Contra Costa Health (CCH) is seeking “dedicated and passionate” individuals to join a new Gun Violence Prevention Coalition to support the County’s efforts to reduce gun violence.

Coalition members will be asked to support the following activities: Research and planning efforts to address root causes of gun violence in Contra Costa; development of an evidence-based Gun Violence Prevention Strategic Plan; development of a final report that will include a gun violence prevention sustainability plan for areas of Contra Costa most impacted by gun violence, and coordinate and collaborate with other violence prevention efforts in the county.

The Coalition will be a diverse, community and multi-agency-driven collaborative, according to the Contra Costa County Health Department.

They are currently seeking applications from representatives of community-based organizations, law enforcement agencies, other health-centered and faith-based organizations, and those who were “formerly incarcerated and justice-involved,” the Health Department said.

To apply for the GVPC, please go to: http://tiny.cc/CCGVPC and submit your responses no later than Friday, February 24, 2023, by 5 p.m.

A coalition to end gun violence. A nice thought but I hope it isn’t costing anything. Once you let the gorilla out of the cage it isn’t easy to put him back in it. Not long ago it wasn’t like this.

I’ll give them a tip for free. The best we can do to reduce gun violence is to put violent felons in prison.

@Borbeliever
Man, someone sure put a lot of buzzwords together, and your response is 100% correct. Just lock up the bad guys…….it’s not that hard.

“Narcs!!! We don’t need your hate crimes! HATE CRIMES!”

Exit 12A February 12, 2023 - 12:08 PM - 12:08 PM

.
How about reducing the number of criminals who are let off with light or no sentences?
.
The local media recently exclaimed the proliferation of illegal “ghost” guns. Well, that is proof that the criminal element can and will obtain illegal firearms no matter how restrictive gun laws become in California.
.
FIGHT CRIME. SHOOT BACK!!

This is a go nowhere Newsom inspired idea..and is headed by the CCC health department?
This will follow right online as past ideas like schools are gun free zones (that’s working well), no large round magazines allowed in Ca (another working well idea) and many others…
Maybe this new coalition can put their heads together and totally outlaw ammunition yeah that’ll work let’s try that next..
Did you catch the type of applications there’re wanting to get..
Yikes…this is a joke..must be

Try locking up criminals. (Something that will elude all of them).

Who needs a committee?

The solutions to the problems are self-evident.

A committee will cost money, imagining solutions that cost money, using taxpayer money, and not solving any of the problems.

And why the Health Department? Those people need to return to their oblivion of pre-pandemic days.
Beurocrates hate to relinquish power over the people.

This will create another bottomless pit for taxpayer dollars and not resolve any real issues other than further infringe upon the rights of law-abiding and responsible American Citizens.

I think everybody here agrees on the light prosecution and sentencing perps are getting – so – we / everybody / citizens give the county officials or whoever the feedback on stiffer sentencing, no bail waiving, etc. -what do we think they will do? nothing ….. because it is against their political gain or careers – so the real action would be to remove the lack of incumbent leadership, do we think that will happen anytime soon? Probably not … it will take voting them out … will any of the sitting county leaders agree with that?

As a lifelong member of the NRA do you think I would have a chance to be accepted as a coalition member?

I’ll vote for you…. and probably most of the folks in the forum!

Let’s try enforcing the existing laws and holding criminals accountable for their crimes as a first step. Easy Peasy…

.. sounds easy – but will it happen? … too politically sensitive for “leadership” to touch – the “third rail” of their career life

WHY limit it only to gun violence ? ?
.
Believe fists, hammers, baseball bats, etc. account for more injuries and deaths than firearms.
.
How about destigmatizing mental health ? ? ?
Crisis hot lines, conflict resolution, deescalation . . . . .
Does county and educational system do anything to counter gaming and media violence.
Youth of today should be taught safe firearms handling, etc.
Still have my jacket with patches from Mt Diablo YMCA shooting program.
My Great Grandson will wear it when he grows into it.
My kids were taught gun SAFETY at an early age and they were taught how to shoot accurately. (50 yards)
.
Instead those in power want you to be afraid of firearms, telling you they are to blame for violence plaguing our society in an attempt to distract from their failures. Hoping if they keep you focused on inanimate objects, you’ll not hold them account for their failures.
.
Too bad CoCo county isn’t setting an example, taking the lead in destigmatizing mental health . . . . .
.
IT’S OK TO ASK FOR HELP

Addressing mental health doesn’t pay political dividends.
And that’s sad as it’s tied to a significant percentage of homeless people.

