SteinMart clothing store, located in the Orchards shopping center on Ygnacio Valley Rd. at Oak Grove Rd. in Walnut Creek, is closing.

The company said “due to the combination of a challenging retail environment and the impact of COVID-19, we and our advisors determined that we will wind down the business.”

All 283 SteinMart stores throughout the country are expected to shut down in 2020. Their online shop has already closed.

Never understood their business model of success, particularly in a high rent area like the Orchards. Like a duck out of water.

But ducks can still walk and fly pretty well…

Gotta say:
Stein Mart is a terrible name for a store. Unless you re selling beer mugs.

Noj September 16, 2020 - 10:11 PM - 10:11 PM

Worst name I ever saw was “Herpes Pizza.” No lie.

JJ2 September 16, 2020 - 11:23 PM - 11:23 PM

Really? They don’t sell Steins? I thought they were a home brewery supply store….

Another one bites the dust due to the Wuhan SARS-Covid2 virus

….the Chinese Communist Party generated the virus to weaken the United States.

And if anyone is doubting that at this point, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE turn off your CNN!!

Forgive my ignorance, but what did they sell?

Clayton gal September 16, 2020 - 3:03 PM - 3:03 PM

Like a higher end Ross. Same types of things a little pricier.

Stein Mart was always a huge disappointment for me. I never found any interesting mugs at all!

Kirkwood September 16, 2020 - 12:24 PM - 12:24 PM

Stein Mart? Never heard of it.

You didn’t miss much. I could never find anything I liked there. From what I observed, most, if not all, of their clothes were from China or other countries. Rather poor quality and not fashionable.

Ricardoh September 16, 2020 - 12:42 PM - 12:42 PM

There is a Chinese virologist that said it definitely was man made. She is going to present her proof shortly. She was there. How would Facebook know about viruses?

Real American September 16, 2020 - 12:58 PM - 12:58 PM

What evidence can you cite to refute this scientific study? Ignorance doesn’t count.

The problem is other experts are refuting her paper saying much of it contains unsubstantiated claims fictional and circumstantial evidence. Her paper has also not been peer reviewed and was backed by the Far Right like Steven Banon. This is how science works, it needs to be peer reviewed to be accepted. This is basically how the antivax started, one person published a paper that later was proven wrong time and time again by the scientific community. Yet, here we are.

Look, if it turns out she is right, then China should be punished by the global community. The only fact we have, is that this pandemic is NOT a hoax and doesn’t excuse the President of trying to down play the impact to save the stock market. If anything this shows the President’s complete incompetence. If all he cared about were the polls he would have taken it serious and would likely be leading in the polls like every other world leader that didn’t brush it off.

Former Californian September 16, 2020 - 2:58 PM - 2:58 PM

Like Michael Mann and his infamous peer reviewed “hockey stick” graph for global warming? Peer reviewed ain’t what it used to be, and as for your amateur political commentary we will see in November. Polls tend to over inflate one parties popularity as if you need to be reminded of recent history

I thought I read somewhere that Fauci was connected to the Wuhan lab somehow before the virus got loose.

This is no longer a Gig economy, it is a Gag economy! If you lost a job, thank Newsom.

Hanne Jeppesen September 16, 2020 - 10:02 PM - 10:02 PM

Reasonable, Don’t believe everything you “read somewhere” I read somewhere that the earth was flat.

Silva September 16, 2020 - 2:42 PM - 2:42 PM

Clothing, you say? I’m thinking it was probably a mistake calling it that. Though I was curious I purposely avoided learning anything at all about the business. The very last thing I’d have needed was a collection of steins. Or any more clothing either, TBH.

I could never understand how this company managed to stay in business in the first place. It was even more baffling when they opened this new store.

Pony September 16, 2020 - 6:32 PM - 6:32 PM

I went there maybe four or five times. It always seemed jammed with stuff. Hard to navigate. Hard to find stuff Seemed a little pricy too but figured that was them trying to be more upscale

Sandy G September 16, 2020 - 7:26 PM - 7:26 PM

I went there a few Tim’s. Found some really cute tops that were different from what everybody sells. I found the prices good and fair for the quality. I found bedding, a throw and a great piece of luggage at a great price. I’ll miss them.

I don’t like those big drainage ditches all over The Orchards. I guess they are trendy; designed to catch water during the climate change drought our Governor keeps talking about. I know, it’s our fault…….

Hanne Jeppesen September 16, 2020 - 10:04 PM - 10:04 PM

Went there a couple of times. Did have some tops that were cute and different. However, they were not that inexpensive, and since I work at Macy’s and we have great sales and I get an employee discount I rarely buy clothing and many other items at other stores.

It was nice to go shopping with a friend there and then to go over to California Fish Grill for battered fish and chips afterward. The merchandise was a surprising mix no matter what time of year.

I Really loved this small Store. I got my grandson a Calvin Klein suit there for $100 for his dance. I bought designer purses for under $50. It had things you did not see in other department stores and it was not at a mall. Quiet and secluded shopping. I will miss going there. ☹️

I was so excited when SteinMart opened in Walnut Creek! And am so disappointed it’s closing. Loved to shop at Steinmart in Palm Srings and other states whenever I was travelling. I have found lots of great name brands for low prices in SteinMart… all those who’ve commented about the quality…please continue to overpay for the same products at your “finer” stores and leave the bargains for those who appreciate a good find at a low price.

Fed Up September 17, 2020 - 2:43 PM - 2:43 PM

Debt and COVID killed this business and many others like JC Penney. Unfortunately many more businesses will fail because they will never be able to catch up on past rent. Many restaurants are raising prices beyond reasonable to make up for it. I think over time it will be shown that the shut down never should have happened. Look at stats for the increases in suicides, domestic violence, etc as a result of this shutdown.
