Contra Costa County Passes Resolution Declaring A Climate Emergency

by CLAYCORD.com

The Board of Supervisors this week unanimously passed a resolution that endorses the Declaration of a Climate Emergency in Contra Costa County.

The resolution “demands accelerated actions on the climate crisis and calls on local and regional partners to join together to address climate change.”

The resolution states: ”WHEREAS, the COVID-19 crisis could mark a turning point in progress on climate change and there will be a need for a resilient recovery after the pandemic, and Contra Costa County’s capacity to act depends largely on our ability to work together in solidarity to build the bridge between fighting COVID-19, biodiversity loss, and climate change.”

“It is our hope and vision that Contra Costa County dedicates itself to making important and significant progress to address climate change now and in the years ahead,” said Board Chair, Supervisor Candace Andersen. “We must continue our work to be good stewards of the environment for future generations.”

The Declaration of a Climate Emergency resolves to achieve a range of initiatives, including:

  • Contra Costa County establishes an interdepartmental task force to focus on urgent implementation of the Climate Action Plan.
  • The County considers its recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and can incorporate the County’s climate goals.
  • The County seeks input from the community (with a special focus on highly impacted Environmental Justice communities), workers, and business/industry to help the County plan for a “Just Transition” away from a fossil-fuel dependent economy.
  • The County will prioritize the implementation of its Climate Action Plan in order to achieve greenhouse gas reductions.
  • The County considers impacts on residents, especially the young, the elderly, low-income or communities of color, and other vulnerable populations.

The Climate Emergency resolution further calls for “a unified Countywide voice around climate change and strengthen the call for state and federal actions and funds to address the economic, social, public health, and national security threats posed by the climate crisis.”

There is no such thing as global warming. Climate change has always existed. There has been a drastic reduction in traffick. Arsonists are the reason for the smoke. This is a hoax.

Regarding the climate plan, I have little trust in the established leadership at county level or at city level to do much of anything, without intense pressure for the public. Certainly Concord city council has shown no interest in developing a climate resilience strategy, and climate change is never a topic during council meetings.

Regarding schools, there are some private schools that have reopened. The county also has a process to allow public schools to reopen. If the Covid numbers continue to decline like they have been, school districts could allow students back sometime this current semester. However, school districts won’t be required to reopen if they don’t want to, and some schools might only partially reopen. Part of the criteria will be for schools to break classes in half. Instead of 30 students per teacher on average, there will be 15 students on average per teacher. Districts will need to hire new teachers and new substitute teachers.

Cool, so civic administrators feel they have time and money to allocate to a plan that can’t yet prove will actually fix the identified problem. Rather than putting those resources into getting our kids in school. Makes sense.

The plan is to get everyone out of their cars and into the bus. It is why they aren’t fixing the roads, and have the purchase of additional buses their top priority. It is why they presented the voters with the extensive tax increase in March from the Transportation Authority. They have recycled it and are putting in on the ballot again in November. The only way to defeat this is to vote “No” on any tax measures presented in November.

Sam September 26, 2020 - 7:51 PM - 7:51 PM

Plausible, however I think when we dismiss them as illogical, we remove the sick and twisted plan that we all know about to do exactly what they are doing. The Strong Cities Network is part of the UN AGENDA 2021 and AGENDA 2030. If you think this is bad going into 2021 just wait till the 2030 AGENDA kicks in. If people really want to take our locals to task we would demand immediate withdrawal from the STRONG CITIES NETWORK and any other treasonous agreements made by the city, state and county.

Captain Bebops September 27, 2020 - 1:49 PM - 1:49 PM

This is Agenda 2030. Agenda 21 was non-binding but they were disappointed that cities didn’t adopt their recommendations so they created Agenda 2030. There is a YouTube video interviewing one of the 2030 authors (from Denmark I think) explaining this.

Yoyohop September 26, 2020 - 4:51 PM - 4:51 PM

These emergency declarations have become the new tactic to circumvent the democratic process.

MoJo September 26, 2020 - 4:53 PM - 4:53 PM

Excellent- I looked up and learned the meaning of two new terms from these posts- Bantha fodder and Environmental Justice Community. If these supervisors want to start somewhere, I would suggest they ban or limit the use of gas powered blowers. I had 3 different clowns blowing exhaust and ash into the air on my street at 8am this morning. They were successful in re coating my vehicles and yard with a nice layer of ashes after cleaning up yesterday. Almost came unhinged and went into whirling dervish mode on them but decided to save it for another day.

