Gov. Newsom Issues New Stay-At-Home Order For Regions That Fall Below 15% ICU Capacity

by CLAYCORD.com

Gov. Newsom issued a stay-at-home order for regions that fall below 15% ICU capacity.

The Bay Area region is expected to fall below that number by mid-December, Newsom said.

When that happens, people will be ordered to stop socializing with people outside their home, non-essential travel will be banned, and barbershops, nail salons, bars and wineries will have to close.

Retail businesses will be limited to 20% capacity, and restaurants will be take-out/delivery only.

Lol this is insane
There is always a surge in icu this time of year
I will not obey

Juanita Jones December 3, 2020 - 1:06 PM - 1:06 PM

You better not obey. You show them
😂😂😂😂😂😂
5 year olds have more common sense than you!!!!

Same December 3, 2020 - 1:40 PM - 1:40 PM

I think this should be permanent. Life was better when the Juanita’s and Maze’s were not out and about crowding me.

JRocks December 3, 2020 - 1:52 PM - 1:52 PM

The survival rate is 99.97%. If you have a pre-existing condition you can choose to stay home.

I am with Puffandstuff. I will not comply with this illegal order.

Juanita and Maze why don’t you just stay home and let those of us that have no common sense live our lives.

Debi December 3, 2020 - 2:17 PM - 2:17 PM

It’s good you can admit that there is always a surge of ICU cases this time of year. So now add that to an increase in covid cases and the extra spaces in the ICU that they will take up and you can understand how we can easily hit capacity! Then add holiday stress to financial and job loss stress which can also increase hypertension and heart attacks and no room in the ER or ICU for those people!! SO STAY HOME AND DON’T SPREAD COVID!!! Something we can actually do to help! Not to mention all of our healthcare workers who have been working nonstop for the last nine months at this intense level, putting their and their families lives at risk to save you and those you may know. I’m sure they would love to stay home right about now but they don’t get to because of selfish people who only care about themselves and their needs! We are all in this together! Let’s think of others and not just ourselves!!!

Ted December 3, 2020 - 2:19 PM - 2:19 PM

@JRocks
That’s right JRocks, I mean who really cares about the potential 35,000 (0.03%) people in contra costa county that could die. Let’s be honest, their family’s will be fine. Just get over it people, the economy is more important!
I pray you have this same energy if someone close to you losses their fight against covid. Not to mention the poor people on the front lines having to deal with men and women not wanting to comply. It’s not to much to ask for, everyone should do their part to save a life and or the mental state of our front line medical workers. Come on now!

Stewart December 3, 2020 - 3:02 PM - 3:02 PM

I keep seeing this 99.97% survival rate.

Where are people getting this number from?

Anonymous December 3, 2020 - 3:04 PM - 3:04 PM

Juanita, when you have Newsom, Kuehl, Breed, the Austin mayor dictating to the masses while on vacation in Mexico, the SJ, CA mayor, Lightfoot, Pritzker, and too many others to name, breaking their own rules, then it’s time to question how bad the virus is. Why aren’t they scared, and you are?

Are you getting unemployment, or working from home? Millions can’t and they’re being destroyed financially.

We take risks in life. Holing up in your house for nine months isn’t living.

Doh December 3, 2020 - 3:50 PM - 3:50 PM

Yesterday a new high of 2,600 deaths due to COVID-19. Remember when it was only 1,000 deaths per day? But some people still want to ignore any recommendations to try to lower infections.

JRocks December 3, 2020 - 4:14 PM - 4:14 PM

Ted you might want to check your math.

1.3 million people in Contra Costa County. The death rate is .03% not 3%. Using the the .03% projection 3900 people could die from covid. I am assuming that all of the covid deaths were actually from covid.

To date we’ve had 262 deaths in Contra Costa. 50% of those were in nursing homes. The threat to the regular citizen walking the street is almost 0%. I am not devaluing anyone’s life, but you have to look at this reasonably. The side effects of closing down our society will be felt long after this pandemic.

Savagette December 3, 2020 - 4:55 PM - 4:55 PM

@Any of you idiots that think these lockdowns are needed to “stop the spread”

All lockdowns do is ruin the small business that are forced to close. There is no real way to “lock people down” the lockdowns only prevent certain businesses and churches from operating. Why is it that churches have to close, gyms have to close yet strip clubs are allowed to stay open? Where is the “SCIENCE” in that. I don’t need a dictator governor to tell me whether it is safe for me to go get my hair done.

