The Macy’s flagship store at Union Square in San Francisco is closing as part of the department store chain’s plans to close about 150 stores nationwide.
Macy’s on Tuesday announced the plans to close about 150 “underproductive” locations by 2026, including about 50 by the end of this fiscal year. It’s unknown if the Concord store is on the closure list.
“The city will continue to work closely with Macy’s and any potential new owner to ensure this iconic location continues to serve San Francisco for decades to come. I’m also continuing to talk to leaders in retail, business, and real estate about how we can continue to focus on the long-term success of this site and others,” San Francisco Mayor London Breed said.
The planned closure is the latest hit to the retail industry in San Francisco. Last June, Westfield announced it was giving up its mall along Market Street that at 1.2 million square feet is the largest shopping center in the city.

Most stores in once beautiful Union Square are boarded up with armed guards and you have to get buzzed in because all the doors are locked!!! At least it was the last time I tried to shop there. Got in my car and left….
Fox News is going to love running with this. Guess most people would rather go to Broadway Plaza or Stanford Shopping Mall and who can blame them. You walk by a lot fewer open drug markets in Walnut Creek and Palo Alto (at least for now).
When the downtown stores fold, the shoplifting organizations will flood the suburban
locations, as they have begun to, and put alot of pressure on towns like WC and Palo

Probably because these kind of stores don’t fit into “the Great Reset” and management doesn’t want to get stuck with them and unsold inventory. I think that is happening to business in general. Of course “the Great Reset” could bomb (and most likely will). Just a thought…. 😎
I remember shopping there during Christmas many years and years ago when I worked in the city. Always kind of had the feel of being in a movie with all the decorations and folks dressed up a bit. It’s sad now … life moves on.

Macy’s is closing about 30% of their stores. They have 15 or so locations in the Bay Area so say 4-5 locations are on the chopping block. Two locations (San Mateo and Pleasanton) are furniture only and can be consolidated with the main store nearby.
Due to overlapping proximity Concord/Walnut Creek (6 miles), San Leandro/Hayward (5 miles), and the two Santa Rosa stores (2 miles) are on the chopping block.
The shift to e-commerce is real. The new technology allows app-based fittings based on just a selfie. If you ain’t running with it you’d better run from it!
I’d have expected the Sun Valley location to shutter before the SF flagship. That decrepit mall feels post apocalyptic. Union Square still has foot traffic and character.
No surprise… and London is still saying how SF is on the upswing… yeah right… get a grip on reality … she remains optimistic about the staying… uh huh ,, they own the property and have 25% of Union Plaza – they’re selling it and bailing … I heard one spokesperson say 3 reasons – “safety, theft, and cleanliness”

The Macy’s in San Leandro is slated to close in March and is running “going out of business” sales now. Newark is likely to be closed in 2024 as well since most of NewPark Mall is empty now.

You do know Macy’s is closing 150 stores across the country. They have already closed 130 store nation wide. This has ZERO to do with Gavin or any politician and more to do with a failing, out of date business model.
Personally if I want a nice high end shopping experience I go to Nordstroms and not Macy’s as Macy’s lost all of it’s “upscale” feel 20+ years ago

WC is one Nordstroms best performing stores. Unlike Macy’s they didn’t buy up.other companies and over expand. Sadly every store Macy’s bought they ruined such as the Bon Marche in Seattle. The Bin Marche was was up their with Nordstroms as far as quality & service. Macy’s bought them out & turned it to crap.
That’s what I’m saying, Department stores (even Nordstrom) are not relevant today. What Dayton-Hudson did to all of their regional chains was a huge mistake they never should have changed the branding to “Macy’s” trying to create a national chain out of those beloved regional brands (who misses Emporium or Capwell’s) regional brands may have had a chance. National ones not so much.
Sad. We used to always go over to The City between Thanksgiving and Christmas to enjoy the decorations and have a nice Lunch. Did it last year and it was just depressing. Little foot traffic, empty stores around Union Square and kind of a bleak feeling.

The Sun Valley Mall in Concord has become a center of shoplifting and organized crime. Makes sense for Macy’s to close that one too. Sun Valley Mall is becoming an increasingly dangerous place to shop.
The mall is busy, Macy’s is busy most days. Stores are becoming more proactive when it comes to theft. Macy’s has a place in the retail world. I haven’t been to Nordstrom in years, except for Nordstrom’s Rack, although I rarely buy anything there. I get better deal and choices where I work. When I did shop at Nordstrom’s I found their selection and prices were not to my liking. Penny and Sears are too oldfashion, Bloomingdale’s and Neiman Marcus too pricey, Macy is in the middle, still selling designer’s like Coach, Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren (depends on stores, Walnut Creek and Stanford have more designers then some other stores), several of their brands are good quality for the money, Karen Scott, Inc, Style and Co. Tommy Hilfiger. The closing of the San Francisco store seem to have to do with what is going on downtown, Nordstrom’s left, the stores feed off one another, when one leaves it hurts the other one, since people have less incententive to go there, if their choices are limited.
Hanne… you should take a stroll through Sun Valley Mall on your break and see what’s really going on there. Many are afraid to even shop there anymor.e.
Macys SV will be next! The whole Mall will be torn down. eventually . La Veranda has many places to work and a better atmosphere for shopping.
I understand and admire your loyalty to Macys, but when they shudder their doors without warning you will change your views.
I do go out in the mall, I occassionally get a Starbucks, or a yoghurt. Sometimes when I’m in Macy’s women I’m being send to the mens, which I by Sears. Yes, there are shoplifting, and some rowdy teenager at times, they were riding bikes in the store and mall, both our security and mall security got rid of them. There were a group of teenage boys in our bedding department, being loud, and thought it was fun to prop themselves down on the display beds. I went over to them and asked them firmly and politely to stop. Basically I said the beds were for display and not real beds and they might collapse when someone sits one them. They looked embarrassed apologized and left the store. When I go out in the mall, I see plenty of families shopping, families with strollers, kids in tow. I think Aunt Barbara is painting too bleack a picture. Many stores have their own security, and mall security is out in the open, wearing a uniform and getting around on scooters. I agree the Mall is much different than when I first starting going there in 1998, when I had moved to Benicia. At that times there were a Dalton Bookstore, don’t remember the other stores, mostly I went there to go to Macy’s, but it is still a busy viable mall. At Christmas time they have the Santa Claus for the kids, and there were always a line.
Nothing to do with crime, Newsom or whatever else ails you, it’s all about keyboard shopping with the likes of Amazon and co.
When Sears Fine Foods owner Al Boyajian died and the son took over, I watched it go downhill. That was the beginning of the demise of the old lovable charming SF
