Lol, he already has 6 priors. What a joke the system is.

WC April 14, 2020 - 12:04 PM - 12:04 PM

Whatever date it is some people will say Gavin did the right thing!

Mike Wagner April 14, 2020 - 1:22 PM - 1:22 PM

He did.

Ricardoh April 14, 2020 - 12:07 PM - 12:07 PM

May 1st thats a Friday so probably Monday May 4th.

Simonpure April 14, 2020 - 12:07 PM - 12:07 PM

First day of summer

Cellophane April 14, 2020 - 12:08 PM - 12:08 PM

A guess would be that partial lifting could begin later in May with a full lifting perhaps in August.

I’d sure like to be wrong and see a full lifting May 1, but I doubt that will happen.

I believe we will all see ramifications of this shut down for years.

Future shutdowns are a certainty.

Once the Government takes freedoms, freedom are lost forever.

Gittyup April 14, 2020 - 12:12 PM - 12:12 PM

It will have to be lifted by the time the stimulus checks arrive so everybody can spend them. Otherwise, it won’t function as a stimulus and there is no reason to issue them.

Aunt Barbara April 14, 2020 - 12:56 PM - 12:56 PM

I wish Newsom thought that way. I’m afraid his hair gel has started to seep in his brain. He’s not thinking of all the repercussions.

Mike Wagner April 14, 2020 - 1:25 PM - 1:25 PM

Nonsense.

Why would those checks not be able to be used for grocery shopping, purchasing take-out food, buying gas, having your car worked on, or buying things online?

None of those purchases have anything to do with whether or not the Stay at Home order has been lifted.

Aunt Barbara April 14, 2020 - 3:41 PM - 3:41 PM

I think those checks should be used on businesses that were forced to close. They are the ones suffering.

Candy April 14, 2020 - 6:55 PM - 6:55 PM

Please go easy on the Governor Aunt Barbara. He’s doing a fine job. I wish the President of the United States was as competent, intelligent, and had the same leadership skills as Governor Newsom.

Aunt Barbara April 14, 2020 - 9:08 PM - 9:08 PM

Love ‘dem hypocrites.

Dude1 April 15, 2020 - 9:20 AM - 9:20 AM

NOT a stimulus check… the media gave it that tittle. It was started and still is a “help you get by” check. So easily led around by buss words.

Dude1 April 15, 2020 - 9:32 AM - 9:32 AM

@candy… so Trump closing travel to China and being told he was racist for that and possibly stopping the further spread of the disease, that’s incompetent? Or sending the Army corps of engineers to build field hospitals BEFORE they were needed was incompetent? Sending out trillions of dollars to save this country was incompetent? Giving daily briefings about where we are and hiring some of the brightest doctors was incompetent? Working with Governor Newsom for aid to CALIFORNIA makes him incompetent.. think you better look around… Newsom…the guy who stole our gas tax from roads and promised repairs that still aren’t happening? That’s competent? Gavin the guy who would use the millions of dollars in tax surplus budget for tax relief to taxpayers but decided to give aid to illegal immigrants free healthcare? That’s competent? You are clueless!

Candy April 15, 2020 - 11:16 AM - 11:16 AM

@dude1 Newsom would have done the same.things that Trump did, but in a more competent manner. And the roads are awful in need of repairs!

anon April 16, 2020 - 12:24 PM - 12:24 PM

@Candy

The democrats viewed closing the border as racist. This was repeated endlessly when Trump closed the borders. I imagine Newsom would have towed the line and not closed them.

Rob April 14, 2020 - 12:12 PM - 12:12 PM

Given that the Gov did the opposite of what Trump was saying – CA is farther ahead of the curve and has saved MANY lives.

I’ll await the Gov’s updates – because Trump is losing what little he had left.

JWB April 14, 2020 - 12:20 PM - 12:20 PM

Too early for some and too late for some others.

Bobfished April 14, 2020 - 12:20 PM - 12:20 PM

PO'd April 14, 2020 - 12:22 PM - 12:22 PM

My money’s on June 1st-that will depend on Gov. Newsom not jumping the gun on a start-up, of course.

Kirkwood April 14, 2020 - 12:24 PM - 12:24 PM

With the conflicting public information out there I don’t see how a date could be estimated right now. If the date is May 1, the decision should be made April 30. Perhaps decisions should be by region, county, city, etc. and based upon cases within the population density. Escalon, Antioch, etc.