JWB February 12, 2023 - 7:40 PM - 7:40 PM

@OG you’re quite obviously not as much a firearm expert as may think you are. According to the FBI over 70% of all homicides in the US are committed by firearms. So much for your believe that fists, baseball bats, hammers etc. account for more deaths in the US as firearms.

Original G February 12, 2023 - 9:22 PM - 9:22 PM

Looking at FBI tables 8, 11 appears you are correct.
.
Perhaps DEMs are going about this gun thing all wrong, should think about approaching by race.
Say for example in chicago.

chicago 2022 Race of Victim/Assailant, 77.4% black, 17.9% hispanic, 4.7% white or other.
chicago 2023 Race of Victim/Assailant, 80.0% black, 17.8% hispanic, 2.2% white or other.

But come election time, being black in chicago . . . . .

@OG – while you were mistaken about the details of gun crimes, you were on the right track. You know those scary black rifles that the hand wringers are constantly up in arms about? Murders committed by hands, feet and other weapons FAR outnumber murders committed with long guns, including shotguns. But we’ve got to get rid of those nasty, fully semi-automatic, 30 round clip weapons of war, don’t we?

Let’s do an expensive study and limit it to people who already suppose to know what to do. Come up with the same round of ideas that have brought up several times already. Then have some judge shoot it down (pun intended).

If health was better I’d sign up just to see extend of liberal brainwashing of the masses.
Then see what rational common sense does to their blood pressure.
.
Would also mention at length propaganda for passage, AB-109, Props 47, 57, 64 and what actually has happened. Pot is now big money maker for gangs and they defend their sales area with guns.

I competed my, Violence Prevention Coalition Application Questionnaire. Lets see if I get called for an interview.

WC February 13, 2023 - 10:36 AM - 10:36 AM

I completed it, too. I doubt I will be picked. No, it doesn’t ask about your race or ethnic background. People who are tired of the pro-crime and anti-gun crowd should apply en masse. That’s how you stop the problem.

burnbabyburn February 12, 2023 - 4:46 PM - 4:46 PM

Tax-paying, law-abiding citizens need not apply.

Did i read this correctly ? Do they really seek out people whose judgement is so bad that they have been incarcerated?

Who thinks of this stuff?

blm, come on in!

Martinezmike February 12, 2023 - 7:00 PM - 7:00 PM

I support the Paul Pelosi coalition against hammer violence. Whether you are Porsche, or getting hammered at home.

The Fearless Spectator February 12, 2023 - 7:51 PM - 7:51 PM

How about this: “Stop criminal violence, which is sometimes committed with a firearm. The surgeon general has determined criminal gun violence is more likely to send someone to the hospital than hate speech.”
I can hear the hyperventilating now……..

Bad Karma February 12, 2023 - 11:37 PM - 11:37 PM

I am OFFENDED by their incessant use of their manufactured terminology, “Gun Violence”. This is a lie. If they were truthful, it would actually be, (stop) “Private Gun Ownership”, since that’s their real agenda. Those terms are interchangeable. It’s nothing more than unfettered sycophantic PREJUDICE, against law abiding gun owners. These BIGOTS are repeatedly guilty of DISCRIMINATING against people and businesses, that don’t align with their political religion. They should be required to provide a SAFE SPACE (per their own rules) for all who have feelings against them. And for the record, I IDENTIFY as a “HPLDPP – High Precision Long Distance Paper Puncher” and my PRONOUNS are “United States Citizen / Bullseye”.

Why not give law abiding citizens the ability to train with and carry firearms? Criminals love unarmed victims and soft targets.

Still waiting for a response. For my application Crickets
