Gov. Newsom Unveils New State Water Strategy At Contra Costa Treatment Plant

By Tony Hicks – California Gov. Gavin Newsom was at the Antioch Water Treatment Plant on Thursday to announce new measures to store and save water in his parched state. But first he stopped at a table set up for him to taste the water treated at the plant.

He held up his glass and asked a worker what signs indicated the treated Delta water was safe for executive consumption. “Clarity? Odor?”

A worker said yes, then Newsom asked, “How’s the odor to you?”

He drank before hearing the answer, indicating with an official nod: The Antioch plant is obviously doing its job.

Framed by construction of the new $110 million Antioch Brackish Water Desalination Project, Newsom and other officials announced a new strategy to fight climate change’s effect on California’s dwindling water supply during the state’s worst drought in 1,200 years.

“We’re here to highlight with a renewed sense of urgency, truly the moment we’re in,” Newsom said. “The last few years … the hydrology of the state has begun to change pretty significantly. The science and the data leads us to now understand we will lose 10 percent of our water supply by 2040.”

“As a result of that deeper understanding, we have a new sense of urgency to address this issue head on.”

The actions are outlined in a 19-page document called “California’s Water Supply Strategy – Adapting to a Hotter, Drier Future” that calls for investing in new sources of water supply, accelerating projects and modernizing state water management through new technology.

The strategy prioritizes capturing, recycling, desalinating, and conserving more water. It aims to create more storage space for up to 4 million acre-feet of water to capitalize on the big storms that now provide so much of the state’s water.

It also aims to double the state’s recycled and reused water to at least 800,000 acre-feet of water per year by 2030, freeing up 500,000 acre-feet of water through more efficient use and conservation. It would also make new water available by capturing stormwater and desalinating ocean water and salty water in groundwater basins, making the most of high flows during storms.

Newsom said a key aspect of the plan is streamlining the environmental permitting process through executive orders and legislation to keep up with climate change. The plan aims to fast-track at least seven water storage projects.

“The time to get these damn projects is ridiculous; It’s absurd. It’s reasonably comedic,” Newsom said. “In so many ways the world we invented from an environmental perspective is now getting in the way of moving these projects forward.”

Newsom pointed out the state already has 37 desalination plants up and running — 14 treating sea water and 23 treating brackish water from other sources like the one in Antioch, which will provide up to 30 percent of the city’s water. Expect more desalination in the future, he said.

“The reality is we need to be more creative, and we need to be more aggressive,” Newsom said.”

He called recent statewide conservation numbers are encouraging and statewide water mandates unlikely.

That, and other measures he didn’t name, are being reserved in a “break the glass” emergency scenarios.

After drinking the treated stinky delta water. Newsom said…he caught a fish, “This Big! “

How convenient, free TV face time.

The Central San water treatment plant on Imhoff discharges about 28 million gallons a day into the Bay. Piping that water to the CCWD treatment plant to make it potable would help CCWD customers. When we’re parched and dying of thirst is too late to address the need. The time is now. Astronauts drink recycled water; so can we.

SAM August 12, 2022 - 5:06 AM

You have no idea what you’re talking about. My God, get off the internet phil.

Sam August 11, 2022 - 9:39 PM

Did he get monkeypox?

SAM August 12, 2022 - 5:07 AM

Dude IS the monkey pox.

Plinko August 11, 2022 - 9:56 PM

This guy/girl is the epitome of a douche bag.
Why do people follow his lead? I really wouldn’t call it lead because he’s so pathetic, but don’t know another word.

inmotion August 11, 2022 - 11:08 PM

…but you’ll happily drink and use the water.

Ray August 11, 2022 - 11:40 PM

Phil…..
YOU First with recycled astronaut urine.

nytemuvr August 12, 2022 - 2:35 AM

@Ray….Might be a good time to invest in Tang stocks….I always wondered where that name came from, must be the taste when mixed with urine?….don’t even want to know what Space Food Sticks are made of.

Randy August 12, 2022 - 7:02 AM

He didn’t have anything to do with it – it was in the works before him – let’s see what he does…. or is it all talk? again

Fee August 12, 2022 - 9:46 AM

Correct. Antioch had this planned some years ago. Just a photo opp for the Gov and Mayor. Ironically, I believe the California Coastal Commission outlawed Desal plants so the $8B in infrastructure isn’t going to any type of projects like this in their jurisdiction. Brackish water and the delta maybe but not along the coast for sure.