Barbosa April 14, 2020 - 12:28 PM - 12:28 PM

Memorial day.

Concordejet April 14, 2020 - 12:29 PM - 12:29 PM

I will bet $1.00 if the SIP will be lift in Mid June. All it because too many people are cheating by leaving their house with non essential

Life getting harder and harder sooner or later in CCC we will force people to wear Mask when leaving your home.

I have no problem wearing my mask. Thanks goodness I bought a mask in late Feb. so I am well prepared.

I just bought more gloves I found them at the Pic N Save convience store across the street from the Park N Shop. There were even toilet paper there. I bought a pack of 4 for $6.00 it expensive right but you do not have much of a choice. safer than sorry.

Aunt Barbara April 14, 2020 - 12:59 PM - 12:59 PM

Gloves don’t help unless you change them very often and never touch your face. Washing hands is best. Gloves still spread to other people..I don’t like to see grocery workers wearing, them handling cash and your food at the same time.

Kirkwood April 14, 2020 - 2:12 PM - 2:12 PM

Gloves are a good reminder to not touch the face.

Bob April 14, 2020 - 12:49 PM - 12:49 PM

May 1st.

Do it incrementally week by week AA style. If the numbers spike above a predetermined mark, reset to the current restriction level. Start with the reopening of all businesses with preventative guidelines in place. Use the next few months to go full Manhatten Project on Corona research in case of a second wave in the fall.

Original G April 14, 2020 - 12:54 PM - 12:54 PM

Lifted between 10 – 14 May, there’ll be a small secondary spike three weeks later.

Bad Nombre April 14, 2020 - 12:55 PM - 12:55 PM

It will be lifted when it becomes clear that people will no longer comply.

Gittyup April 14, 2020 - 1:13 PM - 1:13 PM

From what I’ve seen when I’ve been out, we’re almost there.

Dorothy April 14, 2020 - 12:55 PM - 12:55 PM

Depends on who is doing the lifting and what criteria the lifer might impose to implement it. June or July, August at the latest so school can start again.

For a return to run out and do whatever you want, where and with who you want, with other than normal consequences, I would say next year.

JJ April 14, 2020 - 1:20 PM - 1:20 PM

May the 4th be with you.

Roz April 14, 2020 - 4:56 PM - 4:56 PM

Cute!,…Got a laugh from my Hubby too.
Maybe about end of May?,… if we are LUCKY.
But think it will be mid June for life to get back to some kind of normal. Plus, hoping Hubby is back to work then too (XX)

Kentucky Derby April 14, 2020 - 1:30 PM - 1:30 PM

I have no idea. I just hope it’s soon. Does anybody really know when it’s safe? And what’s the definition of “safe” when not all businesses and residents are complying? And what’s the definition of “essential?” All businesses are essential to someone or they wouldn’t be in business.

Thanks for playing…

Old Timer April 14, 2020 - 1:32 PM - 1:32 PM

When ever the Democratic Party says so.🤮

DVC Student April 14, 2020 - 1:37 PM - 1:37 PM

June 1st – 15th

It was always going to be in the range but the Gov’t knew the public would have a freak-out moment if they were told in March to self-isolate until June.

Strad April 14, 2020 - 1:45 PM - 1:45 PM

When they ca do more testing. Employees will be tested and it sounds like customers will be checked for fevers.

Mike Wagner April 14, 2020 - 1:54 PM - 1:54 PM

Probably a staggered “rolling” re-opening of various activities in the State based on certain health metrics being achieved.

https://carlsonschool.umn.edu/mili-misrc-covid19-tracking-project

Looks like we are currently running at a rate of 12% hospitalizations to infection cases and the percentage of hospital beds occupied by Covid-19 patients is around 4.2% with 1,178 in ICU or ventilated.

My guess is that we need to see the number of hospitalizations (currently at 3,015) drop back below April 1st numbers, which was just shy of 2,000 to allow for partial re-opening.

just1dering April 14, 2020 - 2:07 PM - 2:07 PM

Mothers Day May 19th for one day
Fathers Day June 21 for one day
Forth of July for one day
I see it as one day here and there until Q3 2021

Natalie April 14, 2020 - 2:15 PM - 2:15 PM

Sometime in May there might be revised regulations that allow some office workers to go back if they can distance themselves in the office. Perhaps new regulations allowing small “non-essential” businesses to operate with limited customer capacity, provided owners and staff wear masks and gloves at all times. There will be a gradual easing and modification of restrictions over the summer, with adjustments made as new health data and statistics come in.

