The City of Martinez announced the commencement of its Diversity and Cultural Commission, a milestone reflecting the commitment of the City to the implementation of its Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) Roadmap. It will play a key role in advising the City Council on matters related to the DEIB Roadmap, as well as in planning inclusive events, conducting community listening sessions, and providing feedback on City outreach and communications.

The Commission held its first official meeting on May 1, 2025. This inaugural meeting included the induction of new Commission members with their oath of office, and the establishment of the Chair and Vice-Chair positions for the coming year. Commission members include Loraine Brittingham, Luka Afonine, Vana Tran, Steeve Boulingui, Dr. Tracey Edwards Moore, Gwyneth Gilkey, and Marcos Barajas, with alternate members Samar Sobhy and Steve Welch. Dr. Moore was elected by the Commission as Chair, and Ms. Gilkey was elected Vice-Chair.

The Commission will begin its work in the coming months, meeting quarterly to advance initiatives and provide a consistent forum for ongoing discussions, with opportunities for community involvement, meetings, and initiatives to be announced as the Commission gets underway.

A waste of time and money.I think the majority of people are tired of these simple thinking commissons trying to manage everyone’s lives and their communities. They will create more racism and division. But that is what liberals always do.

Martinez behind the times. DEI is out of fashion and in disfavor especially after deadly incidents have occurred due to the person responsible being under experienced.

I will not go to Martinez after this,i did very rarely, and living there years ago was awful. What the hell are they doing? Why they think they need this? The mural turned the city woke.I feel bad for those of you living there powerless to the ciounty sear/city that thinks it can just do anything at your expense and safety.

All they did is create jobs and that is all these things are ever for. and to buy lunches “for free” till they get audited,if ever.No citizens voyed this in,and most if not all of the homeless are caucasian. Why arent they working on the screaming lashing out homeless that they have in Martinez? They in a class all their own..A right looney bunch.

Instead how about a ‘parks and roads beautification’ committee? It could be a milestone reflecting the commitment of the City to the implementation beautiful parks and roads Roadmap. It will play a key role in advising the City Council on matters related to the beautiful parks and roads Roadmap, as well as in planning inclusive events, conducting community listening sessions, and providing feedback on City outreach and communications. At least we could feel like we belong on the roads or in the parks.

Exactly. Martinez has a lot going for it – parks, the marina, historicity, baseball and bocce courts. It had been diverse and working class for decades. Now it’s turning woke and gentrified.

More stupid crap, only degrades the participants as they will be referred to as the DEI hire.

How about they discuss the concept of meritocracy.
And how to get it.

Water and oil never mix,but it is diverse.

This merely an invitation to those they say they representing to come to Martinez and create work for the police, courts, jail, and city clean up crew.I guess this is their way of keeping the wheel turning in Martinez by taking a lesson from San Fransisco. They should just make t-shirts that have a logo saying “I promise we are not racist” and having all members of Martinez wear them,or be considered a racist by all. This would make the city very inviting and prove there is no racism in Martinez 🙁
