Contra Costa Health Officials Issue Thanksgiving Holiday Guidelines

The following information is from the Contra Costa Health Dept.:

“With cases rising around the country, and beginning to increase a bit here in Contra Costa County as well, we all must come together and keep up our efforts to reduce transmission,” said Dr. Chris Farnitano, Contra Costa County Health Officer. “When people who live in different houses or apartments are together at the same time in the same space, risk of COVID-19 spreading goes up, even when the people are relatives or friends. Please celebrate safely this year and protect yourself and your family by including masks, keeping a distance, and staying outdoors.”

The fact sheet (click on the image above) advises the public that if you gather in person, keep it small, short, stable, safe. Also, the fact sheet recommends that to slow the spread of COVID-19, it is best to avoid traveling long distances to celebrate the holidays. For those who are traveling, the fact sheet provides tips to help avoid catching COVID-19 or spreading it to fellow travelers.

Though California does not require travelers to quarantine upon arrival or return to the state, some national and state governments have requirements and restrictions for visitors from California, including mandatory quarantine and testing. Check what the rules and requirements are before you travel.

Celebrate without gathering

The safest way to celebrate this holiday season is virtually or with members of your household. Gathering with people outside your household – even extended family – increases the risk of getting and spreading COVID-19.

There are many ways to enjoy the holidays with loved ones without gathering:

  • Enjoy holiday traditions at home with your household
  • Decorate your home and/or yard
  • Share a virtual meal with family and friends
  • Host online parties and/or contests
  • Prepare meals using traditional recipes and deliver to family and neighbors
  • Attend holiday movie nights at drive-in venues
  • Visit holiday-themed outdoor art installations
  • Participate in drive-by events where everyone stays in their vehicles

OUTSIDE IS SAFER – Gather outside and follow safety guidelines. The risk of COVID-19 transmission is highest in indoor spaces without enough ventilation. That’s why gathering inside is not allowed, except as permitted under
the state’s health order. Outdoor spaces that are covered are okay, as long as 75% of the space is open to the outdoors. People may go inside to use restrooms, as long as restrooms are sanitized often and attendees only go one at a time.

SMALL – Limit gatherings to no more than 3 households. When people from different households are together at the same time in the same space, the risk of spreading COVID-19 goes up. That’s why gatherings of more than 3 different households are not allowed.

SHORT – Limit gatherings to no more than 2 hours. The longer people gather together, the higher the risk of COVID-19 spreading. That’s why gathering for longer than 2 hours is not allowed, under the state’s health order.

STABLE – Do not participate in multiple gatherings with many different households

Wouldn’t it be nice if those rapid home tests were available? Then all we’d have to do is test ourselves before going anywhere. Positive test – stay home. Negative test – no worries. This constant guessing is really getting on my nerves!

Justifiable languor November 10, 2020 - 6:51 AM - 6:51 AM

I feel the same way Chucklie’s wife. In some places they take your temperature. To the diehard mask wearers, stay home! Collect your direct deposits and have everything delivered. The more robust need to work and get on with life.

S November 9, 2020 - 2:27 PM - 2:27 PM

Another waste of my tax dollar !

Didn’t our dear, dear beloved governor already do this on our benevolent behalf?

Sam November 9, 2020 - 2:36 PM - 2:36 PM

Before the boot licking begins, I don’t follow mandates and I spit on guidelines. The Biden maskless celebration pretty much sums up what COVID was all about.

oldman November 9, 2020 - 2:39 PM - 2:39 PM

@Mike. So that makes them ok?

Eastbay Babe November 9, 2020 - 2:42 PM - 2:42 PM

The next stupid guideline will be is to get your Turkey tested for Covid-19 plus the idiots who thought of these “guidelines”.

Also gather as much people around the house, just state you and others are protesting against Thanksgiving that the Turkey head was removed for punishment, and your all ready to watch a burial that will be covered with gravy and Mash Potato.

sigh……God! liberals have turn my once beautiful state into a full fledged NUTHOUSE!

Original G November 9, 2020 - 2:49 PM - 2:49 PM

They frequently mention symptoms in these commandments but rarely do they list symptoms.

So typical, these health officials know symptomology and ASSume everyone else is equally well versed, which is not the case.
Would think they would repeatedly strive to reinforce knowledge of symptoms so people could make informed decisions as to going to or hosting gatherings.

ANTHONY NORTHRUP November 9, 2020 - 2:56 PM - 2:56 PM

Health Department

Thank you for your guidelines. They will not be followed by me or my kin.

2 hours for Thanksgiving … wow … yeah,
As for three households, so it does not matter if a family is 6 living in a house or 1, you make the count by household.
As for those living in apartments, how will they celebrate outside?

As for these guidelines, have you ever had an original thought or do you always copy Newsom’s words as your own?

