Four Martinez police officers shot and killed a person after responding to a report of a burglary at a cannabis dispensary early Friday morning, police and the state attorney general’s office said.

The shooting occurred shortly after 3:30 a.m. when officers responded to an alarm set off at the Velvet dispensary at 4808 Sunrise Drive. Police were told multiple people and two vehicles were at the business, Martinez Police Chief Andrew White said in a news release.

White said in the news release that after officers arrived, “one of the vehicles, described as a white SUV, fled the scene.

Officers broadcast that shots were fired and there was an assault on an officer. The second vehicle attempted to flee and then crashed into a fire hydrant. The two occupants of the vehicle were transported to the hospital.”

The initial news release did not specify who fired shots, but White later clarified that four officers opened fire and that one of the people taken to the hospital died. The names of the person who died and the four officers were not immediately available, and police did not provide the condition of the other person hospitalized.

The police chief said the California Department of Justice was notified of the shooting and is leading the investigation in accordance with Assembly Bill 1506, a law that requires the state to investigate all police shootings that result in the death of an unarmed civilian.

The four officers who opened fire have been placed on administrative leave, White said.

White said an officer was also taken to a hospital for what is believed to be a minor injury, but the chief did not clarify how the officer was injured.

Here we go again. Break the law, fight the cops and the cops are in trouble. If you can’t see what this is leading to you are not seeing.

Since person died in commission of a crime all can br charged with murder,
that is IF this county had a DA.
.
If there is no threat of incarceration,
there is no deterrence to criminal behavior

.
But DEMs don’t want criminal in State Prisons because it costs state $128,000 per year.
Takes money away from their pet fantasy projects, like the choo-choo to nowhere.

Oh, please August 19, 2023 - 8:20 PM - 8:20 PM

Since when have dems cared about spending other people’s money??? Criminals should have to pay for their own incarceration through hard labor. That it costs so much to house these fools is BECAUSE of dems. Now we are so soft that we must pay for criminals to have TVs and heaven forbid they work.

I stand with the Police.

Criminals don’t respect anything. When someone commits a crime, they should expect to be caught, punished, or perhaps killed. It’s the consequences of criminal activity. There is no excuse for crime.

No mention of any suspects pointing a firearm , the dead guy probably tried to run over cops with his car.

True and if you’ve noticed this journalist has done nothing but sensationalize the situation for more people to hate the men and women in blue. It is really sad that they’re calling this person a civilian he was a criminal point-blank call it like it is. Unarmed well he wasn’t unarmed…. Have we ever heard the expression or told our kids when they get into a car? It is a loaded weapon and can kill hello!!! Bring back, normalcy and critical thinking…Way to go BLUE!

Great job cops. Clean up the trash. You know the grade school picture will show up next to John Burris in the upcoming lawsuit. Diana Becton is thinking up ways to go after the cops.

Too bad the population at large here in CCC didn’t vote out the radical marxist slime of DA Becton who loves to support the violent criminals at the cost of societal order. The toilet needed to be flushed here long ago. Thank you to the all the law enforcement agencies here keeping us safe.

The newspapers wrote the fired upon thieves tried to run over the police officers and drew fire because of that.