Ash September 26, 2020 - 5:02 PM - 5:02 PM

don’t these idiots have anything better to do?

wait,democrats/progressives… answered my own question

Worried September 26, 2020 - 5:11 PM - 5:11 PM

I don’t believe you have the power to do such a thing if you were going to declare anything you should declare a progressive liberal emergency that’s what we need to get rid of. These people are well on their way to destroying this county and state I don’t believe for a minute it has anything to do with the climate it’s all about control of the people they’re gearing up for a biden win. They’re going to be very upset when he loses in a historic way.

chuckie the troll September 26, 2020 - 5:39 PM - 5:39 PM

Emergency resolutions and orders are what politicians do when they don’t want to have public debate about their actions. We are already subject to rolling blackouts and flex alerts because the state has forced public utilities to abandon perfectly good power plants using clean burning natural gas and nuclear, which emits no CO2 at all. The only thing this resolution will generate is more emergencies!

Check out Ice Age Farmer on YT, he has been spot on regarding what’s coming.

But now these UNELECTED COWARDS can hide with their addresses being hidden, eventually they’re going to be given body guards.

bonnie wixson September 26, 2020 - 6:30 PM - 6:30 PM

They can’t consistently provide electricity to our homes yet we’re going to eliminate fossil fuels? There are a lot of emergent problems in the county but climate isn’t one of them. And what the hell does climate change have to do with Covid 19 which they are doing an incredibly poor job of handling.

The Wizzard September 26, 2020 - 6:32 PM - 6:32 PM

Another waste of money. Remember this on election day. Put the money in the schools. And teach our kids to be proud of themselves and country.

Gittyup September 26, 2020 - 6:34 PM - 6:34 PM

They’ll have to start with a diplomatic trip to China to request China limit their manufacturing which is causing pollution to drift across the Pacific into California. Of course, we know the Chinese will be more than willing to cooperate because they have always had our best interests at heart. My question is, however, are they using this “emergency” to build more and more densely located housing which they feel will help with climate change? Because we all know that’s how it works.

Michael A Cordero September 26, 2020 - 6:36 PM - 6:36 PM

What does Covid-19 have to do with our weather? NOTHING. Never waste an opportunity. Sounds like a Demo plan. Spend your time and our $$$$ on getting our kids back in school. We can shop side by side but our kids can’t do the same things in order to get back in class. Two hours a day on the computer is NOT a good education. We need to never vote for an incumbent in our next city election. Vote them all out and start all over. We need new blood, New leadership!! I VOTE!

CJRN September 26, 2020 - 11:23 PM - 11:23 PM

Currently my 2 year old has been going to preschool 3 hours a day, 5 days a week for the past 3 months. Not one case of COVID at the school of 2, 3, 4 year olds. However, my 8 year old cannot attend school due to COVID. If you can get 2 year olds to social distance, wash their hands and avoid this virus, why can’t our schools do the same? My 2 year old is getting a better education!

badmedia September 27, 2020 - 2:06 PM - 2:06 PM

Thank you for publicly stating that fake history is being taught in our Public schools. This is a travesty that has gone on for far too long. Not teaching our high school graduates Civics, but requiring Kindergarten age children to learn, “I Have Two Daddies”. Vote Democrats out if you can’t leave Cali.

Justifiable languor September 28, 2020 - 8:31 AM - 8:31 AM

I second that thank you. We need to hear more first person accounts from teachers. We know people in various CA MT areas who give us news regarding their children’s education. So least one in every school was fearful of losing job. They thought escape to rural area would eliminate fake education. Not so. And yes. The children were indoctrinated about I have two mommies. We will be paying for transgender mutilation soon. Leave those kids aLONE!

Wow September 26, 2020 - 6:55 PM - 6:55 PM

Ban GAS powered leaf blowers that spew GAS in your neighborhoods and downtown everyday, multiple times a day.. Only second grade level mentality cannot see this as a pollution problem and I’ won’;t even go into the noise they create.
Other cities are smarter than ours AND BANNED THEM LONG AGO.
Newsom should be banning them for all of California instead of talking about electric cars years from now., Using his head for something other than a gel magnet,.

BTW, we’re in a solar minimum. When these occur there is generally global cooling not global warming. You’ll probably still get some occasional little heat waves but over all the planet will be cooling. Remember the longer than usual cooler temps we had starting last fall and way into spring? It happened in other countries too. Longer cold spells mean long flu and cold seasons. I think the Sups are stuck in global warming mode.

If you think I’m making this up go check the NASA site. They’ve been studying these since 1989. The big one known in history was in the mid 1600s and lasted about 50 years.

badmedia September 27, 2020 - 2:20 PM - 2:20 PM

One of the best comments above is questioning if this is from The Onion. This Declaration is such a mishmash potato salad mess it looks like satire. Its got global warming, Covid-19, biodiversity, the economy and social justice all thrown into a mixing bowl. What a mess and the overuse of political poster words like vision, solidarity, urgent, impact and so on make me wonder if some lower level bureaucrat author purposely wrote up “The Onion” version for fun that these dolts could not even recognize as satire as they voted on it.

Fred P. September 28, 2020 - 8:27 AM - 8:27 AM

It’s all because they’re unable and unwilling to tackle the more immediate problems facing us. It’s easier to do something that might or might not happen in 20-30 years, as everyone will have forgotten about it.
