Proposed Legislation Would Expand Rosie The Riveter Park In Contra Costa County

Legislation that would expand the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond has been introduced in the House of Representatives and the U.S. Congress.

Rep. Mark DeSaulnier, D-Walnut Creek, introduced the Rosie the Riveter National Historic Site Expansion Act (HR 7585), which would add Nystrom Elementary School to the park.

“Richmond and West Contra Costa played a pivotal role in our nation’s efforts in World War II. We owe it to the families who helped write that history to share their stories. By expanding this culturally significant site, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the Nystrom School, which was built to teach the children of shipyard workers,” DeSaulnier said.

Nystrom Elementary was part of a planned development that includes the historic Maritime Child Development Center, already preserved as part of the park, and the Nystrom Housing Area, which the city of Richmond has slated for future preservation and redevelopment.

I support that.

wasn’t Nystrom School torn down and rebuilt ?

Better be careful, the far left will want to destroy it. Rosie was a White woman named Naomi Parker Fraley. AOC and the squad will have a huge problem with that, and of course, Nancy Pelosi will go right along with whatever AOC says.

Something must have happened to DeSaulnier when he was sick to be sponsoring something for Rosie the Riveter. Let’s wait and see but I don’t believe it.

In a way this is in character for him. The actual Nystrom school according to one website is a disaster, with 93% getting free/discounted lunch, very racially unbalanced, and a performance that puts it in the lowest 5% of elementary schools in California. So if I understand this correctly, instead of doing something of substance to help this failing school, he is just engaging in a symbolic feel-good act.

I like the idea but I don’t think the state can afford it. Does this mean yet another tax?

Oh, please July 19, 2020 - 9:13 AM - 9:13 AM

Everything means another tax. It is all a backdoor way for these people in power to make money through a back door.

And here we go. Rosie the Riviter will be cancelled soon.
Good bye to the Greatest Generation. Thank you for the dedication and sacrifice you and your families made for this great country. (No matter the color of your skin) You gave me and so many a very good life. I am appreciative.
I’m sorry for what we have become and I’m sorry for the world I will leave for my children.

I don’t understand how people vote for Mark. He is truly useless. He needs a pink slip

The Wizard July 19, 2020 - 9:31 AM - 9:31 AM

He caused enough harm and needs to retire and be with his family.

Rosebud July 18, 2020 - 8:43 PM - 8:43 PM

I think Mark DeSaulnier met “Rosa Parks” of the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955.

IIRC she quit the job after several weeks because she was worried it would injure her hands. She married a dentist then and her contribution to the war was limited to keeping her husband happy.
