Really? A public school can now enforce a flu shot vaccination? What will the anti-vaxers say to this? Health care workers are required by their job to get one, but a public school can require you to get one to attend their classes? I do not think this will go over well.

And to the you, yes, I get one every year, see note above about Health Care workers.

TraumaRx August 10, 2020 - 9:52 AM - 9:52 AM

Not all Health Care workers are required to get the flu shot. All depends on where you work.

The Fat Cat August 10, 2020 - 1:03 PM - 1:03 PM

Who cares what anti-vaxxers have to say? They have no credibility on the subject.

parent August 10, 2020 - 1:25 PM - 1:25 PM

@TraumaX
I did not know that! I just assumed we all had to …

@Cat
They are going to argue, their body …

I am for the flu shot, but to be honest, never got one until I was required for work. Seems strange that a public institution can make this a requirement.

Sam August 10, 2020 - 1:54 PM - 1:54 PM

Lol you think you can’t force people to inject a companies product it’s their body. That’s funny. Anti vax is such a stupid insult. I also refuse to eat McDonald’s because it’s probably not good for me. Does that also place me as a strange conspiratorial type person deserving of ridicule?

Oh, please August 10, 2020 - 2:15 PM - 2:15 PM

I work at a hospital. We have to get a flu shot or choose to wear a mask for the entirety of flu season, chaging that mask every two hours while at work.

Sam August 10, 2020 - 8:55 AM - 8:55 AM

Nothing like state of California mafia tactics to force the sale of vaccines. This should be criminal. What if they forced you to buy Apple products in order to get an education? (Using the term education loosely here) Would you notice then? This is real fascism

The Fat Cat August 10, 2020 - 1:09 PM - 1:09 PM

iPads don’t keep people from getting sick. And if I don’t have an iPad, that does not put anyone around me at risk of getting sick.iPads also aren’t covered as preventative care under most insurance plans.

I don’t think that you know what fascism is.

Sam August 10, 2020 - 1:56 PM - 1:56 PM

So we are back to this…If you have the protection shield of your vaccination, you don’t need to worry about what I do

The Fat Cat August 10, 2020 - 4:02 PM - 4:02 PM

Not everyone can get the flu vaccine due to legitimate autoimmune disorders, among other *legitimate* reasons. One result of a high vaccination rate is a level of herd immunity that protects people who are at risk due to serious, preexisting illnesses. So yes, if you can find it in yourself to think about others and not just yourself, you will find that getting a flu vaccine helps you AND contributes to a widespread level of protection for those most at risk.

Hello Kitty August 10, 2020 - 6:09 PM - 6:09 PM

@Cat: and I assume you will be the arbiter of what “legitimate” is?

RANDOM TASK August 10, 2020 - 9:16 AM - 9:16 AM

of course they are

next will be you cant get a license without having the vaccine…for the covid

you cant get your tax return without the vaccine

Yoyohop August 10, 2020 - 9:17 AM - 9:17 AM

This was likely a requirement of the UC system’s Big Pharma backers.

Normalizing and mandating a flu vaccine will make it easier to sell any vaccine in the future. And as of this year the vaccine market has exploded.

It’s a smart scheme.

If you’ll put yourself decades in debt for a degree in cross-cultural basket weaving, why wouldn’t you also put your health at risk through annual injections of a chemical cocktail.

Jeffers August 10, 2020 - 10:17 AM - 10:17 AM

well said

DLo August 10, 2020 - 10:47 AM - 10:47 AM

Requirement of big pharma backers – LOL! Flu shots are free under any Affordable Care Act compliant medical plan.

The requirement is to avoid a surge of flu at health care facilities while we’re still dealing with COVID. Flu vaccinations help protect people in the community at large including those that are vulnerable to serious illness from the flu (e.g. pneumonia, death, etc.)

Yoyohop August 10, 2020 - 11:07 AM - 11:07 AM

@DlLo. What exactly are you saying?..College students will succumb to the flu in droves and overwhelm the hospitals if not vaccinated? 🙄

Or are you implying that they should be vaccinated to keep the rest of the population safe? But if flu vaccines are effective why would that be an issue?

Why would my lack of a vaccination endanger anyone else if they were vaccinated and the vaccine worked?

Dawg August 10, 2020 - 11:15 AM - 11:15 AM

@DLo, Nothing is free, Insurance will pay, and under the Affordable Care Act, or Medi-Cal, the government will pay.