Kim B December 3, 2020 - 12:57 PM - 12:57 PM

I am sorry, but has anyone from his office actually looked at the data published daily from our county? Our numbers are WAY LOW. Are we so afraid that people will come here from other counties and use our hospitals? This makes no sense for our county.
What happened to the court saying that Newsome overstepped what he was allowed to do? How is he still able to make blanket decisions that should be made county by county?

DLo December 3, 2020 - 1:27 PM - 1:27 PM

Because it’s regional now, not county by county. While Contra Costa is fairly low, Santa Clara County is driving the surge in the Bay Area. They are almost out of ICU beds and I thought I heard this morning that San Mateo County is in a similar situation.

The court told Newsom he couldn’t issue unconstitutional orders. Out of a list of 27, only one order was unconstitutional.

Anonymous December 3, 2020 - 1:31 PM - 1:31 PM

So tell us what the ICU load is in our county?

Stewart December 3, 2020 - 3:04 PM - 3:04 PM

The reason it’s going to be treated as regional is because hospitals across the country are sending ICU overflow patients to other hospitals.

If Santa Clara hospitals run out of ICU capacity, patients are going to be sent to other counties’ hospitals.

Martinezmike December 3, 2020 - 1:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Steve is that a serious question? How about your living room?

Sancho Panza December 3, 2020 - 1:42 PM - 1:42 PM

@Steve~Remember back in April when the USNS Mercy came to Los Angeles and left a month later, scarcely used? That’s where we can put the beds…

Jason December 3, 2020 - 1:52 PM - 1:52 PM
CJRN December 3, 2020 - 1:57 PM - 1:57 PM

It’s not about not having enough ICU beds, but having enough staffed ICU beds. ICU nurses are a fairly specialized group of nurses and there just aren’t enough of well trained ICU nurses. Plus, you add into the mix that they also get sick, and we have even fewer nurses who can effectively work in an ICU

JoeMams December 3, 2020 - 2:15 PM - 2:15 PM

And how would you like to staff those extra beds?

Stewart December 3, 2020 - 3:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Beds aren’t necessarily the issue. It’s going to be staffing/

wondering... December 3, 2020 - 3:43 PM - 3:43 PM

I don’t understand the point of snide comments. We have had many months to work on training, staffing and reutilization. If you look at the CCC website our county has not come close to maximum occupancy this whole pandemic; plenty of time to reassess. It’s heartbreaking that so many are suffering due to lockdowns and instead of having serious conversations the one’s that feign the moral high ground seem the most flippant and cruelest of all.

Amateur Teacher December 3, 2020 - 7:17 PM - 7:17 PM

Man we are lucky to have so many hospital adminstrators in here that are able to predict and assess the needs of ICU beds without any information whatsoever. Bravo Covidiers. Keep looking out for that falling sky.

We’ll be fine. Let us live our lives and do our best.

Mom December 3, 2020 - 1:28 PM - 1:28 PM

So what exactly is the 15% number we should be looking for? Where my mathematicians at?!

Captain Bebops December 3, 2020 - 3:10 PM - 3:10 PM

I think it’s a bit of a weaselly pronouncement because apparently looking at CC stats ICU bed numbers are more of an estimate. It says approximately 163. With 27 covid patients in ICU that would be 16%. I assume they want it under 15% but wording was rather poor. And the number in beds goes up and down. Say some of that 27 go home today and no new covid cases fills up the beds then it would be in average under 15%. Looking at the stats there are currently 127 in ICU 100 are non-covid.

Life, Liberty and Property December 3, 2020 - 4:26 PM - 4:26 PM

I don’t math good. The number I come up with for Contra Costa is 25 ICU beds left.

Mom December 3, 2020 - 10:31 PM - 10:31 PM

Got my info from Kron4… the ICU capacity is 25.4% for the Bay Area region right now.

ManBearPig December 3, 2020 - 1:39 PM - 1:39 PM

I thought he was part of the “trust the science” crowd. The WHO has said lockdowns are ineffective, push people deeper into poverty, and should only be a last resort. But ohhhh let’s lockdown again for poops & giggles.

Recall this Joker. I’m astonished he keeps failing up to better jobs.

John December 3, 2020 - 1:43 PM - 1:43 PM

Gavin has about as much credibility as the leader of North Korea. I will continue to wear my mask, social distance, wash my hands, but I will give your Governor a Big Middle Finger to any stay at home order. Before any screaming Karen begins typing any rebuttal to what I wrote stating nonsense like: “Its people like you that cause these spikes.” Do some research honey.

Frijole December 3, 2020 - 2:31 PM - 2:31 PM

Chris exhibiting some textbook Karen behavior with this comment. We could be going to sporting events and having Christmas by now if we had good leadership at the federal level (see New Zealand).

