Ash is falling and the sky is dark in Contra Costa County today due to the surrounding wildfires in California.

The air quality index, as of 8:50 a.m., is at 160 in Contra Costa County, which is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. The index is expected to exceed 200 today, so stay inside as much as possible.

My white Toyota Tacoma is now a Black Tacoma 🙁
Just washed it off,again…..

Its actually getting darker each hour like in the morning it was orange now its more brown Yikes

So eerie outside. It is one for the books. Stay safe all.

If you want to see why we are getting the smoke overhead, go to:

https://www.windy.com/?37.953,-122.050,9

At the R.H. edge of the screen there is a slider to change the altitude of the wind you are viewing. You will see a river of air coming down from the Redding area carrying the smoke and we have a low pressure area directly over us with no wind.

Great site, thank you. 👍

Thanks, exactly why I turned in.

Who turned off the sun. Never have seen anything like this ever.

It’s almost 10 am and the streetlights are still on. We normally close our blinds in the east facing kitchen as light just floods in on a summer morning. Now I have the lights on instead. Maybe I’ll just go back to bed….

I turned on the news to find out exactly where the fires are. KRON 4 spent 40 minutes telling us how dark and orange the sky is. I mean, I already know what the sky looks like, I have windows, I’m able to see it. But they just kept at it, over, and over, talking about the sky and didn’t report any news at all.
I finally switched over to KTVU 2, and within 5 minutes I knew where the fires are.

Ash Wednesday Again?! How many times are we going to ‘celebrate it this year?

And how about this for irony…the city street sweeper is making its way through the neighborhood this morning.

Here’s a time lapse GIF from NWS Bay Area showing why we are getting inundated with smoke:

https://twitter.com/NWSBayArea/status/1303359230267863043

You can see at least three large fires with smoke drifting our way

This is the weirdest day I have ever seen.

I’m concerned about the people who are already having depression concerns.

I hope people who need help seek help.

Thank you for posting this, I feel the same way.

I’ve seen enough to know I don’t want to live on Mars. I need blue sky.

@Joatmeal….Believe me, the Martians don’t want you there either. I hear they’re building a force field to keep Earthlings out so we don’t suck up all their tax money and social entitlements. Martians aren’t stupid ya know!

– Way to turn this post into a political statement. Claycord is turning into our local Fox opinion channel.

I think it’s long passed time we stop calling the people that prevent controlled burns and the clearing of dead forest “environmentalists”.

They are not for the environment at all. They’re short sited and ignorant. They’re crazy people pretending to be smart.

No more of this crap. It’s time we start controlled burns and clearing out dead forest year round.

These crazy people blame lack of rain. That’s their plan. Hope it rains enough to prevent fires. What kind of asinine plan is that? We don’t control weather, but we control what we can do. So WE CLEAR STUFF OUT using our hands and brains like the humans we are. We don’t sit around and wait for rain to save us. We use preventative measures using this thing called a BRAIN to think and plan ahead.

These idiots stopping preventative measures either need to be charged with gross negligence or removed from their positions immediately.

Any lawsuits to prevent forest clearing and controlled burns need to be quashed and those filing the lawsuits shamed into exile.

NO MORE OF THIS. EVER. AGAIN.

@ L0L Sound logic. Thank you.

I wonder how much solar or wind energy we are producing today… renewable energy, brought to you by the same brainless “environmentalists”.

What, you’re going to bring logic into this??

What state do you think this is?? (sarcasm)

At work today our night time outdoor lighting, controlled by a photocell did not turn off until 11 AM.

As to sound logic, this is California, it does not exist here and hasn’t for well over a decade.

Take a look at this, Mars vs CA
https://dailytimewaster.blogspot.com/2020/09/one-is-mars-other-is-california-today.html

THIS is sound logic,
‘Biggest wildfire in Arizona history couldn’t burn Fort Apache Reservation’ , ‘Managing tribal forest helped stop Wallow Fire at reservation’.

Time is long past to vote liberals out of CA government and restore common sense.

