Tucker’s quotes are old news. I’ve watched his show since its inception and I’ve never once heard him say that he liked Trump. In fact, a few years ago he said something to the effect that he didn’t think Trump should be president. So what? Tucker is entitled to his opinion. With Tucker, it’s not about liking someone, it’s about fairness. Your post reads like someone who has never seen his show more than once, if ever.
Since I don’t have cable or satellite I don’t really watch Tucker. I’ve seen some of his clips on the Fox News website. Funny how you have this ideal view of what a Trump voter watches, believes in and is upset about. As I recall from years ago when I did have satellite, CNN shoveled at its viewers this bigoted false picture that the only people who support Trump are uneducated, rural voters like Clem Kadiddlehopper. Are you one of their 7 or 8 remaining viewers?

JWB: if you are starved for news then, the Federal Reserve just announced they will keep increasing interest rates to fight what you call Putin’s inflation. I’m not sure why Putin will lower our inflation rates because of what our Federal Reserve does, but I’m sure you have that all sorted out.

Real hourly earnings are falling, down almost 2 percent from a year ago, each dollar you have in savings is now only worth 85 cents compared to when Biden took office, huge deficits risking a currency crisis, promises of increased taxes on corporations hitting them as interest rates rise and risking recession, housing unaffordability increasing especially hitting those with less income, and so on. By the way, did you know the Fed Chairman does not have a PhD in economics and his professional progress was based on political connections.
The cause of inflation is the creation of too much money. That’s irrefutable. Our current administration is monetarily irresponsible. That’s irrefutable.
Powell’s strategy so far has only slightly accomplished it’s goal. Forecasting errors certainly haven’t helped. IMHO he needs to choose his words a little more carefully; his comments yesterday make this quite clear. Rate hikes aside, efforts to stabilize capital markets will help everyone. It trickles down.
We are so lucky we don’t need to depend on the PhD less Powell and can get our information from the geniuses here on this blog.

So you are trying the Latvian defense? Sounds like something in chess. Inflation is a general price level issue and in the same way the price of eggs or San Francisco houses may seem out of alignment with Detroit, there are reasons for localized differences. Employment and opportunities are very different between here and Detroit while monetary policy deals with the average of prices across the US or Europe. But I’ve got to remember this Latvian defense thingy and spring it on someone at a good time.
Of course you could have said this shorter: the cause of inflation is complex having many factors with monetary policy being one if them but by far not the only one.

Things at Silicon Valley Bank have gotten so bad that the govt has closed the bank and taken control. Depositors will receive their funds, up to FDIC limits ($250,000) by no later than Monday. Deposits above $250k will be received by…….who knows? This could create a ripple effect felt across the banking sector and across the economy.
SVB (now called -I think- The California Bank of Santa Clara) is not a tiny entity. It is the 18th largest bank in the US. The causes of this mess are numerous, but the final straw was the bank being forced to mark-to-market their Treasury holdings down, thereby destroying the bank’s balance sheet. This caused a multi billion hole that SVB tried to plug by selling almost $2 billion in their common stock. That effort failed and the bank was closed and taken over by the govt.
This is eerily similar to what happened to Bear Stearns way back in 2008. It is even happening at the same time as the Bear Stearns meltdown. And we all should know what happened then. The whole mark to market fiasco was their final straw. In fact, the market did not bottom until Mar 2009. Coincidently, the bottom of the market in 2009 happened on the same day that the old MTM rules were put back into place.
This is a complicated issue and to really adequately explain what’s taking place would take me hours to type out the explanations. And neither I want to spend that much time, nor does the Mayor want me to clog up his servers.
So what do you do to protect yourself if you maintain balances over $250k? It’s pretty easy. Move some of your cash to a different bank or purchase CDs that are federally insured to $250k or T-bills that are guaranteed by Uncle Sam. You’ll earn over 5% on your $ for terms as short at 6 months. Talk to your financial professionals for ideas. Just remember, having $250k cash in bank ABC and buying a $250k CD issued by bank ABC does not increase your FCIC protection to $500k. You have to split your $ into multiple banks.
This is a complicated matter that other banks are struggling with too. I could explain further but I don’t think Claycord wants me to keep things somewhat short and not write dissertations.
This absolutely belongs in Politics! The latest administration dumped trillions of dollars on the economy to create a sugar high with the predictable result of inflation and the raising of interest rates by the Federal Reserve. Unlike pressing down on both the brake and accelerator at the same time for your car, we will now experience all sorts of additional issues like this bank failure. This is what happens when people vote for fun and based on mean tweets and manipulations by media propaganda machines: a developing financial crisis, a morally bankrupt administration giving women’s awards to men in dresses, and denial that this is an actual country with borders, all this while our main military adversary readies for war.
Agreed, this topic belongs here. Right now anyone involved in capital markets is thinking, “How many others are there in similar trouble?” We have to hope SVB is an anomaly. If investors sense another financial services crisis it’s going to get ugly real fast.
The last time we had a deeper bench: Henry Paulson and Ben Bernanke. Further, inflation hovered just under 4%, the deficit was much smaller, and we weren’t flighting a shadow war. If this becomes a real problem, the timing couldn’t be worse.