In summer, our part of the greater Bay Area will have the warmer weather which substantially impedes the spread of the virus . Other places in California don’t get as warm, so the threat of the virus still be prominently lingering over there.

There is a comment above about “stimulus checks'”. The checks aren’t for stimulating the economy by going on a shopping spree.. They are for paying bills and for buying necessities. Although you can do with them as you wish, most people will use the checks for essentials.

AnonZ April 14, 2020 - 2:29 PM - 2:29 PM

I’m hoping and guessing that California’s orders will start lifting by end of April, although I think travel from New York or East coast should be banned/limited for a while longer. New York needs to stay under Shelter orders until about Mid-May or longer if cases keep popping up. I’d imagine other States who reported minimal cases would also be able to open up in early May.

The Fearless Spectator April 14, 2020 - 2:43 PM - 2:43 PM

Today our Governor announced, “There is no light switch here, it’s more like a dimmer”.

That doesn’t sound very encouraging for any near-term change. Let’s hope for a pleasant surprise to the contrary.

chuckie the troll April 14, 2020 - 2:58 PM - 2:58 PM

Not until Newsome runs out of other people’s money. The continued uncertainty perpetuated by his announcement should dismay everyone, business owners, workers, parents, etc…Economists already warn that many small businesses will never reopen, it’s already too late for them. And the fear factor is going to be around until people gird up their loins and take back their lives.

Another possibility is when the trade unions threaten to vote Republican.

Ano April 14, 2020 - 2:58 PM - 2:58 PM

Where is the 1pm update of cases in our county

Ann April 14, 2020 - 3:57 PM - 3:57 PM

Ano I thought the same Maybe there has not been any new cases and such interesting that they haven’t had a update

Ann April 14, 2020 - 2:59 PM - 2:59 PM

If we don’t open before June we will have Trump in office 4 more years

Mike Wagner April 14, 2020 - 3:43 PM - 3:43 PM

Actually, its the other way around.

Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania are getting crushed. The farming communities and manufacturing sectors which have a heavy presence in those 3 states wont be voting RED again anytime soon because they are bleeding RED.

In fact, they were bleeding well before Covid-19 because of the Trade Tariffs.

JJ April 14, 2020 - 3:07 PM - 3:07 PM

Stimulus checks were sent to stimulate the economy.

If that means some people buying an iPhone. Then it worked. 😀

Hopefully, people who need it will spend or save it wisely. Maybe start that emergency fund some have been putting off?

But then, in the world of finance, hope is not a strategy.

Gittyup April 14, 2020 - 3:47 PM - 3:47 PM

@JJ They’d have a much better chance of getting an IPhone if the Apple stores were open.

Bobfished April 14, 2020 - 3:23 PM - 3:23 PM

The people will start up when they decide it’s time. It is the people who get to decide, not some crazy politician who knows nothing about our lives.

LL Cool J April 14, 2020 - 3:32 PM - 3:32 PM

After they force vaccinate everyone.

Ann April 14, 2020 - 3:51 PM - 3:51 PM

@LL they did that with the polio vaccination and people dropped like flies You cant just make a vaccination and give it to people you have to make sure it is safe first and that could take years!

Yves Harlowe April 14, 2020 - 4:58 PM - 4:58 PM

Ann, where are getting that people dropped like flies from polio vaccine? I can’t find anything other than it was a very safe vaccine and polio was pretty much eradicated worldwide. I remember standing in line in a school gymnasium with my parents to get the vaccine. My parents were so grateful there was a vaccine. When they were growing, there was so much fear of polio, and my parents knew people who got it and ended up disabled. Thousands of people died from polio! The vaccine was a real benefit to people. I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Cellophane April 14, 2020 - 4:06 PM - 4:06 PM

I hear some guy talking on the radio today and he said everyone should remain on lockdown and all businesses should remain closed until everyone can feel safe leaving their homes. Everyone should feel safe going to sports events, restaurants and shopping. He also stated that none of this should happen until a vaccine was developed and everyone had taken the cure.