Toni August 10, 2020 - 11:20 AM - 11:20 AM

DLo: Vaccines aren’t free. Someone is paying for it. And it isn’t the government, who doesn’t generate any money on its own. They are tax collectors who take our tax money and spend it for things like “free” vaccines.

The Fat Cat August 10, 2020 - 1:14 PM - 1:14 PM

@ Yoyohop

Some people are not able to get vaccines due to preexisting conditions including auto-immune disorders. So the reason that you not being vaccinated can endanger people is that there are some out there whose bodies cannot receive a vaccine due to those serious preexisting diagnoses. However, if a high enough percentage of the population is vaccinated, then herd immunity is achieved, meaning that the unvaccinated are protected because a virus like the flu effectively cannot spread throughout a population.

Yoyo Hop August 10, 2020 - 4:27 PM - 4:27 PM

@FatCat

That’s your justification for mandatory vaccines?

A small percentage of people with auto-immune diseases should cause ALL to lose their rights and risk their health?

By admitting that vaccines are dangerous to a specific demographic, you’re actually making my point.

Everyone with an impaired immune system due to an auto-immune disease is not aware of their heightened risk. And if everyone is required to get vaccinated, that demographic will be putting themselves in increased danger.

And yes, healthy people will also be hurt by the vaccine. Why do you think Big Pharma has legal immunity from damages caused by their products?

Ever asked a veteran if they’ve ever been sickened by a vaccine?

The GI “flu shot” I received made me sicker than I’ve been in my entire life.

DLo August 10, 2020 - 4:42 PM - 4:42 PM

The cost of my free vaccination as part of preventative care is factored into the my share and employer share my employer provided healthcare premium.

Affordable Care Act compliant plans require that the preventative care be included in the plan. This includes employer sponsored plans, Covered California, Medicare and MediCal. Not all plans are taxpayer funded…

Lazy One August 10, 2020 - 9:30 AM - 9:30 AM

If classes are online is this necessary?

idiots everywhere August 10, 2020 - 9:52 AM - 9:52 AM

Do not question authority, you must comply without asking such probing questions.

ilovepopcorn August 10, 2020 - 10:06 AM - 10:06 AM

Very good of them to be proactive. They were the best employer! Yes it is very necessary because we have to work there. Big Pharma? Really? Do you know that your flu shot this year is the most important one we ever have to get. Obviously it is the pandemic. Thank you UC System. A very smart move. Which reminds me: GET YOUR FLU SHOT! The healthier we all are the better this pandemic will go away or slow down at least. Stay smart and stay safe.

Cracky August 10, 2020 - 10:29 AM - 10:29 AM

Why is “MY BODY, MY RIGHTS” only acceptably chanted for certain, specific issues??? This is MY body, it is MY right to say NO to certain damaging, harmful chemicals being injected into it.

The Observer August 10, 2020 - 9:42 AM - 9:42 AM

They should require proof of vaccination to get into Target and Walmart.

Yoyohop August 10, 2020 - 12:06 PM - 12:06 PM

Surprised the Washington Post isn’t pushing this angle. Amazon would make another billion.

Can’t remember last time I took a flu shot. When I get the flu, I just get sick for a few days and let my immune system go to work.

Natalie August 10, 2020 - 10:44 AM - 10:44 AM

@Sam, flu shots can be gotten for free at medical facilities, as well as locations like CVS, Walgreens, and Target. The campus health care centers give free flu shots.

@Lazy One, classes are online, but many students are still living near their respective campuses. Given that the situation is fluid, there could be a chance of some campus facilities partially opening sometime in the Fall20-Spring21 school year, or a possibility of the UC establishing outdoor instruction on campus.

@ZZ, the UC health-care facilities will be busy dealing with Covid. They don’t want to have to deal with a lot of flu cases too. The flu has nothing to do with Covid. The UC just would prefer to focus their resources on Covid response, and not get bogged with flu cases.

A few leftist Kool aid drinkers agree! LOL!!! Go back to your houses with your hand sanitizer, masks, face shields and hide till the coast is clear. Some of us just want our country, jobs, lives, and minds back. Quit your stupid lectures on how some of us are sooo stupid because we don’t fall in line and drink your kool aid to believe.

The Fat Cat August 10, 2020 - 4:11 PM - 4:11 PM

“Some of us just want our country…back”

This country is not owned by any one particular group of people, so please spare us your entitled jingoism; it’s quite tired.

