State Of California To Stop Accepting New Unemployment Claims For Two Weeks To Address Backlog

by CLAYCORD.com

Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday that the state Economic Development Department will stop accepting new unemployment insurance applications for two weeks to determine how to reduce the state’s vast backlog of claims.

The EDD temporarily halted accepting new claims on Saturday following the release of a report detailing why the agency has not been able to handle the influx of unemployment insurance applications since the novel coronavirus pandemic began.

The report from the EDD Strike Team found a backlog of some 600,000 unfulfilled unemployment claims due in part to claims being flagged for manual procession rather than being processed through the state’s automated identification system.

In addition, that backlog was growing by some 10,000 claims per day before the agency halted new applications.

Before the two-week pause began on Saturday, some 40 percent of unemployment claims were being sent to manual processing, which can take weeks or months to complete, according to the report.

Go Newsom Go. You screwed up the state of ca so bad, and now you are going to tell us that we can’t file a claim for 2 additional weeks. That means everyones rent and house payments will be 6 weeks late. You freaking rock dude!

hill September 21, 2020 - 6:33 PM - 6:33 PM

California has become a major failure in many ways. We have become the example of how NOT to run a state.

Buddy September 21, 2020 - 6:33 PM - 6:33 PM

How about Newsom stop receiving his check until the backlog is taken of

S September 21, 2020 - 7:51 PM - 7:51 PM

it would be a false gesture. He doesn’t need the government pay check to get buy… He has other ventures.

Exit 12A September 21, 2020 - 7:38 PM - 7:38 PM

… another prime example of this State government’s ineptitude.

Idiots are running this insane asylum.

Lost Pride September 21, 2020 - 7:47 PM - 7:47 PM

Obviously he has never run a business. Isn’t that like Olive Garden not put a person on the waiting to be seated list?

Ash September 21, 2020 - 7:53 PM - 7:53 PM

backlog, LOL!

gavin spent all the “surplus” the state never had and so now he wants uncle sam to bail him/us out. just like every other time there is problem

Well now how about this. In this state we can pick up our smart phone, use it to order four 5lb bags of coffee which will show up the next day on our porch.

Guess that’s the difference between a PRIVATE for profit culture versus a government bureaucracy where improvements in efficiency or in a process often result in elimination of state worker jobs.

MusicGal67 September 21, 2020 - 8:14 PM - 8:14 PM

🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
This Newsom is the biggest loser governor of all 50 states.
Does he even realize that people of all political views are sick and tired of him?!
It’s like he is trying to get CA citizens to hate him.
If he doesn’t get recalled, then it’ll definitely be fixed.
Teachers, students, small business owners, parents, truck drivers, hair stylists, personal trainers, etc. all hate Newsom.
He will not open up any small businesses for indoor dining.
He will not open up gyms.
We will have to wear masks forever as long as people keep voting for these idiots.

Wow, so we are forced to pay into a system when we are working because we are told that it is for our benefit when times are tough. Yet now that times are tough, the service isn’t there. So what the heck has everyone been paying for? I shouldn’t be too surprised that once again government isn’t living up to expectations.

Hanne Jeppesen September 21, 2020 - 9:06 PM - 9:06 PM

Granted the system has problems. Michal Finney of KGO has been reporting on it and being very critical, and he tends to be liberal.
However, I was furloughed for 3 months and I got my unemployment without any problems what so ever. So I wouldn’t say it is not there for us when we need. Having said that I know some people have had problems, so I hope it gets fixed soon. I feel for those who needs it badly and have to wait, not a good position to be in.

DrvrdadCA September 22, 2020 - 7:38 AM - 7:38 AM

Bob Foo – you do NOT pay into this system. Money is generated by employers only. Nothing is deducted from your paycheck to fund UI.

Tugboat September 22, 2020 - 3:14 PM - 3:14 PM

Absolutely correct Bob.

Tugboat September 22, 2020 - 3:16 PM - 3:16 PM

Nice thinking Hanne, as long as I got mine it’s good. Never mind others.

Gittyup September 21, 2020 - 8:46 PM - 8:46 PM

“We’re behind, so let’s just stop doing our jobs ’till we catch up.” Could you do this anywhere else except as an employee of Newsom’s California? Unbelievable.

Ricardoh September 21, 2020 - 9:18 PM - 9:18 PM

Think this is bad wait until the democrats are running everything on affirmative action.

The Fearless Spectator September 21, 2020 - 9:37 PM - 9:37 PM

Two weeks won’t solve the problem. At least he isn’t blaming racism and climate change for this problem. Although the week is still young………

Bay Area Native September 21, 2020 - 9:58 PM - 9:58 PM

People complain about not being able to collect unemployment; why not control what you can and go out and get another job. People might say it’s so hard to find a job right now, false – maybe not the “preferred” position but many places are hiring; retail, grocery stores, etc… it’s not a matter of availability, but rather worth ethic and actual energy put towards taking things into ones owns hands. Too many political people blaming someone else instead of making moves themselves. My humble opinion…

Andrew September 21, 2020 - 11:39 PM - 11:39 PM

@ bay area native

So basically what you’re saying is we should go out and get two jobs then. How is getting one retail job going to pay rent for a house in the Bay Area?