Then I read someone who said that life is a risk from the time you are born until the day you die. I believe that at no time in anyone’s life are they free from risk. No one is ever really safe.

The government can only dictate to the people one avenue for avoiding viruses. That avenue does not allow for any individuality.

America is a nation of individuals which is based on the idea that everyone can think for themselves and be responsible for themselves.

Reading these comments shows me that people no longer want the be individuals but simply part of an obedient crowd following their proclaimed leaders.

Many of us prefer not to follow the crowd and take responsibility for ourselves and hold ourselves accountable.

We are free to be individuals.

The obedient crowd hates us because we do not conform to their ideals.

That’s ok. They are free to be what they want to be.

That’s how freedom works.

When this quarantine is over, many of us will still be free.

Janie April 14, 2020 - 4:43 PM - 4:43 PM

With all the people that don’t want to wear masks and gloves, I could not guess !but I think it will be awhile!

the spanish flu should serve as a dramatic lesson “to everyone” as what not to do!

Barbie Girl April 14, 2020 - 7:50 PM - 7:50 PM

I heard from a friend with Cal govt,.October 1st.

Jack Flash April 14, 2020 - 8:19 PM - 8:19 PM

They already said even if the actual shelter-in-place is over, it will be a long time before we return to “normalcy”. My hope is that we can at least go back seeing friends and family even if we have to wear masks or whatever.

Jack's Fan April 14, 2020 - 9:09 PM - 9:09 PM

Any hope of re-opening things quickly (by June imho) will really hinge on infection levels lowering due to folks actually heeding the warnings, and an effective treatment being discovered and/or developed. Not a vaccine, but a treatment that significantly lowers the severity and mortality rate of cases.

Too early to say one way or the other, but my money is on science and technology helping us enjoy summer!

Aprilewine April 14, 2020 - 9:17 PM - 9:17 PM

We have stopped SIP on April 3rd just as they asked.
We will continue no SIP thank you very much.

Gittyup April 14, 2020 - 9:24 PM - 9:24 PM

Given that the Democrats had Trump up for their hateful impeachment proceedings and one investigation after another, it is a wonder he could concentrate on anything for weeks ahead of the virus crisis. It speaks to his dedication and leadership that he didn’t miss a beat and got right on the problem. And, what else have Democrats done since his election. They haven’t done squat.

Newsom dances around, gestures wildly, and blabbers endlessly because he loves to hear the sound of his own voice. If nothing else, we should be delighted when this is over if only that we no longer have to listen to this blithering idiot.

Impenniless April 14, 2020 - 9:29 PM - 9:29 PM

They say this week California is supposed to hit its peak for deaths, well if everyone gets their stimulus checks this week too, than I predict that in about 14 days we will have another small peak because everyone was out spending their stimulus.

Soundboy April 15, 2020 - 3:27 AM - 3:27 AM

Got my stimulus payment already.

Gittyup April 14, 2020 - 9:41 PM - 9:41 PM

@Steepers Thank you very much. I get tired of trying to return the insults and generally want to be more constructive than that, but a number of people here seem to enjoy that kind of thing, especially when they disagree with me. One in particular was a Ninny in Westport and apparent friend of Atticus Thraxx who once told me “It’s a Game.” His words, not mine!

dirkbenedict April 14, 2020 - 9:54 PM - 9:54 PM

We have friends that work in several majot big hospital in Sacramento area and they have been working short hours cause there are not enough patients there to need full staffing.
Dont believe everything you hear on the news hospitals are overflowing…they are not.

Concerned April 15, 2020 - 8:31 AM - 8:31 AM

That’s because we started to take actions earlier than most areas. Do you think the virus is fake news.? Both CNN and Fox have had on air commentators come down with the virus and each have had terrible experiences. A blind person can see that this is real.

Mike Wagner April 15, 2020 - 6:03 PM - 6:03 PM

Apparently, you haven’t figured out yet that hospitals stopped doing elective procedures awhile 6 weeks ago.

ilovepopcorn April 15, 2020 - 8:42 PM - 8:42 PM

Thank goodness we have a great governor who has brains more someone I can think of here.. It is not a black or white thing. Gradually things will be changed. I think June or July and then if the curve stays flat it will stay otherwise we can go right back where we are now. We will never be the way before we were unless they develop a vaccine and do more testing for all of us. My humble opinion. This is very serious.

