The temple was originally established in a small wood framed house in San Francisco, California, way back in 1957, by an American born Hindu guru, Sivaya SubramuniyaSwami. It may have been the first Hindu Temple to be opened in America that was beyond the scope of the various Vedanta centers that existed at that time.
Offering Pujas to murtis of Ganesha, Muruga and Shiva, it was founded on the traditions of Saiva Siddhanta and known as the Palaniswami Sivan Temple. It quickly became a popular site for the ever growing populace of newly arriving Hindus, some of whom personally knew of the Sage from Sri Lanka, YogaSwami, who initiated the American Guru. grow over the years, and on traditional festival days, the small temple could hardly accomodate the crowd of devotees. In 1988, to better facilitate the Hindu community, the temple was moved to a larger site in Concord, CA. The site was chosen due to availability and the fact that it had always been a place of worship.
First owned by the Lutherans and later by the Greek Orthodox, structures on the site include the temple proper with a social hall in the basement, a separate building that’s used as an office and classrooms, and a private residence for the Priests.
Due to his efforts to build an orthodox temple on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, SubramuniyaSwami decided to sell the temple in Concord to the local Hindu Community in 1995. The Saiva Siddhanta Ashram was incorporated as a non-profit organization, purchased the temple in May, and changed the name to Shiva Murugan Temple.
The Temple Management has, till date, brought three Priests from India to oversee the daily rituals. The first few years have been most generally spent in maintaining the buildings and a dependable schedule of religious events. The Board of Directors continues to look for ways to enhance the temple’s services to the Hindu community by considering the expansion of Temple structure, religious and cultural services.

Unless I missed it there is no mention of parking.
A quick search of development projects on the City’s website and you can find the project documents. The project conforms to the City’s parking requirements as outlined in the Municipal Code.

The parking situation is out of control. They fill the street, block driveways and even park in the driveways. The patrons of this temple are disrespectful of the people who live here. Yes the building is beautiful but the parking situation needs to be fixed. At times I have to tell them to move from my driveway just so I can park at my own home which is ridiculous.

When this was before the Concord City Council, many of the residents that live in the single family homes on Second Street were at the meeting and complained about the parking problems that this temple has caused on this street.

They also owned several other properties in the vicinity of the temple that the Concord City Council questioned what their intention was for these other properties.

Also, when this was before the Concord City Council for approval the temple spokesman sold this temple as a landmark and tourist destination “because many people believe these temples are UFO’s.”

I know a couple who attend services at the Shiva Murugan Temple.
We are welcomed to visit but have not yet.
The detail work, from what I gather, is also being done by artists in their field from India.
Looking forward to seeing it done with all the painted detail too.

If you’re talking about the old Safeway/Blockbuster lot bordered by East Street, Willow Pass Road, Port Chicago Highway, and Concord Boulevard it is an affordable housing project. It will not have enough parking, as it will have fewer parking spaces than units built. Parking will average about 3/4 of a space per unit.

I’ve seen it from the Safeway parking lot on the Concord Blvd side. It looks pretty cool it’s refreshing from the super boring look most new buildings have in town. Thanks for the info.
The temple building is being manufactured in India as carved stone blocks which are then shipped to Concord for assembly.
@Bill – there will be parking but at present the parking lot has been used for storage of the blocks and other construction materials prior to them being fitted into the building.
Historically, they never had a lot of parking and do not need it. Hindus do not have a weekly service or other regular times when they gather. Most of the religious observance is conducted in the home among family members and is something people try to be mindful of when out and about. Most Hindus visit temples, some more regular than others, but it’s not something that’s central to their lives.
There’s times when I have driven by there, and there’s a lot of people, perhaps they carpool.
I think many of them take BART or other public transportation as I will see many groups walking towards the temple from all directions. CPD will escort them across Concord Blvd, at the canal trail.
I bank with the credit union. their branch is on Bancroft by CVS in Walnut Creek. However, since I’m not close to that location I often use Unify, which is right next to the Temple being build. It seems like it has been under construction for a long time. I think it will look beautiful when done, however it seems out of place in that location. Not sure what they are going to do about parking, Unify have signs all over their parking area “No Temple parking”. I think that have been an issue in the past, because I remember trying to withdraw money and there were no parking, not sure if Unify had given them permission on the week end to park there, but certainly not the case anymore.
If I remember correctly (as someone who frequents this temple and did some outreach to help raise money for the new construction), the current building will be demolished once the new building is complete and that area will be turned into parking

As a rule, I enjoy architecture of any stripe. Tromping through Oakland, Berkeley, SF, Seattle, more… This structure is beautiful in my book. Even if out of place. Way more pleasant than what WC got. Haha, but I like that one too. Very stark, alien. Religious buildings are always interesting.

They have signs al over the nieghborhood telling these people not to park on other peoples property.They constanlty and illegally blocking the sidewalk and the street with private cars and tape,and there are one too many bulidings on their property and are breaking Concord zoning laws.They moved this whole operation from San Fransisco because….San Fransisco.

I think they are hoping to take over the block,but a house across the street is for rent for $4000 a month for 3 bedrooms and no garage ,so this is an area that people are not going to sell cheap,or sell at all.
What is that neighborhood? Anyone living in a house in that area is considered basically a hold out your house is worth way more than you living there. You might as well sell it and move. A neighborhood is a place where your kids can play in the street and you can ride a bike around the block. That street is not a neighborhood based on that criteria.
What fits that neighborhood? Homeless camps and 50% blight? Anything new in that neighborhood is an improvement
I kind of agree. However the building is unusual, so not sure where it would fit. We have religious freedom in this country, which l assume to mean any religion have a right to have their own place of worship.

Well, OK…….Cool looking Temple, but none of that Kali cult stuff or Khalsa Sikhs packing knives… I’m all for freedom of religion but there has to be limits.