Rollo Tomasi September 22, 2020 - 10:57 AM - 10:57 AM

@Andrew:

There are many places to live that are less expensive than the Bay Area, some even within California. If you must live in the Bay Area, then you do what is necessary to accomplish that.

Hanne Jeppesen September 21, 2020 - 10:56 PM - 10:56 PM

Yes, some companies are hiring, but not enough to have everyone employed. Also it is very possible people are looking for a job, but hiring is not instant. Often you have to wait for a second interview and paperwork to clear. It can easily take 2 to 3 weeks from the first interview, and most of the time you have to apply to several companies before you get an interview. In that time frame, which could easily take up to 6 weeks, most need the unemployment check.
I believe most want to be gainfully employed, but that does not mean they instantly get a job.

Noj September 21, 2020 - 11:36 PM - 11:36 PM

We have a governor who can’t manage his forests or his administration.
But for some reason Californians think he’s peachy.

Same September 22, 2020 - 1:49 AM - 1:49 AM

Lol. This shows things are improving.

Kauai Mike September 22, 2020 - 4:56 AM - 4:56 AM

Often cited as the world’s 5th largest economy if independent, California demonstrates just how incompetent government actually is, no matter the size. The entire political apparatus is nothing more than a middle-class welfare system where the checks (as well as lifetime pensions & Cadillac medical plans) DO get handed out!

caskydiver September 22, 2020 - 7:08 PM - 7:08 PM

Don’t forget…big (economy) doesn’t mean best or good or well-run. It just means there’s a lot of people.

PO'd September 22, 2020 - 5:10 AM - 5:10 AM

Let me try to understand this insanity-
1- Huge backlog in processing unemployment checks and applications creating delays for checks going out.
2- Stop the state agency that is responsible for distributing the payouts and applications for 2 weeks.

Maybe I’m missing something here, but how does this help?.

Obamavirus September 22, 2020 - 6:17 AM - 6:17 AM

When Marxists get power they immediately start to run the system into the ground through incompetence and malfeasance
They are only concerned with enriching themselves and using their position to strike out against perceived enemies in the manner of third world tribal chieftains – think Zimbabwe
If measure 16 passes they will start to actively discriminate against white people in government hiring and promotion
The low-IQ affirmative action hires have reached critical mass in state gov

DVC STUDENT September 22, 2020 - 8:50 AM - 8:50 AM

People are really on here complaining. We’re in Cali one of the best economies in the world – go find a job you lazy bums and stop blaming government for your problems.

Hanne Jeppesen September 22, 2020 - 10:55 PM - 10:55 PM

You are being very judgmental without any proof. As I posted earlier, even when actively looking for a job, it does mean someone get hired instantly. You sign yourself as a student, which I take to mean you are fairly young and thus have not experienced the ups and downs that life throws at you, and sometime through no fault of your own, and no matter how hard you try, you are just plain out of luck. Granted if someone is persistent they will usually prevail. However, sometime all a person need is a little bit of helping hand to move ahead. When one is laid off because of the virus and not many companies are hiring, I don’t see how that is blaming the government. Back when unemployment was about 3% you would have had a point, but that is not the case now.

Sam Malone September 22, 2020 - 9:16 AM - 9:16 AM

I am most hopeful that the illegals and folks who are on the voting roles (including deceased members of our society) that should not be are caught and eliminated this election.

Please all-pay close attention to the liberal media’s BS that is being forced own our throats from all avenues and read the literature. Yes, it does take a bit of time but if we do not get California and the US back on track this time we are so past turning into a socialist society. Learn from our mistakes. It continues to dumbfound me that a lot of the folks I speak to do not vote these fools into lifetime free loading jobs yet they still get elected???

Vote with sanity as the bleeding hearts have vampirized us to death.

Thsi is not the time to raise taxes no matter how dire the situation. No one is bailing you or I out.

Help September 22, 2020 - 12:05 PM - 12:05 PM

It’s a shame how a lot of Californians can not reach anyone at edd for help. There’s a paycheck where my hours got reduced; not my fault and the online website says I made to much money??!! Like really? I’m missing 800 bucks from my paycheck . That’s not right !! They need to get it together . I’m an essential worker and this is ridiculous!

caskydiver September 22, 2020 - 7:06 PM - 7:06 PM

So you don’t have the capacity to process the applications, so you shut down accepting applications (increasing the backlog further) and scratch your head for two weeks to figure out why? What happens in two weeks? Will they need to shut down again to figure out why the backlog has increased again?

Yeah..this makes sense if you are a California Democrat, I guess.

AJR September 23, 2020 - 7:46 AM - 7:46 AM

I dont think you understand what stop accepting applications means…0 new apps while you are processing the current queue ensures you have some control over adressing the backlog, and working through the current backlog.

It makes sense…if you think for more than 30 seconds. caskydiver you should be better at math.
