If other ingredients need to be added in an attempt to improve on the taste of Brussels sprouts, then it implies that Brussels sprouts on their own, really do taste nasty. There is some truth in the old adage, “you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.”

I don’t think that is true. Many recipes are enhanced by adding something to the mix. Vegetable are often enhanced when adding herbs and butter to them. Does not mean they are not good on their own. Cole slaw is good because of the dressing. I love potatoes, but they are even better when coated in butter and fresh parsley.

The funny thing is my brother who was born four years later wouldn’t eat cheese because I wouldn’t eat it. He is also an old man and he orders Pizza without cheese. Neither of us have ever had a cheese burger or Mac and cheese. Or any gourmet cheese. As far as I go is cheez it crackers. My brother won’t even eat them.

In Denmark aged cheese is very popular. When growing up we had cheese at my parents house all the time, ranging from a mild Harvarti, to an aged Port Salut. It had a foul smell, thus would only be brought out at the end of the meal, my dad loved it, my mother did. I liked it even as a child. The cheese would be wrapped in moist cloth, then wrapped in wax paper, the sealed in a plastic bag. We had a pantry that faced north and and a small window, the cheese would be hung by a string outside the window.

Ricardo, Ha, ha. I can imagine. By the way I meant to write my dad loved what we called “old” cheese, my mother did not. A typical sit down lunch in Denmark, start with pickled herring, served on rye bread, then different cold cuts, and then cheese at the end, it is not unusual to have 2-3 cheeses on the table even for an everyday lunch, one often would be blue cheese, which I also loved and still do, all eaten on European style rye bread.

As a child I was a very picky eater. Didn’t like cooked vegetables, only raw, which actually is healthier. I ate liver, and hearts, I think they were pig hearts, my mother would stuff them with parsley and the fry them, serived with brown gravy and potatoes Also calf liver, fried with onions. My parents were big on fish, but I got a fish bone stuck in my throat probably around the age 8-10 that soured my on fish that had bones in it, although I have overcome that fear. My grandmother’s gravy (nearly every meal in Denmark at that time was served with graVy) had lumps in it, and I hated gravy with lumps. Before we would visit, my mother would instruct me that I HAD to eat the gravy, because it would be impolite not to. I think I manage a few spoonfuls. It was my mother’s mother, somewho my mother learned ot make gravy without lumps. Grateful for that.