Gittyup April 15, 2020 - 10:46 PM - 10:46 PM

@Ozzie Like your rear to the seat?

Hanne Jeppesen April 16, 2020 - 12:23 AM - 12:23 AM

Gitty Up, Since when has disagreeing with you equal an insult? I don’t call you names I don’t get personal I merely disagree with you. And half the time Claycord don’t post it, but they have no problems posting the insults you hurl at me.

Ozzie April 16, 2020 - 8:55 AM - 8:55 AM

Makes you wonder doesn’t it.

Hanne Jeppesen April 16, 2020 - 12:27 AM - 12:27 AM

GittyUp, I was not a nanny, I was an au pair, although au pair act as nannies, it is a different arrangement. It is usually European young women who takes a break from higher education, and want to perfect their English. Thus the arrangement is that the get time off to attend English classes, in addition to regular time off. I came her because I wanted to improve my English and I stayed because I loved Westport and wanted to stay in the US.

Ilovepopcorn April 16, 2020 - 7:46 AM - 7:46 AM

I have noticed that there is a political bias on Claycord that helps out the conservative belief system. If they post this I will be surprised. It gets tiresome at times. I ask for equality for all points of view.

To Do List April 16, 2020 - 9:10 AM - 9:10 AM

Ilovepopcorn: I really do not have a good intuition on whether there is a political bias in political discussions here but two things for you. First, the politics section and the political discussions here are just a small part of this communications platform. Second, I do not believe you or anyone who is to the left politically is in any kind of position to cry for equality. If you were to put on a MAGA hat and walk through the UC Berkeley campus when in session, you would variously have your hat knocked off, be confronted, yelled at, spit at and perhaps physically assaulted. If you stayed and stood your ground, it would turn into a police situation. Versions of that would also happen if you wore that hat in downtown SF or on BART and so on. I think you are not asking for equality, you are asking for supreme dominance.

mtzman April 16, 2020 - 9:22 AM - 9:22 AM

There is indeed a political bias. A few years back there was a poll taken here on a local ballot measure — I forget which one but I think it was a transportation measure. The measure passed the voters by a 60-40 margin but was opposed here by a 60-40 margin, a conservative swing of roughly 40 percentage points. Very imprecise and unscientific but it seems about right to me.

I have also noticed that some of the worst offenders when it comes to name-calling seem to get a free pass when names are hurled back at them. At least that has been my experience.

Silva April 16, 2020 - 9:45 AM - 9:45 AM

Or maybe it’s the name calling and personal attacks which often follow posters from article to article that can discourage more civil posters. A lot of people prefer to avoid that in their lives whenever possible. You must be prepared for some bullying in order to post here. It is great to have a platform that offers freedom for so many points of view, but the bullying does often go too far for some people to get involved. It’s often difficult to impossible to figure out what the reasons are for certain posts not to be made public, but it is the editor’s ultimate choice.

Silva April 16, 2020 - 10:01 AM - 10:01 AM

For me an oldish person with underlying conditions, it will come to an end when populations are properly tested and studies show it is safe to do so. Otherwise it’s unnecessary guesswork. If it’s called off prematurely we just end up back where we started Life is full of risks. There are risks whenever you leave the house. There are many risks at home. Some risk is not easily avoided, but they’re mitigated whenever possible. I’d wager to say nobody lives to be my age without carefully selecting what risks they choose to take. I chose not to be a pandemic guinea pig for the sake of the economy and other’s livelihoods. It is not at all an easy choice.

Hanne Jeppesen April 16, 2020 - 1:37 PM - 1:37 PM

To Do List, I think we are just talking about comments on Claycord. Although I consider myself liberal, I’m very opposed to the closemindedness that comes from Berkeley and the far left. All voices should be heard, of course if someone incites violence or are racist that is a different story, but reasonable conservatives should have free speech in any venue, those who can’t tolerate a different viewpoint can stay away. As mentioned I’m liberal, but there are several conservatives I enjoy listening to, or did, one is the late Charles Krauthammer, didn’t always agree with him, but he was very intelligent, and had some good points. I would not go to a lecture by for example Anne Coulter, she is just much of a flame thrower, and I think she says thinks just to be controversial. I think on a blog like this, pretty much all comments should be posted, it seems only fair, and it also makes the blog more interesting. One more fairly conservative I enjoy listening to is Gordon Chang, he knows a lot about China and that whole area.
