in so it is actually “local” to you. This is an example of exactly why Aliano representing Glazer is a conflict. This is a real estate investor who thinks it’s great to have access to these two votes in combo with each other.