The Fearless Spectator December 3, 2020 - 3:13 PM - 3:13 PM

That sounds reasonable. Gavin doesn’t bend the curve, he bends the rules. Perhaps if CA citizens assured him we are all approaching financial ruin, he could congratulate himself on achieving his goal, and open things back up.

Led December 3, 2020 - 5:28 PM - 5:28 PM

New Zealand … smh.

Yeah, if we were an island nation in the South Pacific with a small population that would accept military enforcement of stay at home orders and had an effective federal response, we would have almost Zero Covid. And then we would only have house arrest every once in a while!

Rollo Tomasi December 3, 2020 - 6:02 PM - 6:02 PM

@Frijole:

As I wrote on a prior thread awhile back it is time to keep asking cui bono? Who benefits from these unnecessary lockdowns and all of the negative ancillary effects? Who is positioning to take over the millions of destroyed small businesses, the commercial real estate buidlings which have been hollowed out due to retail store closures, the residential apartment buildings which have seem rents plummet during these ridiculous lockdowns?

Someone is positioned to benefit from these communist tactics. And it’s not the mom n pop small business owners who are being driven into bankruptcy all over the state.

Instead, look for silver spoon / silver tongued devils who benefit from nepotistic relationships and might own a winery or two and eat at $500 a plate restaurants while the serfs continue to struggle…

Cui bono, indeed.

Dr. Jellyfinger December 4, 2020 - 7:20 AM - 7:20 AM

It’s amazing how many people “will not obey” then complain why things are the way they are. Maybe if people’s egos weren’t so full of themselves, we’d be in a much better place .. but .. most people here have to only care about themselves — so this will only continue to get worse and not better until people grow up for once. *shrug*

Rollo Tomasi December 3, 2020 - 5:53 PM - 5:53 PM

Crawl under your bed and stay there. That way you’ll be safe.

Captain Bebops December 3, 2020 - 3:30 PM - 3:30 PM

I think a better wording would have been “when goes above 85% of ICU capacity”. And correct, in this winter weather we are having there will be more people in the ICU without covid.

Charlie December 3, 2020 - 3:41 PM - 3:41 PM

I’m not able to find the answer to this: Is it 15% total ICU beds or 15% total the number of beds allocated to Covid patients? For instance, let’s say Contra Costa County has 100 (random guess) total ICU beds available. 20 of those are allocated for Covid patients. When there are 3 Covid ICU beds available then that constitutes 15%?

Chuq December 4, 2020 - 1:14 AM - 1:14 AM

I believe it means hospitals have less than 15% of their ICU beds left unoccupied.

Frustrated December 3, 2020 - 4:13 PM - 4:13 PM

Regardless of whether or not you agree with the numbers/ reporting…. it’s really not that hard to be safe for yourself and others. It makes sense that these things help. PLEASE wear a mask, social distance when appropriate and wash your hands… IT’S DEFINITELY WORTH A TRY.. and better than shutting down.

parent December 3, 2020 - 4:18 PM - 4:18 PM

A big fat no for me. When you can establish a goal post that does not move on your whim, we can move towards it but until then, I will no longer follow your ‘orders’. I do not feel that that are legal or moral, and as a citizen of this FREE state and country, I am not obligated to follow them.

Why are we being lumped in with a county that is 80 miles from us, makes no sense. Hospital transfers, really? Like your prison transfer that spread COVID?

Wearing a mask outside when no one is around you is NOT necessary. There is no way you can convince me that it is.

This has killed many businesses, individuals and families … and I do not mean COVID. I mean the reaction and tyranny inspired dictates. They remind me of the Harry Potter movie and the Ministry of Magic rules. No this, no that … no whatever …

Many of you jump on the fact that we could have a 1,000 deaths in CCC alone … okay, how many of you are concerned with the homeless? The addicts? You can say that is not contagious, but really? Grow up homeless, grow up with an addict .. you are likely to become one yourself. It may not be contagious in the traditional sense, but it is contagious. How many businesses need to go under, what is the unemployment rate, what is the suicide rate, the mental abuse on the children from joke learning, … what is the number you are willing to accept before you wake up and see the impact?

Lock downs kill people by increasing depression and suicidal thoughts. People kill themselves and others because of this … This is NOT JUST ABOUT COVID. Many of you willing to give up your rights and accept a dictator, I am not one that will.

I will not go quietly into the night.

It is impossible to compare an island that is 1.5 times smaller than the state of California with a population that is 2.6 million less than the just the 9 Bay Area Counties with a county that is 3.797 million mi² with a total population of 328 million.

Not to mention, we don’t operate under New Zealand law and the US Constitution prohibits the Federal Government from declaring a national lockdown.

Other than that, great point.
