Always make sure to wear your DOT approved helmet properly.

TraumaRX:
My husband wore a DOT approved full-face helmet, and nearly died of a TBI. Coup contrecoup comes to mind.

Airsupply January 6, 2020 - 2:01 AM - 2:01 AM

Yea sure you ever seen the DOT approved brain buckets Harley riders like to wear? DOT approved my butt, those helmets are a joke and whoever approved them is a moron..

Robert January 6, 2020 - 8:22 AM - 8:22 AM

You definitely have a much better chance with a real helmet, not like those plastic shells a lot of riders are wearing. People that wear those illegal helmets are just being foolish! Granted even a good helmet won’t always save your life, but your chances are way higher then if you don’t wear a good helmet!

Robert January 6, 2020 - 8:25 AM - 8:25 AM

To: Air Supply

Those shells that a lot a Harley riders wear are not approved by any government agency. People are just buying DOT stickers to put on them and they’re not even official DOT stickers. Just something that someone printed up! You might as well not even wear a helmet if you’re at all. They are just being foolish!

The Fractionator January 6, 2020 - 8:49 AM - 8:49 AM

You can buy a DOT sticker at any bike show or on the net and slap it on a helmet. Don’t make it safe and adds almost no protection for the brain bucket. Protect yourself and wear a real DOT approved bucket!

Anonymom January 6, 2020 - 8:59 AM - 8:59 AM

This hardly seems relevant considering someone is dead but as long as everyone feels they need to state their opinion not actually knowing how the rider died I guess we’re good huh?

Concerned citizen January 6, 2020 - 5:48 PM - 5:48 PM

DOT is virtually a useless rating, the standards are very low and any company can slap a DOT sticker on a helmet without official testing. Snell and ECE approvals are what you want, especially if your life is dependent on it.

Sergii Kovalchuk January 7, 2020 - 1:14 PM - 1:14 PM

DOT is self-certified standard, i.e. not certified at all for most of the cheaper helmets. Always wear DOT and SNELL certified helmet from reputable brand

DANIEL DONG January 7, 2020 - 3:56 PM - 3:56 PM

DOT is the minimum…

Willowpass January 6, 2020 - 12:02 AM - 12:02 AM

Mikey January 6, 2020 - 3:51 AM - 3:51 AM

I came upon this accident about 5 mins after it happened and had to turn around and go back the other way… So sad… RIP

Good for the bystanders trying to save him.

I’ve ridden Marsh Creek Road on my bike so many times. It’s a great ride but dangerous due to the amount of curves, rocks and animals and the cagers who drift into your lane. Ride that road during commute hours and it seems like your on I-80 with all the folks from East County. Some bikers also like to use it as a road course and take it way to fast. If you ride Marsh Creek slow down, take it easy and keep er up and enjoy the ride. Don’t know why the Biker went down but my heart and prayers go out to him and his family, R.I.P.!

Badmedia January 6, 2020 - 9:03 AM - 9:03 AM

Thank you. And thank you to anyone that tried to save my brother.

WhoDat Gurl January 6, 2020 - 12:46 PM - 12:46 PM

Badmedia,

I’m very sorry for your loss. My brother also rides Harleys and has taken a few bad falls, none of which were his fault. My prayers go out to you and your family. RIP.

ChuckStir January 6, 2020 - 7:54 AM - 7:54 AM

Not every motorcycle fatality is a head injury, though a DOT approved helmet is a must there are other things to consider. And not all DOT approved helmets equal. Your best bet is to go with a well known and trusted brand like professional motorcycle racers use, Bell, Shoei or Arai to name a few.

ilovepopcorn January 6, 2020 - 10:02 AM - 10:02 AM

Why are we quibbling over the DOT approval? I am sure his family would not approve of your dialogue. This is very sad. My heart go’s out to his loved ones and family. RIP sir.

Badmedia January 6, 2020 - 11:15 AM - 11:15 AM

Thank you for your thoughtful response to his devastated family. His name was Timothy Baker, and he was an absolutely loving, fabulous man !

Darrell January 6, 2020 - 11:17 AM - 11:17 AM

This is why it’s wise to stay away from these forums after a family tragedy… as I’m sure the majority do.

Badmedia January 6, 2020 - 11:50 AM - 11:50 AM

Darrell, may you never find yourself so lost that you seek comfort from even strangers.

Kentucky Derby January 6, 2020 - 12:29 PM - 12:29 PM

I agree that kind words and prayers are more supportive, but the comments sections of a news site isn’t the place to seek solace. That’s what family, friends and a place of worship are for.

Mike & Marla Baker January 6, 2020 - 10:49 AM - 10:49 AM

Our son was the victim in this accident and we are so grateful to all the bystanders who tried to help.

Thank you all.

Mr. & Mrs. Baker
I am very sorry for your loss, and the for the “chatter” here from folks that don’t ride, or have any idea on what happened to cause the crash. I ride through the canyon nearly every weekend. It is a great road for a bike, and yesterday was very beautiful in the canyon with all the new grass and the hills are beautiful.
May you soon find peace of heart, it is always hard to hear of a fellow motorcycle enthusiast’s passing.

WhoDat Gurl January 6, 2020 - 12:49 PM - 12:49 PM

The Baker’s,

I’m so very very sorry for the tragic loss of your son. Motorcycles are fun, until something like this happens. My brother and I used to ride together for hours; it’s a bonding experience I will never forget.

May you find comfort remembering the memories and love you all share. May he RIP.

Again, so very sorry for your loss.

Mikey January 6, 2020 - 1:38 PM - 1:38 PM

Mike & Marla, I’m so sorry you lost your son. Me and my neighbor were there when it happened. I made the 911 call and my neighbor, who is an ER tech, is the one who attempted CPR but sadly there was nothing that could be done. Tim passed quickly and didn’t suffer. I’m sorry there wasn’t more that we could do. My heart goes out to you. <3

FPN January 6, 2020 - 11:28 AM - 11:28 AM

Mike and Marla, so very sorry for your loss. Your in my thoughts and prayers. May you find comfort in kind words, family and friends. Timothy rest in peace.

Chicken Little January 6, 2020 - 12:41 PM - 12:41 PM

To the Baker family,
I’m very sorry for your loss, and thankful for the people who were there and did their best to save him. I can’t imagine your pain, but I hope you can find a way to heal.

Simonpure January 6, 2020 - 1:39 PM - 1:39 PM

My son purchased a bike a few years ago. I was a nervous wreck the whole time. So glad when he sold it. Rest well Timothy.

Robwrt January 6, 2020 - 1:44 PM - 1:44 PM

My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of this man! I’m a rider too and I know the hazards out there!

Whitebike Mike January 6, 2020 - 1:46 PM - 1:46 PM

Tim did wear a “real” helmet. I have to say that the way everyone immediately goes to their own political bs on this forum is very distasteful and a sad representation for all of us.
Tim had a huge personality and will be sorely missed by those lucky enough to have known him.
To Tims immediate family, I am very sorry for your loss.
Peace be with you

Guy Wo Was There January 6, 2020 - 2:47 PM - 2:47 PM

I don’t want to talk about it here but I was at the scene and feel quite confident that had Tim made a better choice with regard to head protection, he would still be alive today.

badmedia January 8, 2020 - 8:56 AM - 8:56 AM

Thank you for your truthful, thoughtful post. You knew Tim well,

CB January 6, 2020 - 2:57 PM - 2:57 PM

Oh Marla,
SO SORRY to hear this is your son. I can’t imagine your pain, I wish there were words that could. Prayers for you and Kelli and Karen.