Yoyo Hop August 10, 2020 - 5:09 PM - 5:09 PM

This country may not be owned by one particular group of people, but it was formed with one particular concepts in mind.

The concept of Liberty is the essence of our country and it is not Jingoism to speak out when something essential to our way of life is being destroyed.

If anything reeks of Jingoism (or Jingoism by proxy), it is the widespread attempts to silence others at a time when a dubious perpetual emergency has suspended our Constitutional rights.

The destruction of our liberties is the destruction of our country.

I wonder, who would benefit from such a thing?

The Fat Cat August 10, 2020 - 8:33 PM - 8:33 PM

@yo

Don’t trip chocolate chip 😉 I’m not trying to silence your dumb antivax opinions, just show how absurd they are

Yoyo Hop August 10, 2020 - 9:24 PM - 9:24 PM

@ Fat Cat,

Hmm,

You’re pointing out the absurdity of the anti-vaccine stance by noting that vaccines are admittedly harmful to a certain demographic.

Love the irony!

They want to mandate vaccines, The 1986 non-liability of vaccine manufacturers needs to be removed.
That’s right……You cannot sue if you’re one of the statistics who suffers injury from a vaccine.

LL Cool J August 10, 2020 - 12:28 PM - 12:28 PM

I hope those people are prepared for virus interference. When challenged with Covid or the Covid vaccine, those who get flu shots are more likely to become seriously ill. Well documented. Virus interference. Look it up. Mainstream news won’t tell you about it.

anon August 10, 2020 - 1:43 PM - 1:43 PM

Well that’s terrifying. Add this to things like ADE.

Just me August 10, 2020 - 12:43 PM - 12:43 PM

The flu shot is not 100% effective against the strain that it is made for. And the strain that it is made for might not even be the strain that is prevalent that year. The flu shot is one of the shots that still has mercury in it.
I don’t understand why people literally add insult to injury by calling people antivaxxers. The majority of people that are called antivax, DID get their children vaccinated. AND their child was vaccine injured.
(Insulting a parent of an injured child!!!)
You can’t sue the vaccine makers, they have zero liability. The government gave this to the vaccine industry in 1986.
There is a vaccine court that you can take your case to, but you will be going against the Federal government and their lawyers. But if you do win the case nobody is held responsible, and the money you get is from tax dollars, not the vaccine makers. The vaccine court has paid out over
$4 Billion dollars to families of vaccine injured kids.
I have a question for everyone.
If vaccines are effective, why do you care if someone else is not vaccinated.
For those that are PRO-LIFE, do you know that there is aborted fetal tissue in vaccines? WI-38 and MRC-5 are both human fetal cell lines.Check the link or you can check the CDC website. the ingredient lists are there too but you have to search hard to find them. Or check the vaccine manufacturer websites and search for package inserts. Ask your doctor for the package inserts from a vaccine before you get it, you will need to research what a lot of the ingredients are like the aborted babies listed above, they don’t say aborted human babies, they say WI-38 or MRC-5.

https://www.historyofvaccines.org/index.php/content/articles/human-cell-strains-vaccine-development

Do your research before calling people names or trying to discredit them. Most so called antivaxxers weren’t always against vaccines, they thought vaccines were safe and they have to be tested right? Wrong! No vaccine on the current 72 dose (before you start school) schedule has been tested against an INERT placebo. Check out Google Scholar and search before 1990. Most studies after 1990 have had their data manipulated because the studies are not done by an independent company, they are paid for by the manufacturers. The cigarette companies did the same thing, paid for the studies and new they were addictive and caused cancer. So they manipulated the data to show that smoking menthol cigarettes were good for sore throats and cigarettes in general aided digestion, they helped with weight loss, etc. Four out of five doctors smoke Camels than any other brand.
Keep believing everything the government tells you because politicians don’t lie. They have always done what is best for We the People.

Just you August 10, 2020 - 1:40 PM - 1:40 PM

will they wear yellow stars to identify themselves as flu shoot recipients?

Natalie August 10, 2020 - 7:27 PM - 7:27 PM

@Ash, your comment is disgusting, and mocks the Holocaust.

@Shea Gaier, even if this year’s vaccine isn’t for the precisely correct flu strain, it still can help reduce flu symptoms. A vaccine doesn’t have to be a perfect match to offer some benefit.