Sancho Panza November 9, 2020 - 3:31 PM - 3:31 PM

@Anthony~I enjoyed reading your commentary! As for original thought from the Health Department, no sireee…tomorrow Dr. Farnitano will be declaring racism a public health crisis in Contra Costa County…I’m not joking take a look:

LimeRidge Larry November 9, 2020 - 3:01 PM - 3:01 PM

This set of “guidelines” are all a bunch of hogwash. Dr. Farnitano can stick it. We are having a large celebration and it will be indoors like it is every year.

Come and get me Dr. F. Are you going to throw me in jail for celebrating when you are letting actual criminals out of prison. What a farce.

Sam November 9, 2020 - 3:08 PM - 3:08 PM

No room for beta males in this world. I’d suggest you toughen up as well snowflake. Nothing to watch out for unless you get in my way.

BOB November 9, 2020 - 3:16 PM - 3:16 PM

It’s Thanksgiving, so stuff it.

Martinezmike November 9, 2020 - 3:46 PM - 3:46 PM

If we listened to turkeys, there woild be no Thanksgiving.

HappyPappy November 9, 2020 - 3:50 PM - 3:50 PM

Best response right there, Ash!
Great minds think alike. 😉

Strad November 9, 2020 - 3:54 PM - 3:54 PM

So they don’t have any real experience on what to do, they are throwing everything out there and see what sticks.

Cellophane November 9, 2020 - 3:58 PM - 3:58 PM

Guidelines this year, mandates next year.

WIth armed soldiers patrolling the streets looking into the window.

Noncompliance will not be an option.

Aveeno November 9, 2020 - 4:39 PM - 4:39 PM

Forgive my ignorance, I’m not really into politics. Do some people think Corona virus all together is not real? I’m just curious why there is so much controversy about mask wearing?

Anon November 9, 2020 - 5:05 PM - 5:05 PM

Aveeno,
“Covid” has eradicated the flu for all of 2020. What more needs to be said with a 99.9% recovery rate???
Not sure what “not being into politics” has to do with anything.
I’m not into TV.

Aveeno November 9, 2020 - 10:50 PM - 10:50 PM

@Anon
I ask with complete sincerity. Was not trying to offend anyone or ruffle feathers.. I’m not sure if it’s just media bias but it seems like Republicans don’t think it’s necessary to wear masks and democrats do.

Silva November 10, 2020 - 2:18 AM - 2:18 AM

Aveeno, Yes, there are some people who believe this novel Corona virus is all a complete hoax, and it was a conspiracy perpetrated by this, that, and/or the other entity. There are also people who think it’s real, but it isn’t any big deal at all, nothing to worry about, and only a very few people have severe symptoms or die. And there are many people who feel put upon by the restrictions, requirements, and advisories, because they interfere with their rights and freedoms. That’s putting it simply, I’ve heard a whole wide range of beliefs. I’m sorry you politely asked your honest question and got a snarky reply. Some folks are having quite a tough time being civil right now for some reason.

ZZ November 9, 2020 - 5:45 PM - 5:45 PM

Not even going to look at the ridiculous guidlines. It’s all BS.

Dr. H. S. Thompson November 9, 2020 - 5:58 PM - 5:58 PM

There is no controversy, the CDC and others have stated that unless you have an N95 or equivalent a clean and sterile cloth mask will only give YOU 10%-30% of protection which diminishes as you wear it.

I know this because I too am a doctor…of Journalism.

Plinko November 9, 2020 - 7:28 PM - 7:28 PM

I really hope you’re joking. I’d hate to see our youth learning from someone who is well-versed in run-on sentences and no knowledge of when to use a comma.

PESFG November 9, 2020 - 7:26 PM - 7:26 PM

“Share a virtual meal with family and friends”…well that is a delicious idea…not!
Where are the guidelines regarding physical contact, I am curious about the hanky panky part.

Ano November 9, 2020 - 10:26 PM - 10:26 PM

My sister and I just said the same thing. Lol

We definitely need a refresher course on how to have sex and keeping it in the family ax they previously told us.

Rosebud November 9, 2020 - 10:02 PM - 10:02 PM

Is it just me, but these covid19 guidlines for Thanksgiving seem FAR-FETCHED?

Chris November 10, 2020 - 12:13 AM - 12:13 AM

Can’t wait to see the tabloid photos of Nancy’s clan gathering at the mansion or Gavin’s place over in Marin County with a house full of family and guests. But you my little ones better not even think about having anyone outside your family home over for a chat or bite to eat. The Nazi is watching you.

Belairium November 10, 2020 - 7:21 AM - 7:21 AM

Have your gatherings just be smart about it. I don’t know about anyone else but I’d like my kids to return to school soon and that’s not happening if we have another spike.

Robert Ward November 10, 2020 - 8:30 AM - 8:30 AM

They shouldn’t even be able to attempt to control what and friends do for the Holidays. They are just power happy. They can stuff it just like I am going to do to my Turkey. HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tomato Girl November 10, 2020 - 12:54 PM - 12:54 PM

All BS! I’ll do what I want not what the socialist fear mongers tell me to do