Obamavirus August 12, 2022 - 7:07 AM

The Marxists really get a thrill about making people drink recycled toilet water. The token desalination plants are not the true focus, the recycled waste water is. I can’t think of a better way to encourage a few ( tens of?) million more people to leave the state. As the middle class people leave the state only the poor, ignorant immigrants will be left to be crowded into the large cities, living in tiny, box apartments and living on gov welfare and under constant surveillance and genetic experimentation through forced vaccinations. Look at UN Agenda 2030. WEF agenda for same year “ own nothing and be happy” (and drink urine water) Meanwhile, the Sierra forests will be cut down so a few billionaires can cash out, while the idiots cluck their tongues about “social justice”

SAM August 12, 2022 - 7:23 AM

They truly do get a thrill off making them drink toilet water, wearing masks and teaching kids to be transgender. These are truly sick people. They are trying to end the world.

gebertx August 12, 2022 - 7:37 AM

I would bet somewhere buried in the massive legislation documents is authority for him to fast track the Peripheral Canal (or what ever they’re calling it these Days), Damn the Delta, there-be Voters in Southern California

How anyone voted for this slimeball I don’t get. He is a tyrannical pile of excrement that has destroyed CA economy & littered the streets with urine & feces. Criminals run rampant while citizens are just supposed to sit back and take it. He also wants to let all the criminals out of jail to live their best life at our expense. Absolutely stunned people stand behind this gigantic A-hole

Don’t even go to the guided tour by capitol police on J6 as a rebuttal…Maga lunatics haven’t done anything remotely close to you and your kind.

Concord74 August 12, 2022 - 8:47 AM

Is that glass really recycled water that he drank? Did anyone see where that glass of water came from? For all we know, it is probably “Crystal Springs”!

What a malarky and BS!!!!

Glen223 August 12, 2022 - 9:17 AM

It was a special delivery from the French Laundry.

Reasonable August 12, 2022 - 9:03 AM

Wonder when Texas will start busing illegal aliens to Cali. After all didn’t Newscum make this a Stankuary state? I don’t think they would get many takers if they find out they will be drinking toilet water, need a baboon pox vax and probably a polio shot to boot.

Chicken Little August 12, 2022 - 9:35 AM

What would be the point? We already have plenty of our own.

Bobfished August 12, 2022 - 9:50 AM

The New York State Department of Health and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said poliovirus had been detected in wastewater samples in New York City.

Got polio shots as a kid but we have stopped that practice so it would be the youth at risk…

First off reclaimed water is disgusting. Next Newsom talks a good game but as soon as the environmentalist throw up an objection he will throw up his hands instead of fight. He just gave up on a desal plant in S California. The company spent millions trying to get it done. It would have been the biggest in California.

Chicken Little August 12, 2022 - 1:47 PM

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but the earth’s ecosystem only contains a finite amount of water. It’s all been “reclaimed” at one time or another.

Ricardoh August 12, 2022 - 4:32 PM

Chicken Little Huh? Yes it goes up in the air and comes down as rain or snow. Pee water is not put through a man made processor. You want to drink it go ahead.

Chicken Little August 12, 2022 - 6:25 PM

I didn’t say it went through a man-made process, just that it’s all the same water that gets used over and over again. And if you think people and animals don’t pee, poop, and do who-knows-what-else in reservoirs, you’re delusional. Luckily, that water goes through a man-made purification process before it gets to your tap.

Regular Guy August 12, 2022 - 6:34 PM

“The time to get these damn projects is ridiculous; It’s absurd. It’s reasonably comedic,” Newsom said. “In so many ways the world we invented from an environmental perspective is now getting in the way of moving these projects forward.”

Newsom is finally admitting the cause of many of California’s woes; overzealous environmentalists. In addition to blocking more reservoirs, they also prevented beneficial logging of our forests.

Whoe Jim August 12, 2022 - 7:01 PM

How fitting that Newsom is drinking poo water since most of his voters have been pooing on our California sidewalks for quite some time…

Ricardoh August 13, 2022 - 12:27 PM

Glen they are powered by fossil fuel energized electrical generators as the should be until we wake up and go nuclear.
