Pier 1 Imports is expected to close 450 of its stores nationwide, including the one on Mt. Diablo Blvd. in Walnut Creek, according to a post from BusinessInsider.

The Concord store on Diamond Blvd. will remain open, as will the stores in Antioch and Dublin.

Fun Fact: Did you know, Pier 1 Imports used to be called Cost Plus Imports?

Cost Plus Imports was the original name of Pier 1 Imports. It was based in San Mateo. Changed its name when it moved headquarters to Fort Worth.

My recollection is that Pier One and Cost Plus were in two separate buildings in the Fisherman’s Wharf area of San Francisco. Perhaps one of them on Mason or Taylor? Why would that be, Pony, if they were the same company? I could certainly be mistaken but that is my recollection.

This article explains how both Pier 1 and World Market had the name Cost Plus at the same time in the 60’s. “They changed the name to Pier 1 Imports to reflect the store’s import emphasis and embarked on a mission to expand the concept nationally. The original Cost Plus outlet remained under separate ownership and eventually grew into the nationwide Cost Plus chain of the early 21st century, one of Pier 1’s competitors.” Also interesting that Pier 1 was started by the the same Tandy behind Radio Shack! https://www.encyclopedia.com/social-sciences-and-law/economics-business-and-labor/businesses-and-occupations/pier-1-imports-inc