It looked just like this right after Lucifer was elected governor: abolish all the schools and churches under the auspices of a virus which we could have been done with if it hadn’t been for the lockdown.

Huh?

Then the dinosaurs looked at the dark sky after the asteroid hit and said: I don’t care about climate change ….

No. They said, “I know I shouldn’t have ben voting for Democrats!”.

Odd that these fires are on Federal Lands with law and order Republican president in office.

This is sort of a taste of what it was like when Krakatoa went off. If the Yellowstone volcano goes off it could be worse than this and last a couple of years. We don’t even want to think of another meteor like the one that went into the Gulf of Mexico.
I will now get into my rant about Cal Fire. No doubt they are working their butts of and risking their lives. It is not good enough. Once a fire is allowed to grow they can’t contain it. Fires have to be put out before they are allowed to grow. The first thing we need is fire lookouts that cover every inch of the state. They need whatever tech they can get to detect fires. Every fire no matter the size has to be hit with an aerial bombardment as fast as possible. Right now the state has a dozen aircraft that can deliver about 1900 gallons per drop. A 747 can drop 19,000 gallons per drop. that is ten times more. There is only one 747 bomber in California and it belongs to a private company. The state needs twenty 747s dispersed around the state and they need to be ready to fly like we were being attacked by enemy aircraft and the 747s were our fighter jets. You say it would cost too much. Well wait until the costs are added up in damage and fighting what is going on now. What is the price of a ancient redwood forest? What is the cost of lives lost?

What we need is proper vegetation management. It would go a long way toward preventing wildfires of this magnitude.

Chuckie’s Wife If we had every resident of San Francisco raking up the forests we would still need more people. We would then need to weed out trees so they are not close to each other. Forests are forests.

This is so depressing. I almost went back to sleep this morning as I figured it was still 5AM. While I’m grateful we don’t have fire lapping at our door like so many others, between how I feel about CA governance and now, this dystopian end-of-days sky – I am starting to wonder if going back home to NY is a better idea (and things are going to hell there, too)! In the meantime, I will listen to a soundtrack today that includes Bowie ‘Life on Mars’, Blind Faith ‘Had to Cry Today’ and Siouxie and the Banshees ‘Cities of Dust’. Stay safe, my neighbors.

I woke up this morning and looked through the obscure bathroom window and thought the neighbor’s house was burning. That was weird.

To all firefighters and their families. Thank you for all you are doing and thank you families for the time your loved ones are in harms way. Keeping you in prayers & thoughts as always.

AMEN to that!

Rainy ash subtly all over my porch and property. Not feeling real comfortable about it right now. Will stay on top of. Reminds me of what we dealt with aft Mt St Helen’s blew and I was an Engineer Tech at Intel in Livermore back then had to close that facility.

I am waiting for the Zombies to attack. Or an announcement that yes we have been nuked. This is unbelievable. The worst mismanagement of a state ever. Brought to you by California Dems who really don’t have the skills needed to run a State. Yes I went there.

How is this the state goverment fault when most of the lands burning are under the control of the US Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management – both of which are federal agencies?

Could you please explain how the state government could have stopped the lightning storm that started these fires???

Joatmeal Under my plan they couldn’t have stopped them all but they could have stopped a couple and they could have easily stopped fires like the one from the gender reveal.

@Joatmeal,
Obviously, the government can’t prevent lightning storms. But proper forest management could have made the resulting fires much less severe. And it didn’t suddenly get so bad in the last few years, so Trump has very little to do with it.

@Chicken Little – You do realize the Fire Lookout buildings in California have been around since the early 1900’s, don’t you? Fire suppression was considered proper forest management long before the current administration took office. The policies started to change in the 1970’s, but it takes many decades to undo the damage. However, we could raise taxes to expedite “proper forest management”. But raising taxes would only further your agenda to recall Newsom.

This grey orange sky makes me think about the movie The Road, 2009 version with Virgo Mortensen.

The correct spelling is Viggo Mortensen. He is a fellow Dane. My Dad’s name was Kristian Viggo Jeppesen.

I saw three vampires flying around outside. Spooky!!

Of course the sky is orange.
