Actually, Covid is probably the best thing that has happened to Clayton in a long time. Gives the newcomers to town (those who came since the ’80s) some idea what Clayton was like before. You know what I mean, before all the Chamber of Commerce-type events started by new arrivals to Clayton who thought they could “improve” on things. Before all the “festivals” invited hoards into a small, cramped area of town, with massive traffic and parking issues, noise and exhaust fumes. The days when you could easily get to the post office on weekends, or, the few operating businesses in town, easily park, and even fewer people were out and about. No protests, no demonstrations, no crime to speak of. When you said you lived in Clayton, you had to explain where that was — it wasn’t even on the map. Take note now, When Covid is over, Clayton will return to what those newcomers have made it — unpleasant.

How many remember “The Grove”?

Gittyup September 20, 2020 - 10:44 PM - 10:44 PM

The Eucalyptus Grove, a beautiful part of downtown Clayton, at one time. Kept it cool and comfortable in the Summer heat.

Lots of happy chickens too.

I remember The Grove and the July 4th events there; remember the greased pole climb?. We’ve lived in Clayton since 1977 and it has changed. However, it could be a lot worse. Many people are unaware that what is now Oakhurst could have been a lot different. The developer who owned the land wanted to build about twice as many houses as are now in Oakhurst and wanted to build all over the ridgelines. It would have been a disaster. The citizens and city government wouldn’t let it happen and the developer gave up. It’s still a great place to live.
